“A National Historic Site”

With a history that dates back over centuries, this stone structure truly deserves its place of honor in the National Historic Register. The English and the Dutch forces attacked El Morro or Castillo San Felipe del Morro repeatedly in its time. Located on the San Juan Bay, the six-story fort was originally constructed in 1540, although its exterior walls were not erected for another 200 years. Inside the walls is a veritable labyrinth of chambers, barracks, hallways and prison cells. The fort was given a complete makeover in 1992.

The first female submariner in Latin America Eliana Maria Krawczyk is one of the 44 hours crew members of the submarine “San Juan”, which has not been in contact since November 15th.

During the last communication session, the submarine commander reported that there were problems on board caused by a short circuit. Since then, the boat’s whereabouts have remained unknown.

Krawczyk is the only woman on board the submarine.

Hope for the rescue of the crew was significantly shaken after the Argentine Navy announced that on the day of the disappearance of the boat in the area where it was located, an event resembling an underwater explosion was recorded.

  • Russia joined the search for the missing Argentine submarine
  • The San Juan submarine: an explosion was heard in the area of the disappearance

side of the submarine.

She grew up in the small village of Obera in northeastern Argentina. She saw the ocean for the first time only at the age of 21.

None of her family served in the Navy.

In 2004 she experienced two personal tragedies. First, her brother died in a car accident, and shortly after that, her mother died.

life and enlisted in the Navy after seeing a recruitment ad on the Internet.

In 2009, after graduating from the Naval Academy in Buenos Aires, she was trained to serve on a submarine. She’s been on the San Juan since last year.

In January, the Argentine Ministry of Defense posted a video on Facebook in which Krawczyk talked about her service. She said she wanted to be a submarine commander someday.

“If you think that you are under water, laying a route and at the same time you are the only woman, then this is a strange feeling, but at the same time it is exciting and interesting,” she said. “Any woman is capable of this, it costs her only this want.”

She served as captain of the submarine. In an interview with the media, her father Eduardo said that his daughter was extremely happy to serve on the submarine.

Her parents jokingly called her “queen of the seas” and said that she was born to become a submariner and showed a real passion for this profession.

One of her brothers – Roberto – said in an interview with a local radio station that before the San Juan sailed, Krawczyk was worried about the submarine.

“She told me there was some problem on the sub,” he said.

Submarine commander Pedro Martín Fernández promised his mother that this would be his last voyage.

And if none of Eliana’s family was connected with the sea, then one of the senior officers on the submarine – Jorge Ignacio Bergallo – knew firsthand about sea voyages since childhood, since his father was a captain. In the past, Jorge Sr. operated the very boat on which his son is now on board.

The current commander of the submarine is Pedro Martín Fernández. According to Argentine media, he promised his mother that this would be his last trip to the sea.

Six squads are searching for the missing submarine in San Jorge Bay (about 430 km from the coast), authorities said.

Search conditions are complicated by severe weather conditions and waves up to 10 m high, as well as the fact that the sea depth in the area varies from 200 to 2000 m.

Specialists from other countries are also involved in the search operation, including British representatives. Relations between the two countries were damaged after the Falklands War in 1982.

The last contact with the missing submarine occurred at 7:30 am on November 15, when the ship’s commander reported a problem with the battery system.
