Maniacs and Sociopaths: 7 Unsettling and Dark Characters in David Fincher’s Films There are many ways to adequately congratulate the hero of the day, one of them is to turn to the outstanding characters of the films. We recall seven gloomy movie characters from the full-length projects of the master of mysterious and gloomy stories.

18+

Still from the film Fight Club, dir. David Fincher
nine0002 David Fincher has established himself as a recognized master of detective stories and the creator of creepy thrillers about the nature of evil. “Fight Club”, “Seven”, “Zodiac”, “The Social Network”, “Gone Girl” became classics of the genre and made the American author one of the best directors of our time. He exploits gloomy themes and demonstrates the dark side of human nature. Among his characters were real and fictional serial killers, classic sociopaths, perverted maniacs and asocial informals. nine0009

John Doe

The main antagonist of the detective thriller Seven was, and still is, one of the greatest villains in film history. Obsessed with biblical motives, John Doe considered himself an instrument of God and did real evil under the guise of virtue. His ideology was based on the seven deadly sins, and sinners or people whom he considered as such became victims of sophisticated torture. He killed a fat man swollen with fat for gluttony, an actress obsessed with appearance for pride, and a famous lawyer for greed. For each victim, the maniac carefully planned the appropriate punishment and sincerely believed in the correctness of the case. After the fifth murder, he turned himself in to the police, but only to complete his masterpiece. He controlled the situation to the last, even when he was in handcuffs. John Doe was convinced that with his performance he would leave a mark on history and inspire an army of followers. He considered envy, which made him a winner, his sin. In the end, the killer was able to complete what he started and won, and this is a rare event among movie villains. nine0009

David Fincher kept the intrigue of the maniac’s identity right up to the scene in the precinct. The first meeting of the detectives with the killer is shown in the general plan, so it is impossible to make out the face of the criminal. The director, as it were, hints that the maniac cannot only be caught, but also seen – this adds to the character of sinisterness. Fincher conceived John Doe as an inconspicuous man who looked like a postman. As a result, he managed to get Kevin Spacey for this role, who brilliantly coped with the task. The actor refused to participate in the promo for the film and even asked to remove his name from the opening credits so that the viewer would not know who the killer was until the very end. As compensation, Spacey’s name was placed first in the end credits. nine0009

Zodiac

Formally, Fincher shows the image of one of the most famous serial killers in American history through the prism of a sluggish investigation. As in the thriller “Seven”, the director pays attention not to the maniac and his deeds, but to the people who are looking for the killer. The film is based on real police reports and a book by crime writer Robert Graysmith, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. With the help of carefully recreated details of the investigation, Fincher paints a collective image of a psychopath who enjoys torturing people. Someone under the pseudonym Zodiac actually operated in Northern California at 1960–1970s. He guarded his victims in parking lots and on deserted beaches, brutally cracked down on them, and then sent letters to local newspapers with mocking puzzles and threats of more murders.

By the end credits, the identity of the maniac remains a mystery, because the real Zodiac has not been caught. In the crime scenes, the killer was played by three different actors, and the main suspect was played by a fourth. The portrait of the murderer is formed thanks to the letters and ciphers with which the maniac blackmailed the media for several years. Even without showing the face of the main antagonist, the director managed to create a chilling portrait of a serial killer that inspires fear and anxiety. nine0009

Martin Wanger

In Fincher’s film adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling detective novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, there are several maniacs at once. One of them is a pervert guardian who raped the main character, for which he later suffered punishment from her hand. Journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) and his hacker assistant Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) are looking for another. Together they search for a serial killer of women at the request of retired businessman Henrik Wanger (Christopher Plummer), who wants to know the secret of his niece’s disappearance. nine0009

Independently of each other, the partners figure out the killer, it turns out to be one of the members of the Vanger family clan. Martin Wanger (Stellan Skarsgard) killed immigrant girls right under the noses of relatives who either turned a blind eye to the crimes, or didn’t really notice anything. In the basement of the house, he equipped a whole torture room, where he satisfied his desires and mocked the victims. The maniac took over the passion for murder from his father, but, unlike his parent, he preferred to throw corpses into the sea, rather than scatter bodies like trophies. Martin criticized his father for negligence and after his death brought the “family business” to perfection. The violence against his own sister makes Martin really terrible – he also adopted this sick fantasy from his father. nine0009

Lisbeth Salander

Despite the fact that the girl with the dragon tattoo is a positive character, there is something dark and gloomy about her. She dyes her hair black, wears piercings and has several tattoos. She has a high level of intelligence and a photographic memory, and is also withdrawn and asocial. In Fincher’s film, hacker Lisbeth Salander works from home, barely makes eye contact, and wears a T-shirt that says Fuck You, You Fucking Fuck. A complex female image on the screen was embodied at that time by a little-known actress Rooney Mara, who was even nominated for an Oscar for this role. nine0009

The author of the Millennium trilogy describes Lisbeth Salander as a short and thin girl who, with all her vulnerability, can stand up for herself and attack offenders. In Fincher’s film adaptation, after getting revenge on her rapist guardian, Lisbeth has the villain write eloquent monthly reports about her supposedly becoming friendly and outgoing. It is not difficult to guess that these character traits are not observed in the behavior of the girl. Which, in general, is not surprising, given how difficult her life was. At a young age, Lisbeth ended up in a mental hospital because of an attempt to burn her father alive. She showed aggression and could not get along with four foster families, was arrested for drunkenness, drugs and fighting. Communication with people is given to a girl with great difficulty, and from the outside she may seem really crazy. Stieg Larsson does not deny that Salander can be perceived as an unusual sociopath, because her life was filled with traumas, which is why she looks at society differently and cannot adapt in society. nine0009

Tyler Durden

Do you know Tyler Durden? Of course, you know, this is one of the most famous characters in the history of cinema. It was invented by the American writer Chuck Palahniuk, and the audience associates it with Brad Pitt, who embodied the image of Tyler in Fincher’s film adaptation of Fight Club. The director explores the dark side of the personality of an ordinary office clerk, who slowly plunges into the abyss of madness. Fincher demonstrates the difference between the hero and his alter ego with maniacal attention to detail: the classic Narrator dress code versus Tyler’s red leather jacket and sunglasses, the perfect IKEA-furnished apartment versus a perpetually flooded suburban home. nine0009

Tyler Durden is the Narrator’s unconscious alter ego, which emerges from the Narrator’s insomnia and internal dissatisfaction with his life. He breaks into the quiet and measured reality of the hero in order to demonstrate all the artificiality of his environment and undermine his ideals. In fact, Tyler embodies all the secret desires of the Narrator and does what the hero would not have the courage to do. He spits in the face of the consumer society and proclaims self-destruction as his religion. He is neither a maniac nor a sociopath, but his nihilistic ideas can be attributed to antisocial behavior. Tyler founded a fight club, which later became a terrorist organization. But at its core, Fight Club is not a movie about fighting or masculinity, but a story about insanity and mental illness. After all, Tyler Durden does not really exist, he is only a figment of the diseased imagination of the protagonist. And the fact that Tyler isn’t even real makes this character really dark. nine0009

Mark Zuckerberg

It would seem that the founder of Facebook * does in the list of creepy and gloomy characters? He didn’t kill anyone or do anything terrible. On the contrary, he created a social network so that people communicate online and are always in touch with loved ones – well, why not a hero of our time? But working with code does not inspire viewers and filmmakers. Therefore, Fincher decided to show the worst side of Mark Zuckerberg and focus on the psychological portrait of a prodigy programmer. At the center of Fincher’s “The Social Network” are anti-social heroes obsessed with success and power. Fincher draws a portrait of the hero in his characteristic manner through the prism of litigation. nine0009

A genius, a sociopath and a complete moron – this is how Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg, appeared before the audience. Movie Mark is emotionally distant from people and incapable of becoming a part of society – very ironic, considering that he creates a social network for communication. He does not believe in friendship and does not know how to communicate with girls. After creating the site, the hero betrays his only friend for his own benefit, and throughout the film he is shown as a prudent and heartless manipulator. The real Mark Zuckerberg was dissatisfied with this interpretation and claims that the authors of the biopic have distorted the story. The artistic image of the hero is indeed far from reality, but this did not stop The Social Network from becoming the film of the year according to the Golden Globe and receiving an Oscar for best adapted screenplay. nine0009

*Meta Platforms Inc., which owns Facebook, is banned in the Russian Federation due to extremist activities.

Amy Dunn

Rosamund Pike’s Amy Dunn is one of the most powerful and memorable female characters not only in Fincher, but in all of modern cinema. The main character of Gone Girl is a natural psychopath who faked her death and framed her husband. It never occurred to anyone that a friendly blonde is capable of committing a number of dubious acts and manipulating public opinion. Amy deceived everyone, including the viewer, who sincerely believes for the first half of the film that the unlucky husband is to blame for everything. In order to convincingly disappear, Amy Dunn came up with the perfect story and laid out a clear plan of action, from befriending a pregnant neighbor to a meticulously staged crime scene. She even wanted to drown herself in the Gulf of Mexico, just to punish her husband for having an intimate relationship with a student. nine0009

Amy is a real virtuoso of revenge. She seems to have it all. A diary with a fake story is written and safely hidden where the cops will definitely find it. In the hospital card there is a note about an imaginary pregnancy. The barn is filled to the brim with pointless purchases, because her unsuspecting husband must have financial problems and some kind of motive for murder. After the disappearance of Amy, she became a national treasure, and her klutzy husband became an enemy of the people. And all this time, Dunn only pretended to be a cool girl: first – to get married and meet the standards of her parents, and then – to reliably play the role of a wife. A top notch liar and sociopath, she emerged victorious from the game even when things didn’t go according to plan. America’s Sweetheart gets away with a real-life murder, and her fake innocence makes her one of the most disturbing and creepy female characters in film history. nine0009

Ana de Armas biography

Ana de Armas is a talented Hollywood actress with Cuban roots, a star of Hispanic melodramas. Gained fame thanks to the series “Black Lagoon” and “Roman Spain. Legend”. Gained particular popularity after filming in the films “God’s Daughter”, “Guys with Trunks”, “Blade Runner”, “Knives Out”. In 2022, the premiere of the film “Blonde!” took place, in which Ana played Marilyn Monroe.

Childhood

Ana Celia de Armas Caso (full name of the actress) was born in the small Cuban town of Santa Cruz del Norte in April 1988.

Ana de Armas as a child

Recalling the past, the actress said that her childhood was very contact and fun. He and his friends never played video games or watched DVDs, but the days were filled with simple human interaction and interesting undertakings.

nine0076 I grew up in nature, on the beaches, on the streets, where I played with friends. I felt free. We freaked out outside and then went back home to have dinner and watch cartoons. I was allowed to watch them for 20 minutes a day. She constantly fell, all her knees were bruised. Such a normal childhood.

And today, when she comes to Cuba to visit her parents, she turns off the phone, does not go online and just enjoys communicating with loved ones, going to the beach and walking.

Ana de Armas’ parents are Ana Caso and Ramon de Armas. My father, who at one time studied philosophy at one of the universities of the USSR, changed many professions: he was a teacher, a bank manager and vice-mayor of the city. Mom worked in the personnel department of the Ministry of Education.

Love for the stage manifested itself in a girl from a young age. Already at 13, she realized that she wanted to be an actress. Parents fully supported their daughter and sent her to the National Theater School of Cuba, where Ana studied for four years.

Career

For the first time on the screens, Ana de Armas appeared quite early: the 18-year-old girl made her debut in the Spanish film Rose of France (2006). She played a cameo role, but the start was made. In the credits, she appeared under her full name – Ana Celia de Armas Caso.

Further, de Armas was noted for small but memorable images in the films Madrigal (2007) and Paradise Lost (2007). Having gained experience, the Cuban went to conquer Madrid. There, a young and bright actress successfully overcame the casting to participate in the filming of the mystical melodrama Black Lagoon (2007 – 2010), where she played Carolina Leal Solis.

Black Lagoon: Ana de Armas as Caroline Leal

The plot of the series will be well known to the audience of its domestic remake – “Closed School” with Pavel Priluchny. The action takes place on the territory of an elite Internet school, where the “golden youth” of Spain is educated. Terrible things are happening in the Black Lagoon, and for seven seasons of the series, students are trying to unravel the mystical tangle of secrets. The heroine of Ana de Armas, Carolina Leal, was one of the central characters of the plot. A proud, brave, curious girl and laid the foundation for a chain of tragic events.

nine0002 “Black Lagoon” became the favorite series of Spanish teenagers

At the end of the filming of the sixth season, Ana de Armas decided to go to America to relax and improve her English, so the writers had to beat her departure from the series.

The real fame for the actress was brought by the full-length project that followed in 2009 with the loud title “Sex, Parties and Lies”. The young actress starred with the main heartthrob of Spain, Mario Casas. Undoubtedly, this duet looked more than impressive. In 2010, the film was ranked as the highest grossing film in the country.

nine0002 Still from the movie Sex, Parties and Lies

In 2011, Ana played the lead role in the thriller Dead End. According to the plot, her heroine found herself in a terrible trap prepared for her by a serial killer.

The series “Roman Spain. Legend “(2010 – 2012). Ana starred in two seasons, but then, despite the popularity of the project and its heroine in Spanish-speaking countries, she decided to leave the project for filming in Hollywood.

It should be noted that before moving to Los Angeles, Ana de Armas did not know English, with the exception of some common phrases. And this fact surprises many of her colleagues, because her English is flawless, without an accent. After the move, she went to a full-time language school for four months and studied, studied, studied…

The first American project of the Cuban was the film “Stone Fists” (2015), where Ana starred with Robert De Niro. Another film with the participation of Ana de Armas, released during this period, is the thriller “Who’s There” with Keanu Reeves.
