Se enciende la Ciudad Encantada en Guaynabo

Guaynabo celebró anoche su encendido como antesala al Día de Acción de Gracias.

El alcalde Héctor O’Neill y su equipo de trabajo se trasladó al Tablado del Río, donde se llevó a cabo la ceremonia del tradicional encendido, un espectáculo de luces que marca el inicio de las actividades navideñas en el municipio y que culmina el 6 de enero con la fiesta de los Tres Reyes Magos dedicada a los niños.

“Ante la crisis económica, en Guaynabo hemos sido sumamente cautelosos en el gasto de fondos municipales para esta actividad. Sin perder la tradición del encendido de Ciudad Encantada, hemos organizado para el disfrute familiar, nuestra gran fiesta navideña en la cual trabajan 1,500 personas. En otras palabras, el Encendido de Ciudad Encantada genera empleos directos e indirectos en esta época navideña”, dijo O’Neill al invitar a los guaynabeños y visitantes a pasar un buen rato de espíritu navideño.

Previo al prendido de luces, se celebró una parada de personajes infantiles y navideños la cual recorrió el centro del pueblo hasta el Tablado del Río. El Encendido se celebra en Guaynabo desde el 1994, un año después de que O’Neill asumiera la administración municipal.

En la apertura de las actividades, el público recibió una vela y simultáneamente se encendieron miles de luces de colores. Entre los adornos que apreciarán los guaynabeños y visitantes, se encuentran: bombillas tipo candelabro, luz de soga, adornos electrónicos, figuras navideñas animadas y un gran árbol de Navidad.

El espectáculo musical de inauguración estuvo a cargo de Luis Enrique, La Rondalla de Humacao, el Coro de la Iglesia Metodista de Torrimar y el Ballet Municipal de Guaynabo.

Mientras, en el Tablado del Río (contiguo al estacionamiento Mario Quijote Morales) donde habrá espectáculo de música, quedará inaugurado el pueblito del encendido (“encendido town”), compuesto por cuatro casitas en miniatura totalmente remodeladas y decoradas con nacimientos representando los países: Perú, Alaska, China, Egipto, África y Puerto Rico. Las familias podrán disfrutar de la exhibición de colecciones de nacimientos, confeccionados por Luis Olivo y varios artista puertorriqueños.

En el “encendido town”, los niños y niñas se fotografiaron con Santa Claus y recibieron libros para colorear y golosinas.

Habrá machinas, quioscos de artesanía confeccionada por artesanos de Guaynabo; y para el expendido de comidas y bebidas. A continuación el programa artístico de Ciudad Encantada:

Guaynabo is known as “Capital del Deporte” (capital of the sport).
It is also know as Puerto Rico’s first settlement, Caparra was founded in the area in 1508 by
Juan Ponce de León.

Guaynabo derives its name from a Taino Indian term which means “lugar de aguas dulces”.

The Caparra Ruins Historical Museum & Park includes ruins of the ancient fort and settlement
founded by explorer Juan Ponce de Leon in 1508. The small Museum of the Conquest and Colonization
of Puerto Rico located near the ruins features historical documents, exhibits and artifacts. The

The Rafael Martinez Nadal Museum features furniture and memorabilia of Don Rafael who was the

The San Patricio Plaza shopping mall includes over 120 specialty stores, Big K-mart,

The Enchanted City is a wonderful rock park near Cuenca. In the middle of the forest there are huge blocks of stone. This miracle of nature was formed as a result of soil erosion due to the influence of water and winds.

The Enchanted City (Ciudad Encantada de Cuenca)

A unique reserve – the Enchanted City (Ciudad Encantada), is located half an hour north of Cuenca in a mountainous area near the town of Valdecabras.

This miracle of nature was formed as a result of soil erosion due to the influence of water and winds.

Extraordinary rock formations and caves are scattered over an area of 20 km². Looking at some of the stone figures, it is hard to believe that they were formed only under the influence of the forces of nature, and man did not take part in their creation.

Between the thickets of pines and junipers rises the Giant Mushroom – Tormo Alto, a series of large ships (los Barcos) floats, a Seal (La Foca), a Dog (El Perro), a Turtle (La Tortuga), Bears (Los Osos), an Elephant fight and Crocodile (La Lucha entre El Elefante y El Cocodrilo), lies the frozen Stone Sea (El Mar de Piedra).

In this amazing ancient landscape, you can see real architectural wonders: the Roman bridge (Puente Romano), the Monastery (El convento), the narrow street between the rocks (El Tobogán). The park even has a Main Square (Plaza Mayor) on which there are large stone mushrooms (Hongos). There are in the reserve the Face of a Man (La Cara del Hombre), Lovers from Teruel (Los amantes de Teruel).

You can see the entire exposition of the Ciudad Encantada Reserve in about an hour, moving along one of two specially laid excursion routes. Well, if there is nowhere to hurry, you can spend the whole day in the park.

The remaining stone colossi do not yet have names.

Origin of the park

The history of the karst formations of Ciudad Encantada dates back to the Cretaceous period. This territory of the Iberian Peninsula was in ancient times the seabed. Animal remains were deposited 90 million years, skeletons accumulated under the water column. At the end of the Cretaceous, there were movements of the earth’s crust. The seabed rose above the water, perennial calcium deposits became limestone rocks. The porous sedimentary rock gradually changed under the influence of flowing and freezing water, temperature changes and wind. The stone was washed out unevenly, and the rocks acquired various picturesque silhouettes. These landscapes in the eighties served as nature for the film by John Milius about Conan the Barbarian.

The action of the forces of nature on the Enchanted City continues even now. Unfortunately, in some areas, the vaults of the rocky caves collapsed from time to time, blocking the galleries and making them inaccessible to tourists.
