biography

Juan was born in Noez, a small town in Toledo. He was the first son of Alfonso Ruiz Rojas and Catalina de Luna Garcia. Juan had a sister Paula and three siblings from his mother Catalina’s first marriage to Antonio Herrais named Jeronimo, Emilio and Eusebia Herrais de Luna, born in Almagro, Ciudad Real in Spain.
nine0003

He spent his childhood and youth in his native city, helping his very modest parents. They were devoted to the making of castanets, a very common trade among Noez’s neighbors, who practiced it when he was unpaid in the fields. From an early age, he shows a good disposition towards art, aided by his brothers Jeronimo and Emilio, who work as painters and decorators in Madrid and later in Talavera de la Reina.

In 1880, at the age of 17, he joined his brothers Jeronimo and Emilio in Talavera. He spent five years of his life determined to realize his dream of becoming an artist, devoting his spare time to learning all the modalities of the craft and other techniques that his curiosity prompted him to master, such as scenographic painting, gilding altarpieces. and restoration of religious images.
nine0003

In 1885 his mother died in Noez and his brothers Emilio and Jeronimo in Talavera due to cholera. Death from this disease meant at that time complete isolation from society. Juan had to take care of his brothers until their last hour and then bury them with his own hands. At 22, he finds himself alone in Talavera, not knowing what fate to accept, suffering from the loss of his greatest ailments and being discriminated against for not being a son of the city in order to be able to work freely in his profession. He decided to stay, leaving the painting aside. He spent two years of hard work trying to solve the problems left behind by his brothers when they died.
nine0003

Two years later, in 1887, he married Norbert Perez Arroyo of Talavera. He died nine years later, leaving two daughters, Tomas and Luisa Ruiz de Luna Pérez, aged seven years and eighteen months respectively. In July 1898, he married in a second marriage to Francisco Arroyo Pinilla, his first wife’s cousin, by whom he had ten children: Juan, Francisca, Salvador, Rafael, Antonio, Maria, Manuela and three others who died below.

Professional career

Photographer

Around 1890, Juan’s anxiety manifested itself in a new way of working – photography, which he practiced for 36 years without giving up his profession as an artist. Together with their friend Juan José Perales, they set up Talavera’s first photographic office in Plaza de Aravaca, on the first floor of an old house.

Around 1896, through his suppliers of photographic equipment, he contacted the Lumiere brothers, who offered him the exclusive right to promote cinematography in Catalonia. The lack of sufficient economic resources forced him to give up.
nine0003

In 1902 he expanded his photographic repertoire. He edited the first collection of photographic postcards of Talavera de la Reina sold by Norberto Vasquez from 1898 to 1914. He also issued business cards, edited postcards with monuments, streets, squares, bridges of the Tagus River in several series. more than forty images created in collaboration with the press of the time, ABC, Castilla, El Castellano Gráfico, Toledo, etc. , photographs of ceramic workshops, their production process, exhibition hall, visits of personalities such as Infanta Isabel or the Queen of Romania, scenes from everyday life in Talavera de la Reina, the market, the opening of the iron bridge, etc., which constitute an exceptional historical document of the time.
nine0003

In 1905 he moved his photographic studio to Rue Mezones 7 (formerly Medellin) where he also sold paintings, moldings, etc. Later in 1912 he moved his business to Plaza del Pan (formerly Libertad ), where he founded his factory of artistic ceramics. He ceased his activity as a photographer in 1926.

His professionalism and great talent as a photographer, especially in terms of composition and lighting, as well as his extraordinary sensitivity, surpassing that of most of his colleagues, make him an important figure in the historical panorama of regional photography.
nine0003

Ruiz de Luna SL

In 1942, Juan Ruiz de Luna was 79 years old and his health deteriorated, which determined the transfer of the industry to his sons, resulting in the creation of Ruiz de Luna SL.

On May 3 this year, Ruiz de Luna completed his most cherished work, the Altar of Christ on the Sea, which he donated to the Collegiate Church of Talavera de la Reina, in fulfillment of a promise made when his sons Juan and Salvador returned. Safe and sound after a trip to America at 1934 year.

On June 23, during the restoration of the image of Christ, his health deteriorated and he had to undergo emergency surgery in Madrid. He returned to Talavera de la Reina just in time to witness the completion of the work on 26 July, and on 3 September he was solemnly blessed by the Archbishop of Toledo, Enrique Pla y Daniel, at 6 am at noon.

In April 1943, Juan turned 80, and Pilar Marin de Cazares, president of his brotherhood and with the sanction of the city council and Archpriest Talavera, commissioned the restoration of the image of Nuestra Señora del Prado. Due to ill health and the use of two weeks of the Passion when the image was not on public display, she was taken to her home for restoration.
nine0003

Juan Ruiz de Luna died in Talavera de la Reina on 25 September 1945 at the age of 82.

Ceramist Ruiz de Luna

In 1915, Ruiz de Luna was the sole owner of this industry. That same year, Ruiz de Luna founded El Bloque, an educational and entertainment company following concepts developed by the Free Teaching Institution, Crowsist Thought and the 98 Generation, and runs classes there. Free evening of artistic, line drawing, modeling and general knowledge. The teachers were Francisco Arroyo Santamaria, then his son Juanito Ruiz de Luna and teachers Vicente Reaño and Casimiro Muñoz.
nine0003

These companies came to compensate for the lack of public attention to education and culture. These approaches were supported by Ruiz de Luna through his friendship and connections with contemporary intellectuals such as Plato Paramo, Francisco Alcantara, Mariano Benlliure, Joaquín Sorolla and Miguel de Unamuno, whom he met through Francisco Alcantara. This society also had a notable political undertone of opposition to caciqueism, which it implemented through the bimonthly El Bloque survey, which appeared on May 1916 years under the leadership of Pedro Ximénez de Castro.

He cared not only for the cultural and technical training of his employees, but also cared for their moral education, respect and affection for their colleagues. He organized comfortable workshops where one could listen to classical music and the theater la zarzuela. He created awards in the application and instilled in them the traditional religious concept with the resumption of the festivities of Saints Just and Rufinus and the march of “La Cruz de los Alfareos” in the Good Friday procession. He founded the Clay Relief Society to meet the medical needs of potters during his lifetime and after his death, covering all necessary expenses.
nine0003

For the Santiago Altarpiece, dated 1917, they received an honorary diploma from the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid, section of the decorative arts, in 1920. One of his best works is in the Ruiz de Luna Museum in Talavera de la Reina.

In 1918 they decorated the façade of the old post office, now Jaime Vera Social Center, on San Francisco Street in Talavera de la Reina.

On January 24, 1919, he purchased land for a factory from the Marquis de Covarrubias. Since that date, it can be said that a real revival of this ceramics began, since already in a calm home environment, the work and new installations necessary for production were carried out, which significantly improved its functioning.
nine0003

According to Fernando González Moreno, the curriculum was based on three aspects: practical training, carried out in the workshop, aimed at mastering the technique in its entire production process, theoretical training with courses given in “El Blok” and the third artistic teaching, in where designers and moulders find inspiration in the museum’s collection of over 600 antiques, installed in a factory owned by Ruiz de Luna.

Among his Art Nouveau works are the ceramic panels of the “Colonia de la Prince” in Madrid (made around 1918) and decoration of the facade of the Julio Garcia Moya house, made in 1920. (Today) it is the “Centro Polivalente el Pilar” on Paseo de la Talavera de la Reina).

This is the beginning of the best period for the company. The excellence of his work was recognized at the most important exhibitions in Europe and America, where they received the highest awards, which were enough to spread his name and his work around the world.

Ruiz de Luna’s other entrepreneurial initiative was the San Francisco de Asis factory, set up to produce building materials through mechanical processes. Installation of continuous kilns and workshops equipped with modern machines for the production of tiles and other materials, which have been favorites in the market due to their meticulous workmanship. He also invested large sums of money in his establishment, creating many jobs.
nine0003

In 1922, he opened a boutique exhibition in Madrid at no. 3 Floridablanca Street, which would last until 1933.

In 1924, in gratitude for being appointed adopted son of his city, Noez donated a plinth tile to the city’s San Julian church. In the same year, they completed all the ceramic decorations and the monumental fountain, from the Prado gardens to Talavera de la Reina.

In 1925, when Ruiz de Luna received the Knight’s Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso XII, paid by popular subscription, he received by royal prerogative from Alfonso XII the union of the surnames Ruiz and Luna, which he passed on to his descendants. In the same year, he created the Spanish Fountain at the “Plaza de la Independencia” in the Rosedal Park in Rosario de Santa Fe, Argentina. The largest ceramic fountain in the world at the opening.
nine0003

In 1928 he completed the plinths of the “Casa de los Niños” for the López de Sagredo family in Noes Toledo.

On May 9, 1929, the Ibero-American Exhibition opened in Seville. They presented a six-meter altar (Renaissance style), a fountain of two dolphins in the building of Castilla la Nueva and a bench of the province of Toledo in Plaza de España (Seville). He received the Grand Prix and the Gold Medal.

1930-1934 High altar, plinths and pulpit of the parish church of San Andrés Apostol in Castillo de Bayhuela.
nine0003

1936 During the civil war, the factory suffers heavy setbacks due to the conflict. Its strategic location, close to the right bank of the Tagus, and the fact that troops were stationed in its structures, made it a constant target for the artillery of another camp [which one?] The workshops were hit and the old museum suffered. irretrievable loss of more than two hundred pieces.

With the end of the civil war, master Francisco Arroyo Santamaria left the Ruiz de Luna factory, of which he was artistic director. After a brief stay at Emilio Niveiro’s Alfar del Carmen in Talavera de la Reina, he spent two years with Pedro de la Cal Rubio in Puente del Arzobispo before settling his studio permanently in Madrid.
nine0003

Artist and decorator

In 1888 he completed his first important work as a decorative painter. He is restoring the altarpiece and images of the church of San Miguel Arcángel in the nearby village of Torrecilla de la Jara in Toledo. At that time, he painted and decorated for free the theater of the Union, which was founded by young people from Talavera, restoring the old monastery of La Trinidad. His goal was to express himself professionally. He made his debut in productions of Cadiz and Gran Vía, which were a resounding success. After the performance, Juan had to come out to greet the audience and receive applause and a gift of six chickens and a box of silverfish from Menezes.
nine0003

Early in 1889 he went to Molledo de Portolin, a village in the Igunha Valley in Santander. Cause, painting and decoration of the home of Indian Fidel Garcia Lomas, lawyer, canalechist politician and senator of Santander. He was very pleased with Juan’s work, especially the imitation oak woodwork. He proposed to open a large art workshop in Santander, which did not exist in the city.
