CUEVAS DE LOS GOLONDRINAS is a hidden gem. A bit tricky to find it, but well worth indeed. The beach is difficult to walk on. But the cave with the Swallows is incredible.

Swallow Pit (Spanish: Sótano de las Golondrinas ) is one of the largest pits in the world, out onto the surface of the earth.

It is so named because it is a natural refuge for many species of birds and an impressive crowd of black swifts and apodids dive here at dawn.

Opening

The Abyss has always been known to the Huastecs.

The first documented studies are dated . It was produced by T. R. Evans, Charles Borland and Randy Stearns.

Topography

Schematic section of the swallow hole.

The height of the abyss is 333 meters, from the lowest entry point to the bottom. From the highest entry point, it reaches 376 meters.

The mouth of the abyss, 40 to 60 meters wide, gradually widens, reaching 135 meters at the bottom.
nine0003

This karst abyss formed along a limestone fault, slowly eroded by water infiltration.

This is not a cenote as no layer of water occupies the bottom of its inlet mega funnel.

Fame
