From the bag guys to the ranger, never seen such complete coordination. I’ve read a few negative comments about slow play etc but the day I played was almost perfect. It was busy and the parking lot was full and the tee sheet was full but one of our group couldn’t make in time and the starter(I think his name was JD) was calm and just told me, no problem. I’ve never quite met a starter like this guy. He smiled a lot and the friendliest guy I’ve ever met but man he kept everything tight and made sure everyone understood pace of play.
When our 4th guy showed up we were 30 minutes late but somehow within a few minutes , he had us playing. He kept everything moving and we finished in slightly less than 4 hours. My playing sucked as usual but that wasn’t the staff’s fault. The cart guys to pro shop and the starter were like a well oiled machine in my opinion. I don’t know how he did it but the starter also acted as a ranger. As busy as they were, I still don’t know how he did it but I even saw him a couple time on the course rangering, although there didn’t seem to be any holdups. Oh yes and the courses are beautiful!!

They open the course from over-seeding 2 days ago, so cart path only. Which wasn’t a big challenge (most fairways aren’t that wide). Greens were a little tricky due to over seeding , but not too bad.

Course was closed for many months for improvements (pumps and irrigation) and while at it some course changes, sodding, bunker improvement.
All work well and conditions everywhere were nice. Reseeding was also done (tees, fairways). Greens ran on the speedy side, especially downhill. A bit bumpy and firm, but very playable and I don’t believe any seeding added as they weren’t emerald green and seemed on the dry side. Plenty of bunker sand with plugging possible.
Free range balls, friendly staff, restaurant closes early but pleasant when open. Look for discount prices as can be mid-pricy in winter. Second course (Canada) open soon, should play similar but greens there are different type grass so not sure how they will compare….enjoy them both!

I kept beating his best players.
In the autumn of 1995, things were going well for us. Very well. I got used to El Conquistador, Yuri was earning money, my mother was getting closer and closer to the moment of obtaining a visa, and I was winning.
And that meant that something was about to happen—something not good.
One afternoon, Seku invited my father to the trailer.
— I’m sorry, friend, but you can’t work here anymore.
Sekou fired his father, but for what?
Sekou explained that his father’s presence at El Conquistador interfered with the normal functioning of the school. After all, besides the fact that he was my father, Yuri had to work as an instructor, and other girls envied me. He spent more time with me and openly showed his interest. The girls complained to their parents, and the parents complained to Sek. At least that’s what Seku explained to my father.
He also put forward a second reason for dismissal, which, in my opinion, was closer to the truth. It was difficult for Sek to control me when Yuri was nearby. True, he used the word to train . The presence of my father constantly undermined the authority of Sekou himself. When Seku ran into me, I turned to Yuri.
And even if I had no desire to belittle his authority, Sekou said, it still happened. Even if I didn’t say anything, you could see it in my eyes. As long as Yuri was around, I belonged more to him than to Sek.
Looking at all this from the height of my experience today, I understand that everything then revolved around the issue of influence on me. I have already demonstrated my worth as a player. I have won tournaments. I climbed higher and higher in the rankings. It was clear to anyone who spent even a little time in children’s competitions that very soon I would turn pro.
And after that I will start earning money. Therefore, Sek needed to securely tie me to him right now, at this early stage, if he wanted to be a member of my team in the future and if he wanted to receive his percentage of the big prize money. For a man in his position, this meant squeezing himself between the player and his parent. Sekou said that if I wanted to stay at El Conquistador, then my father should look for a new job.
And since my father won’t be working at the school anymore, Sekou said that we would have to pay like everyone else. Every morning they will pick me up and bring me to El Conquistador, and in the evening they will return me home. The same was true for competitions. Once a month, Yuri will be presented with an invoice, the amount of which will be determined based on how long Sekou and his staff have worked with me. It didn’t fit in any way. Not knowing how much we would have to pay, we could not plan anything and did not know what to prepare for. And worst of all, Sekou still had Yuri’s passport and visa. He constantly found more and more reasons not to return these documents. And while he had them, we were trapped. Naturally, I cannot know what Sekou was thinking at the time, but I think he was trying to create an atmosphere of uncertainty around us in which we would have nothing to rely on. As if he was waiting for Yuri to finally ripen so that he could start harvesting.
In other words, Yuri had to look for work again.
And the sooner the better. He poked around before discussing the problem with our landlady, a Russian woman who rented out her living room and part of the kitchen to us. She was directly interested in the financial stability of her father – on the first day of each month, we paid her 250 US dollars. At the time, she was dating a man who was something of a construction worker, a big guy who owned a landscaping company. He drove around in a rattling white pickup truck, picking up and taking home his workers, the people who removed weeds, planted grass and cut it. In addition, they fertilized flowers in flowerbeds in country club parks. My father had to do this before. The man offered his father a place in his team. His father grabbed him. He needed money to buy me shoes and tennis rackets and to provide us with housing and food.
I had to start work without any delay. I think it was very difficult for my father at that time. Every day he got up at 4 a.m., dressed in the dark, cooked breakfast for me and left a note on the table – just a few words, like instructions for the day.
On the days when he had to leave even earlier, he would get up and cook rice for me and put it under his pillow to keep it warm—this rice I ate when I woke up. The other members of the team, like Yuri, were immigrants who barely spoke English. Only they were not from Russia, but from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala, so Spanish was their native language. In addition, they were much younger than Yuri. For ten years or so. They were in the best physical condition, and their knees and joints did not hurt. But they welcomed my father warmly and kindly, and even liked him, so that he waited for the morning when he would have to ride with them in the cool Florida morning air. He laughed at their broken English stories and told them his own. He learned to swear in Spanish and fell in love with this little group. Among them, he was the only mysterious Russian.
Most of their time they worked on the golf course at the big country club, a showy place. Arriving there, they diverged in different directions.
Yuri walked the paths and greens [In golf, the shortest grass area, right next to the hole.], strengthening the turf, replacing it where necessary, removing weeds and all that – I’m not a big expert in all this – and did all this before the way the sun came up. All of this had to be completed before the first players took to the field around 6:00 am. Then he continued to work the rest of the day, sometimes with other team members, sometimes alone. He returned home at 5 pm, just in time for me to cook dinner.
This period of our lives, which lasted for many months, was very strange. Dad left the house every morning before I woke up, came back every evening to feed me, and then lay down on a fold-out couch where he spent many hours reading tennis books and taking notes.
He always had back problems. It all started back in Russia, when he worked on these pipes. Sometimes he forgot about her for months or even years, and then, like a bolt from the blue, the pain returned. Working on a landscape team was probably not the best option for a man in his condition.
One day, very early in the morning, when he was working on the green at a country club, his spine popped out. Of course, it’s easy to write about it: his disc popped out. But I can’t understand how he really felt. He says that it was excruciating – he had never experienced such pain in his life. It felt like the lightning strikes were burning his back. It can be said that the pain knocked him to the ground. And all he could do was lie on his back, grimacing and cursing softly. And all around it was dark, and he was wet with dew and water from sprinklers that did not allow the grass to dry completely. He cannot say how long he lay there. Losing consciousness, then regaining consciousness. The sky gradually became brighter. Then he saw trees. Then the leaves on these trees. And then the sky turned blue and the heat began. Finally, one of the players found him – he came across a long figure lying across the green and groaning. The player drove up to his father on a golf cart. He tried to speak to Yuri and lift him up, but his father only mumbled something in Russian and could not move.
At first, the player decided that dad was drunk. Just look what’s on the fifteenth hole! Drunk Russian. Probably one of the oligarchs! But finally, he realized that Yuri was not drunk – he was just in a lot of pain and he was asking for help. The man called other people from Yuri’s team. They stood around him, trying to help.
Finally, they lifted him off the ground, put him in a golf cart and brought him to the clubhouse, where he continued to moan, lying on his back.
One of his colleagues called the boss. He told him that Yuri was in a very bad condition and he needed to go to the hospital. The man wanted to call an ambulance, but the boss said “no” – an ambulance is expensive. He said that he would come and take Yuri to the hospital. As a result, he appeared only at the end of the day. Yuri lay in that back room moaning for hours.
He was discharged from the hospital after only a few hours. There, he was given a vial of painkillers, recommended recovery exercises, and told to lie down as much as possible.
I found out about all this later, when Yuri called from the hospital. It must have been around 7 pm. One of the workers later told me that all this time Yuri had been repeating only: Masha, Masha, I have to go home to cook food for Masha.
Father spent two weeks in bed. His condition was terrible. We hid all this from mom. When she called, we pretended everything was fine, fine, fine. In the meantime, I had to take care of him with all my might. I bought food, cooked food, fed him. I cooked breakfast before leaving for El Conquistador in the morning, and returned home immediately after the evening game. I thought he needed a pool. He couldn’t find a better place to train, stretch and recover. And I began to walk down the street, knocking on the doors of houses and asking those who spoke to me if they had a pool and if we could use it. The strategy is, frankly, crazy, but in the end, I managed to find a nice old lady who agreed to let us into her pool several times a week. It was then that Yuri finally began to recover.
