Antonio Cabn Vale – El Topo

Cantautor y Poeta

Fecha de nacimiento: 22 de noviembre de 1942
Lugar: Moca, Puerto Rico

Synopsis

Isabelle and Diego are two strangers who must leave their past to escape their enemies. Diego left the family after the death of his father, and his mother remarried. As a protest and punishment for what he sees as a betrayal in memory of his father, Diego enters the underworld and sells fuel to Sonoran’s most powerful drug dealer, Gavino Gaone. Things get complicated when Diego, Gavino’s daughter’s boyfriend, also ended up having an affair with his wife, putting a price on his head.
nine0011

For her part, Isabelle married Porfirio “El Corona” at the age of fifteen. At that time, he was a member of a northern music group whose career was just beginning to develop. Over the years, El Corona’s career has faded and he has become jealous, bitter, and neurotic, who physically abuses Isabelle for any reason. Isabelle tolerates the abuse, believing it is best for the children to keep the family together, until one day El Corona’s violence hits her children: Amanda and Ricardo.
nine0011

Isabelle runs away from her husband’s house with her children and takes refuge in Zoraida, a cleaner who works for Eliseo Hidalgo, mayor of Alamos, Sonora. Diego, the mayor’s brother, is also hiding from the drug business in the same house. Here their paths cross for the first time and forever. Eliseo hatches a plan to hide Diego outside of Sonora, assuming the identity of an American tourist who has just died in Sonora with his wife and son. To complete the prank, Isabelle must pretend to be Diego’s wife and make Ricardo her child.
nine0011

While this decision is an opportunity that Isabelle tried to escape from El Corona, it also involves leaving her eldest daughter and trusting the man she just met. Isabelle and Diego start a new life in Mexico City. They are completely opposite at first, but they learn to trust each other. El Corona and the drug addicts are quick to pursue them, the past always comes to the surface. But in the midst of the chase, Isabelle and Diego discover a passion and chemistry they’ve never known before, and it’s just a step towards achieving true love.

El Topo

“Mole” is a great movie, if limited, then “Mole” is a limited movie.

The popularity of the surreal spaghetti western, which is filled with political allusions, trolling of religion, references to Buddhism and gory scenes, we owe to the Elgin cinema in New York and its director Ben Barengoltz, who showed The Mole at night screenings. For several months, the hall was practically empty, after a while hippies began to come, somehow sniffing out about the film, and finally, the townsfolk, thrill-seekers, followed them. Eventually, The Mole caused a stir and became very popular among the Warhol crowd. John Lennon inscribed the picture in his favorite films. nine0011

It is pointless to write some kind of synopsis with the interpretation of this picture. You have to immerse yourself in the action and draw your own conclusions. Alejandro confirms our position:

Your film is full of religious references and mystical metaphors. By what principle are all these images combined with each other?

This film is like your mind: it is full of various images, religious and mystical. I am a painter. I don’t make comedy or tragedy, I don’t make a strictly political film, I don’t make a strictly religious film, I do everything. And you already make a choice on what to pay attention to. It’s like eating a cake: you choose the piece you like. I did not try to make the film philosophical, my picture is integral and this is called art, it cannot be philosophical, it is full of everything. I am not Hitchcock, Hitchcock guides you throughout the film, we know how you will react to this or that scene when you are scared or sad. Each viewer reacts differently to the scenes that I shoot. He may laugh, he may cry, he may be angry, I will not control his reaction. Nowadays, all directors dictate how you perceive the plot, they are more sellers than artists. nine1296

I wanted to shoot a giant run of rabbits – you know how bison run in cowboy films. But they brought me only three hundred rabbits. Three hundred live rabbits don’t make any sense. Three hundred dead, yes. So I came up with a plague scene and killed them all with my own hands. It turned out to be very easy: a rabbit is less protective of his life than a woman’s orgasm.

Did you risk your life for a movie?

Many times! For The Mole, I filmed men dancing in a Mexican cowboy’s home. One of them was so drunk that he started poking me in the face with a gun and saying: “Stop filming, otherwise I will kill you”, to which I replied: “Shoot, but I will also kill you by finishing my film. The sun was setting, I had no money for the return trip, but I knew for sure that nothing would happen to me.

Three films that Jodorowsky considers his own: The Mole, The Sacred Mountain, Holy Blood.

I do not make films with my eyes, like other directors, but with my eggs. I had three eggs, and after each film I lost one. Now I’m completely eggless, that’s why I have such a high voice, and now I can sing in the church choir.

“El Topo” begins with the wonderful lines: “A mole digs underground tunnels in search of the sun, and when it comes to the surface, the sun blinds it.” Have you ever been blinded by this metaphorical sun as a multidisciplinary artist? Truth and beauty are often at odds with each other in your films.0004

I’ll tell you a story. There was a certain Tibetan master who said: “Nothing is real, everything is an illusion.” And then one day, his disciples came to him with the sad news that his son, his only son, was dying, and he began to scream heart-rendingly. The students ask him, “Master, why are you shouting like that? Your son is just an illusion.” And the master replies: “Yes, but he was the most beautiful of all illusions.”
I think that today we cannot know the true beauty of things, but we continue to search for our beautiful illusions, the most beautiful thing in our life.
