  Well worth the trip. Some trails still closed from hurricane which was disappointing bit a nice contrast to beach and ocean activities. Drove in from North. Would like to drive in from the south next….

  Beautiful Falls this is a beautiful hike and the sounds of the frogs are beautiful. Nature lovers will have fun. Hikes are some what slippery so wear tennis shoes. Breathtaking Views in El Yunque…

28 natural objects located on different continents reached the final of the international competition “Seven Wonders of Nature”. As a result of voting, which will stop when the billionth vote is counted, the organizers will name seven unique objects worthy of being called the main wonders of nature on the planet.

The Seven Wonders of Nature competition is organized by the Swiss company New7Wonders, which has already identified the new seven wonders of the world. According to the results of the third round, the Amazon River and coastal forest, the Great Barrier Reef (Australia), Angel Falls (Venezuela), Iguazu Falls (Argentina, Brazil), Mount Vesuvius (Italy), Galapagos Islands (Ecuador), Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) ), Mount Matterhorn (Italy, Switzerland), Mount Yushan (Taiwan), Grand Canyon (USA), Jeita Grotto (Lebanon), mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan, Bay of Fundy (Canada), Halong Bay (Vietnam), Masurian Lake District (Poland) , Maldives (Maldives), Sundarbans Mangrove Forest (Bangladesh, India), Dead Sea (Israel, Jordan), Milford Sound Fjord (New Zealand), Komodo Island National Park (Indonesia), Jeju Island (Republic of Korea), Bu Islands -Tina (UAE), Puerto Princesa Park (Philippines), Uluru Rock (Australia), Moher Cliffs (Ireland), Table Mountain (South Africa), El Yunque Rainforest (Puerto Rico) and the Black Forest (Germany).

Mountains in Cuba

If you read about the resort cities of Cuba and its airports, paying attention to the height at which they are located, one gets the impression that this country is flat. Are there mountains in Cuba? There are, and occupy mountainous areas – about 25% of the country’s territory! They are simply located mainly in the central part of the island.

Mountains in the west

The mountains of the Cordillera de Guaniguanico are located in the west of Cuba. They stretch along the coast, starting from the Guanaacabibes peninsula. The composition of this mountain range, composed mainly of limestone rocks, includes mountain ranges:

• Sierra del Rosario;
• Sierra de los Organos.

Often these two mountain ranges are combined into one called Guaniguanico, because, in fact, this is one massif, divided into 2 parts by the San Diego River. These mountains are low (the highest peak of the Sierra del Rosario is Guahaibon, its height is only 692 m). The mountains are known for the abundance of karst caves and the amazing outlines of mogotes – limestone formations, whose age is about 150 million years. They resemble organ pipes, which is why the array has a second, unofficial name – Sierra de los Organos.

The Cordillera de Guaniguanico is home to a large number of UNESCO protected areas. In particular, the Sierra del Rosario is located on the territory of the biosphere reserve of the same name. There are many research programs that involve the local population. The Cordillera de Guaniguanico is home to many endemic animals and plants. In addition, agricultural land is located on the mountain slopes: tobacco and coffee are grown here.

Central part of the island

The mountains of central Cuba are:

• Sierra de Trinidad;
• Sierra de Escambray;
• Santa Clara Highlands.

The highest point of the Sierra de Trinidad is Mount San Juan, its height is 1156 m. wonderful landscapes, in particular – waterfalls. There are many minerals here, but since their extraction is dangerous for the environment, there is no mining.

There are also protected areas, the most famous of which is the Valley of De los Ingenios, or the Valley of the Sugar Mills, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. De los Ingenios is a popular tourist area, people come here to admire the local nature and see the abandoned and still cultivated sugarcane plantations, old plantation houses and sugar factories.

South of the country

The Sierra Maestro mountains are located in the south of Cuba. This is the highest mountain system of the state. It is here that the highest point of Cuba is located – Pico Turquino, whose height is 1974 m. Around the peak is the Turquino National Park, which is also called the Sierra Maestro Park. There are two historical sights here: firstly, its top is crowned with a bust of Jose Marti, and secondly, the headquarters of Fidel Castro is located right there, in which the rebels were preparing to overthrow the Baptista regime.

There are other protected areas in the Sierra Maestra mountains, in particular, part of the foothills are located on the territory of the Baconao National Park, stretching from the mountains to the Caribbean Sea.

Also not to mention the El Yunque mountain, located 7 km from the city of Baracoa and not far from the bay of the same name. This table mountain is relatively low (575 m), and it is known primarily for the fact that Christopher Columbus mentioned it in his chronicles. Since 1979, El Yunque has been a national natural monument.

Northeast and East of Cuba

In the east of the country lies the Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa range. It is partly located in the province of Holguin, partly in Guantanamo and consists of such ranges as:

• Sierra de Nipe;
• Sierra del Cristal;
• Sierra de Purial;
• Cuchillas de Toa.

Sierra del Cristal is located near Holguin. It stretches along a rather narrow coastal plain. The highest mountain has the same name as the massif itself, its height is 1231 m. The massif and its foothills are the territory of the Sierra Cristal National Park, founded in 1930.

The territory of Cuchillas de Toa is included in the biosphere reserve, which bears the same name. It is believed that it is here that most of the endemics of Cuba grow and the largest variety of animal and plant species is found.
