another trap when planning time / Sudo Null IT News

The correlation between work and rest for a short period of time can be traced very simply. If you didn’t sleep at night, your head buzzes during the day, it’s difficult to concentrate, it’s practically impossible to work ( I emphasize that hereinafter we are talking about intellectual work ).

But the longer phases, the period of which is several months, are much more difficult to trace. Although these phases are just as real as the short-term phases.

So. Often, these long phases are not taken into account in time planning. A person naively believes that he will be equally productive all the time throughout the whole year. This “trap” falls into those people who are just starting to plan their time on their own: freelancers, individual developers, and so on.

Every active phase is followed by a period of “inactivity”. The main symptoms that you have begun a period of inactivity:

  • Productivity drops significantly.
  • The thought process slows down. The ability to solve problems is reduced (I think this can be confirmed by IQ tests). Sometimes it’s hard to remember a word.
  • Losing interest in research, new directions.
  • It is difficult to concentrate, thoughts are confused.
  • After waking up, fatigue sets in quickly (after 3-4 hours).

In this case, as people say, you need a vacation.

It is worth noting that human physiology in this matter does not correspond to the accepted public opinion: according to public opinion, vacation is needed no more than once a year, regardless of the type of work, whether it is intellectual or physical labor. If a person is not informed about this physiological property of his, he begins to think that something is wrong with him, the poor fellow, and look for a problem in himself (to worry about this). Or go on the rampage and force yourself to work (which can lead to insomnia, nervousness, depression, and even mental disorder).

This is not the most interesting part. From my experience, I noticed this:

  1. The onset of a period of inactivity depends on the load during the work period.
  2. The exit from the idle phase depends on the quality of the rest.

Again, from my own experience, I can say that you can work “to the fullest” for a maximum of 2-2.5 months, after which there comes a period of almost complete inactivity.

For necessary rest. If you have an active rest (spend most of your time in nature, away from the computer), then it takes about 1.5 months to restore strength. With passive rest (more sleep, participation in forums, reading articles / news, watching movies + occasionally doing something), it will take up to 3 (!) months to restore strength. In any case, do not count on a quick recovery of strength: the rest process is measured in months, but not in days.

What follows from this?

  • When planning the time for a project, keep in mind that your energy will run out after a certain time and you will need to rest. How many months you have enough – depends on the health and activity of the work.
  • If you are not in control of your time and you are required to work 8 hours every day – do not work at full strength (that is, “shirk” moderately from work). If this is not done, then in a few months you will not be physically able to work (you may not make it until the vacation).

Why am I writing all this?

After searching for information, I came to the conclusion that there are no serious studies on this issue. I invite you to share your observations on these issues in the comments :

  1. How many months can you work continuously without a drop in productivity? It is worth clarifying the percentage of daily load (100% is when there is no strength left to do anything else, just fall on the bed and sleep).
  2. How many months does it take you to fully recover from a period of inactivity? How does the quality of rest affect?

P.S.

At this level of development of our civilization, it is generally accepted that the optimal variant of the ratio of work / rest is 11/1 (11 months of work and 1 month of rest). This scheme has not been confirmed by any serious studies. It was formed historically for physical labor and was projected onto intellectual labor.

I am convinced that the average person does not have the strength to work intellectually to the fullest for all 11 months (even 8 hours a day). Therefore, workers placed in such conditions are forced to “take off” in various ways (whether it’s smoking breaks, flames on forums, reading articles, etc.).

Why you should not create services for travel planning – Offtop on vc.ru

As a startup founder
WorldMate and Desti (which also took over Pinnr), I get letters every week from entrepreneurs who have launched or are considering launching a travel startup.

The vast majority of them follow this pattern:

  • The pitch starts with “if you are an X, it’s very difficult to plan a trip”, where X is any of the many types of travelers – from ordinary tourists to millennial vegan honeymooners who plan their entire trip with an iPhone .
  • A solution is, of course, an application or site that combines curated content, powerful search capabilities (e.g., natural language-aware semantic search metasearch), information-gathering and “scheduling” technology, functionality that uses social networks for trip inspiration or joint planning, publication of reviews, reports and photos.
  • The business model is to make money on affiliate programs and some advertising, because “the average hotel booking check is hundreds of dollars, and we can earn 10-15% on affiliate programs.”
  • The prerequisites for creating the project are as follows: “Since our project contributes to a much better user experience for travelers, we will get a viral effect with the spread of information about us like wildfire!” Thus, the user acquisition strategy boils down to a PR campaign, which should be followed by word of mouth communication about the project (word of mouth) and a viral effect (“everyone will share their photos, questions, trips”).

Now, since this
more or less repeating the words from the business plan of my startup Desti, I would like to sympathize with all of them.

However, despite the sympathy, often my reviews rather rudely return the founders of projects from heaven to sinful earth. I hope this article helps
save someone time by pointing out a number of false assumptions and key blind spots that exist in the minds of entrepreneurs starting out in this space.

Also, I’ll suggest some moves that might work.

Premise: Travel planning is not working properly and we can fix it (can’t we?)

This is how online travel planning works.

As a traveler, you have already taken
some key decisions – you have some understanding of who, when, where and why is going.

In addition, you have a number of preferences – brands, budget, and so on. You need to decide how you will get to the destination of the trip, where you will live and what you will do within these preferences, so you do the following:

  • Do a lot of searches on different topics with different restrictions – for example, “what flights are there on Monday and what if we fly on Sunday”, “what are our options in terms of choosing a hotel, but what about staying in an apartment or house”.
  • Gather alternatives, understand their uses, and rank them—for example, “Route 1 is better because it’s more scenic, but that means we need to stay overnight in Oxnard.”
  • Share your plan with other trip participants and get their opinion.
  • Repeat the previous steps until you run out of time and the moment of decision comes.
  • Book a trip and hit the road.

The current situation in
the online market is not very good at supporting this process.

Online travel agencies and metasearch are not very good at rating hotels (often doing it deliberately), Tripadvisor and Yelp are not much better, as you need to read dozens of reviews about each place to make a final decision.

That’s why you have to search on many sites, sometimes using regular search engines, sometimes following links from companies that you already know.

Travel sites return entire catalogs of results for each query, so you have to scroll through many options and delve into the analysis of each individual item in the list to see if something suits you.

If your search boundaries are not strictly defined (you don’t know exactly what you want to do and where exactly), you have to spend a lot of time searching.

As soon as you receive
any assumptions, there is no way to easily and quickly turn them into a plan.

It doesn’t matter if you find options for a trip on one site or on many – these sites are not suitable for planning in any case. Their job is to convert you into a customer.

So usually sites don’t offer tools to save for later, share or compare results. You have to maintain lists in Excel/Word/Google Docs and so on, which you share with your companions using mostly email.

And so many of those who are trying to create a new product assume that everything that search will do, gathering information in one place and being able to share it better, is a step in the right direction.

Thus, if the “New Service” is able to provide a great user experience, which is based on the use of smart artificial intelligence, which deeply understands your intentions (“you are going on a romantic trip!”), personalizes the search results (“you prefer to stay at the Marriott” !”), adds a social confirmation factor (“your friend was here!”) and context-based analytics (“you are going on a trip in July, and the hotel is right next to the beach!”), collects all this on a map, automatically plans best itineraries and compare prices on countless sites – you will realize that the “New Service” is much better than what you are using now and start using the “New Service” to plan your trip, save time, reduce stress and enjoy trips.

Q.E.D.

And in
Yet-another-travel-newco.com business plan we read:

“Our superior content and the resulting user experience will help keep users engaged with our product. They will bring their companions to our site. They will all plan their trips on our website and we will see exponential growth!”

So why doesn’t it work

Let’s assume that the product execution of your startup is perfection itself. You penetrated the very essence and created the perfect
a travel planner that can be used by a significant number of travelers.

The thing is small – you just need:

  • Make it so that many travelers know about your site just when they are going on a trip.
  • Quickly and easily teach them how to use your product so that they understand that the investment of time in learning how your service works will pay off and that your service is really worth using for trip planning.
  • Make sure they actually use your service to make hotel reservations and everything else so you get your affiliate commissions.
  • Invest affiliate royalties in acquiring new users (competing for them with those who pay you these royalties).
  • That’s it.

Let’s start with the fact that you need to acquire users. And you know what? If they are not planning a trip, they are not interested in
travel planners. They will simply filter out the information that you exist.

People from all sides are constantly bombarded with information about new sites, apps, brands, and they filter out what is not relevant to them at the moment.

That’s why you keep seeing GEICO ads (
American insurance company – approx. per. ) on TV – the only way to get your attention at those moments when you think about insurance (1-2 times a year) is to constantly flicker before your eyes.

So, no matter how much press, word of mouth, or virality you get, it only matters if the information is relevant.

This inevitably means that you need to advertise a lot. And no, “free” ways to get users (like SEO) can’t help you scale in mature markets in 2015.

Priceline Group (
owner of Booking.com, Agoda, Kayak and other sites – approx. per. ) spends $2 billion a year on Google Adwords alone – guess why?

Now, let’s say you actually get the attention of a user who’s planning a trip, either for free or through a paid ad.

Now your task is to teach him a new way of planning a trip, based on a new way of interacting with the service, which is different from what he used before. At the same time, he must trust the search results and content that you provide him, more than established brands.

All this must happen before he decides to book a trip, but at the same time he must remain a user of your service until the booking is made.

Of course, they must share the trip with their companions, and they should also start using your product, even if one of them shares a link to a house they found on Airbnb that is not available for booking through your app.

That would be great, given the fact that the user engagement schedule for new apps and sites is usually L-shaped, whether it’s games, planners, or recipe apps.

Suppose a certain percentage of users realize the benefits of the service, however, without a reason that will encourage them to return to the service again and again, many more users will fall off over time.

Okay, let’s say your service is so great that it influences a significant number of travelers to book a trip and thus they book a trip through your service and you get your affiliate commissions that can be reinvested in acquiring new users, right?

May be.

Many
Travel startups are faced with the fact that users use their services to get information, and then go to book a trip to the resources they trust more – be it an online travel agency, a hotel or an airline.

This happens even if your site has a “Book with [X]!” It’s a habit that takes time to change. If the buyer can purchase the same thing at the same price where he has already made a purchase, why not?

Brent Hoberman, co-founder of Lastminute.com: “We saw good traffic coming to us, but it took us 2 years for the traffic to start converting on our site.”

Let’s say you solved this problem too, and your users go through the entire funnel before booking through your service, so they can take their affiliate commission. But who pays the commission?

Those same
An online travel agency or metasearch that you are competing with for user attention.

And you know what?
They buy traffic with the commission they receive. So if you get X from the booking, they get twice as much. So who will end up winning the ad auction price war?

Competing with someone who pays you an affiliate commission for the same users is obviously not the best strategy, especially when the user knows about the existence of both of you.

So what works

First, if you are an end user, then I encourage you to use travel planners. We removed Desti from the Appstore when we sold it to Nokia in 2014, and since then planning family trips has become much more difficult for me personally, often I hear the same thing from my friends and colleagues.

The problem is that the best product does not always mean good business. However, there are some strategies that sometimes work.

Probably the best thing is to sell what no one else has. If users know that your site is the only place they can buy X, and they want X because it’s better, cheaper, or just special, they’ll come to you for X.

It worked great for Airbnb – most of what they offer was simply not on the market before; it worked well during the days of HotelTonight, when the hotels they had could not be booked anywhere else at such attractive prices, and so on.

That’s why the most important thing for Expedia and Priceline (Booking.com) is to get as many hotels in their systems as possible.

Of course, if you follow this path, you will become a marketplace or a retailer, not
travel planner.

Another approach is based on the understanding that
the travel planner saves time and effort, that is, it is, in fact, a means to increase productivity, which means that it can be monetized according to the SaaS model.

AT
In a sense, WorldMate and Tripit were not travel companies – they were companies that simplified the business processes of collecting business travel information and using it while traveling.

This approach is based on the business of corporate
travel agencies – companies pay them to keep employees focused on work in the company, and not on travel problems.

However, the corporate agency segment is not the fastest growing these days.

There is also
B2B2C model. Content curation capabilities, improved search, personalization, social proofs and so on can be used by online travel agencies, metasearch to improve their conversion, increase check size and reduce user acquisition cost.

The white label or technology vendor model works if your product fits really well into the offering of those who will use it, and is complex enough to implement, while also being easy to integrate in which you will not hit anyone’s corns.
