Locations from Avatar

With stunning visuals, James Cameron’s Avatar became a box-office phenomenon and has been #1 commercially successful film of all time for over a year now. Do you think that only the planet Pandora can be fantastically beautiful? No no and one more time no! After all, Cameron drew inspiration from our “home”, on Earth, he found it in the protected corners of the planet, in bewitching landscapes, outlandish trees and in amazing natural phenomena. Here are 10 places on Earth that gave life to Avatar. nine0003

Angel Falls, Venezuela

When Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) try to catch a dragon bird, they find themselves near a delightful place similar to Angel Falls in Venezuela, named after the US pilot Angel. The pilot flew over the wonder of nature in 1937. This is part of the national park, which is reached only by river or by air. Angel Falls is the highest waterfall in the world (979 meters). Water overthrows in a continuous stream, the height of its fall is 807 meters. nine0003

Havasu Falls, Grand Canyon, USA

Another waterfall similar to the one shown in Avatar is Havasu, located in the Grand Canyon. Opal waters are the perfect landscape for science fiction. Havasu is the most photographed waterfall in the world because the color of its jets is simply unreal! And to swim in the pool where the stream falls is an indescribable bliss.

Mount Roraima, Venezuela

The planet Pandora has impressive “floating” rocks. And here, too, it is easy to draw analogies with an earthly miracle – Mount Roraima in Venezuela, high, with a flat top that seems to be cut off. The mountain is surrounded by clouds, which makes it seem suspended in the air. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle described it in his fantasy novel The Lost World (this isolated place has endemic plants and animals). Roraima also appears in the Pixar cartoon Up. nine0003

Socotra Island, Yemen

If we talk about endemics, then the Socotra archipelago (Yemen) in the Arabian Sea is just a storehouse of unique biodiversity. More than 37% of the plants here are endemic. For example, cinnabar-red dracaena or the futuristic “bottle tree” (scientific name – adenium obese Socotra). All of them became the inspiration for the flora of Pandora with his Tree of Life. No wonder the Socotra Islands are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

nine0002

Northern Lights, Iceland

The night sky on the planet in “Avatar” looks like a physical body, undulating, pulsating, iridescent with dozens of colors, seemingly dancing. Doesn’t it remind you of anything? Of course, the northern lights! It can be observed over the Arctic Circle and near it – in Iceland, Lapland, Norway, the northern regions of Russia, of course, during the cold season, when the black-velvet skies are colored and play with all shades of blue, green, pink. nine0003

New Zealand, phosphorescent caves

On Pandora there are fascinating luminous creatures and phosphorescent representatives of the plant world. And on Earth, you can find several places that resemble the fluorescent world of Avatar. If you go to New Zealand or Australia, you will find wonderful caves there. Although you will be underground, it will seem to you that above you is not a rocky vault, but the night starry sky. This is due to the cave dwellers, the arachnocampi (fungal mosquito or shining worm), which phosphoresces and illuminates the caves. In fact, everything is more mundane than you thought, no miracles: a fly larva lives in a silky nest on cave walls, in which slime is formed to attract and catch prey. nine0003

Bay on Vieques Island, Puerto Rico

You can also get a surreal experience by visiting the fluorescent bay on the island of Vieques (Puerto Rico). The visual perfection of the Baia Bioluminiscente stunned the Spanish colonists in the early 1500s, who thought it was the work of the devil and dammed the three rivers that flow into the ocean. The glow is due to microorganisms, of which there are myriads.

Mycena chlorophoros, Japan and Brazil

Earth certainly doesn’t shine as intensely as Pandora, but the few phosphorescent species that thrive on our planet are simply amazing! These include mycena chlorophoros mushrooms (Mycena chlorophos), found in Brazil and Japan. During the rainy season, the mushrooms begin to glow in the dark with an intense green. Even the ground next to them shines from the spores scattered across it.

Tree Root Bridges, India

Some Pandora landscapes are as intricate and amazing as these forest back streets of the Indian provinces. Residents of local villages have long learned to use the roots of trees in order to build river crossings. Some of these sustainable bridges are over 500 years old and still strong enough to support up to 50 people at a time. An excellent example of using natural resources without trying to harm the environment. nine0003

Rocks, Hunan Province of China

Rocks from the Wulingyuan Conservation Area in China’s Hunan province played a major role in the creation of Pandora’s “suspended” cliffs. 25 minutes of Avatar were filmed in this amazing location. Almost a thousand-meter rocky peaks covered with dense vegetation are the main attraction of Zhangjiajie Park. When the peaks are covered with clouds, it seems that they are floating in the air. Fantasy!

White house. Nameless paranormal phenomena

Over the years, ufologists have accumulated a voluminous baggage of stories about the observation of various UFOs on the island, and especially many stories that local residents observed of the most diverse strange creatures . There were also the famous gray aliens (grey) , and giants two meters tall and tiny dwarfs and those creatures that began to be called chupacabra . nine0003

In his book “Underwater UFOs”, ufologist Vladimir Azhazha cites some of these stories, which were originally published in the books of Puerto Rico explorer, English ufologist Timothy Good, who published such books as “Invasion Threat” and “Alien Bases”.

1967 Irma Otis from New York told how, during a summer study expedition in the vicinity of El Yunque (National Wildlife Refuge), a group of students from the Rio Piedras College of Puerto Rico, together with Professor Gonzales, observed a luminous creature at night, about two meters tall, very thin, with with long, knee-length arms, dressed in a silver body-hugging jumpsuit. nine0003

It emerged from the dense forest shortly after the disappearance of the student Ramon Quinones. The discussion of what happened immediately stopped, everyone was in a state of stupor for about 15 minutes, until the “luminous subject”, slowly backing away, disappeared into the thickets. Only after that did everyone regain the ability to move. The search for Ramon by the forestry service and the military turned up nothing. All witnesses were warned not to disclose the incident. That year, the roads around El Yunque were often blocked by the police. nine0003

Cases of strange disappearances of people in this area of Puerto Rico (especially children!) are also not uncommon. It all started in 1961, when children began to disappear from the east coast of El Yunque and in the vicinity of the adjacent mountains.

On July 25, 1973, seven-year-old Antonio Alemar disappeared under mysterious circumstances in the foothills of El Yunque. Soldiers and volunteers searched unsuccessfully for the child for several weeks.

Between 1961 and 1978 (in 17 years) 36 cases of missing children were officially registered on El Yunque, although the real figure could be much higher. nine0089

February 1976. Several cases of disappearance of the military. From the base of Ceiba (the eastern tip of the island, near Mount El Yunk), two US naval officers disappeared without a trace. Their disappearance was reported in the local newspaper El Bocero on 2 March. Sources in the military leadership of Puerto Rico revealed that some of the soldiers missing on El Yunque were officially listed as “missing” in the Vietnam War.

1973 Oct. The wife and five-year-old daughter of José Alemar met with a strange creature. They sat in a closed car while Jose said goodbye to his family. Suddenly, the woman heard her husband’s voice nearby: “Anna, I’m here, open the door for me!” But her daughter screamed in fright, and Anna, to her horror, saw a long three-fingered hand on the windshield. She looked like a chicken paw. The stranger’s head was ovoid, with pointed ears and large black eyes. The creature reacted to their cries by disappearing. nine0003

A strange object in the sky of Puerto Rico. 2009

1977 July. Contact in development. Contacts of a 42-year-old resident of Quebradillas with green-skinned lizard-like four-fingered creatures, about a meter tall, lasted several months, after which psychic abilities were discovered in him. But, unable to withstand the persecution of the aliens, in October he sold the house and moved to a small village.

1977 26 August. Two creatures with scaly skin like fish, four-fingered, very long arms and a large flattened head were discovered by a secretary of a commercial firm in a conference room studying a wall map of the island. At the scream of the woman, they ran to the window and jumped out. nine0003

1980 March 22. A guard at a hospital in Aguadilla (a coastal town in the northwest of the island) at night, after a warning, shot three times at a meter-tall stranger with four fingers on long, thin hands. I remember the big mouth, flat wide nose and “donkey” ears. There was a misfire twice, on the third shot the creature reacted by teleportation.

1980 . Sick (with a high temperature) police officer Ivan River Morales was kidnapped from his house at night by two gray creatures (due to severe joint pain, he prayed to heaven for recovery). Rivera was taken aboard a UFO, in which they dived off the southwest coast of Puerto Rico and ended up at an alien base underground, in the area of Lake Laguna Cartagena. I woke up at home three hours later healthy. nine0003

1988 June. Several cases of visits to the alien base. Carlos Manuel Mercado was taken at night by three gray, earless, 120 cm tall, from his house and taken aboard a disc-shaped UFO, commanded by a hybrid, medic, 180 cm tall. Then they ended up in an underground base of aliens under Mount El Kahul, next to Lake Aaguna Kartagena.

The base was a production line for the repair of disc-shaped and triangular aircraft. There he was told that they had been here for a long time, with peaceful purposes, and were not going to leave here. “We bring many here so that everyone knows the truth – we want mutually beneficial cooperation.” The other guest was a high-ranking officer. His testimony matched Mercado’s. Two more people from the inhabitants managed to secretly get inside the base through the ventilation shaft, where they saw the US military as a guard. nine0003

1989 April. Mass vivisection of livestock. On Ceiba Norte, near Gurabo, “an avalanche” of cases of animal mutilation hit. Residents blamed the so-called chupacabra – animals unknown to science, sucking blood. At this time, Senor Ortiz, who was fishing with friends in the Jaguas River, heard a strange dog howling from a tree at night. When the howling creature was illuminated by a beam of a strong lantern, something similar to a bird fell to the ground.

She was seized, carried to the village and put in a cage. The ferocious animal ate only raw meat, had large fangs, like a snake. Her head was without feathers and had pimply skin, like that of a toad. After federal agents seized the find, a photo of the snake bird remained. nine0003

Chupacabra. Artist’s fantasy

1989 , July. Several cases of meetings with aliens. Local residents have repeatedly noticed grays near Lake Aaguna Kartagena. Medina from La Parguera also met with five aliens in July. He later saw them twice more. Medina gave a detailed description of them and expressed the opinion that the aliens have a base in the area, and the authorities do not want them to go to the surface.

1989 , December 1st. Aliens in the yard. A girl in Caguas saw from the window of her house in the courtyard two grayish-green creatures with large round heads, large black eyes and long arms hanging down like whips. She ran to look for one of the adults, but did not find it and returned to the window. A small red ball floated in that place, but it soon disappeared. That same night, a neighbor saw a round UFO hovering over the place with multi-colored lights.

1990 31 August. Contact with the grays did not take place. In the Cavo Rojo area, residents met five newcomers. Miguel Fuguiero rode closer to them to get a better look, but was stopped by the gaze of one of them, which caused a state of catalepsy. And five, in appearance typical gray, short, thin, with large heads and a mouth in the form of a slit, large slanting eyes, continued to walk towards Lake Laguna Cartagena. nine0003

1991 13 August. Several cases. Four-toed gray, completely naked, twice, with a gap of two weeks, appeared on the balcony of Marisol Camacho, who lives in the village of Maguayo, near Lake Laguna Cartagena, the first time at two in the morning, the second time in the afternoon. They were interested in the tropical plant “Swiss cheese”. While they tore off the leaves and stacked them, the hostess was in a daze. Later, in early September, in the evening, she observed a low flyover of a UFO over her house. nine0003

1991 Aug. The stranger was frightened of the motorcyclist. At noon, Ulis Perez was riding a motorcycle along an irrigation canal near Lake Aaguna Kartagena when he saw a creature – gray, as the press describes it, only the alien’s skin was matte white, and his eyes were large and black. He was sitting on a log, in fright he jumped into the canal and disappeared into the thickets of lilies. The eyewitness managed to see the membranes between the fingers.

1991 September. A group of aliens in the house. Eleteiro Acosta, 80, who lives near the balloon, entered his house and found six aliens inside. He yelled at them indignantly and brandished his cane. The tallest of the uninvited guests spoke briefly with the others, after which everyone jumped out the open window and went towards the Sierra Barmeya ridge. nine0003

1991 Oct. The Grays took away her child from the inhabitant of the island. Housewife Delia V., mother of two children, became interested in yoga and during meditation asked to give her the highest knowledge. After leaving class early, she went to bed. Before I could fall asleep, I felt someone’s hand on my face, and the next moment I felt that I was flying somewhere up. Houses, streets remained below. Fear paralyzed the woman.

She woke up in bed at five in the morning. In the months that followed, I realized that I was pregnant. Once I noticed a silver UFO in the sky and immediately found myself in a metal room, surrounded by a dozen small gray creatures. Then she remembered her cry in pain and an attempt to explain that she would not be able to give birth, since her children were born by caesarean section. Waking up, I saw a stranger with a baby in his arms. nine0003

Gray aliens appear as small beings with very large heads and large, almond-shaped black eyes. They have no ears, and instead of a nose, two holes. The body is thin and often without clothes. Sexual characteristics are not observed.

1995 March 11th. Near the town of Orocovis, farmer Enrique Barreto Gernandez found eight dead sheep in his paddock. Each of them had three small holes on the chest, without traces of blood. By November 1995, the number of mutilated pets in Puerto Rico, including sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, dogs and pigs, had reached several hundred. nine0003

According to eyewitnesses, the guilty creature had three toes each with five-centimeter long claws and thin gray-yellow-brown skin. One police officer fired at a mysterious creature that attacked his guard dog and smelled a disgusting smell of blood, reminiscent of the smell of stagnant sewage. Some residents of the island directly point to the connection between the appearance of the Chupacabra and the UFO invasion.

1995 end of September. Computer technician Juan Murati was walking to his car around 5:00 pm when he felt a gaze. Turning around, he fell into a state of shock: at a distance of 15 meters from him, a “scarecrow” half a meter tall was sitting on a tree. nine0003

Huge, orange eyes, round and red, like ketchup, attracted attention. Suddenly the creature spread its wings, flapped them loudly and flew away. A month later, he again saw him in a tree, and in the evening of that day, the largest of his guard dogs was dead. On her neck, he found two “vampire” holes.

1995 , Nov. Many residents met with Chupacabra. The descriptions of the animal vampire coincide: height – up to 130 centimeters, huge almond-shaped eyes, a narrow face, oblong holes instead of a nose, a pear-shaped head without ears, a thin neck with almost no hair, sharp spikes protrude from the top of the head through the back of the head and along the ridge. In the stories, cases of their reasonable behavior were noted. nine0003

1996 . The military got “anomalous works of nature.” Sisters Lillian and Valkyria da Silva, 14 and 16 years old, met two strange creatures near an abandoned house on the edge of a forest: large, vertically elongated red eyes, sinewy shoulders, growths on the head and brownish skin.

On the same day, firefighters caught a similar creature and gave it to the military. It behaved peacefully, made rumbling sounds and smelled unpleasant. And in the evening, the same stranger was caught at the construction site by two military police officers, but the creature soon fell ill with an incomprehensible disease and died a month later. nine0003

1998 summer. The American magazine “Unsensored UFO Reports” told in detail about the skirmish between children and gnomes in Puerto Rico. Wandering through caves in the mountains of Tetas de Cayey, near Salinas, curious teenagers encountered a large group of dwarfs , 30 centimeters tall.

They tried to grab the leg of a boy named José Luis Sayas. But he managed to fight back with a stick, with which he cut the skull of the creature. From the hole formed, a clear liquid like egg white flowed out in abundance. nine0003

The guy brought the corpse of the dwarf home and put it in a jar of formaldehyde. The creature had a thin torso and a disproportionately large head. The skin was gray-green in color, with an olive tint. Instead of a nose, there are two holes; instead of ears, there are skin folds pointed upwards. A lipless mouth, huge colorless eyes with vertical pupils complemented his almost bald head. It was clearly male, had long arms below the knees and short legs. The fingers and toes were webbed and ended in cat claws. Many scientific experts could not identify it. nine0003

1998 . Researcher X. Martin collected information about small creatures on the island. Local residents have long noticed tiny neighbors. When people appeared, they hid in crevices of rocks, in caves or in deep vertical tunnels. Sometimes the roar of a powerful water stream was heard from there. Rumor has it that a network of tunnels covers a significant part of the island. Often, strange orange-yellow spheres, 10–20 centimeters in diameter, are observed next to them, rapidly descending from the mountains into the forest thicket.
