Another building where tours take place: on a pedestrian street, in a nearby building, a tourist information center, nearby a creepy bust of Columbus, well, and here is this modern bust of Columbus. ..
Nothing special if it weren’t for the guide’s regular tales, one way or another linking this church with the name of Christopher Columbus – go check it out! In this town, on this island, any more or less old building located near the sea-ocean is usually associated with this name: well, who doesn’t know him?!
And so, a church, of which there are many throughout Spain, without any unusual features. And tourist groups swirl inside and out, one after the other…

Faro de San Cristobal: view from the sea. I mean, from the ocean…

A year and a half ago, while walking along San Sebastian de la Gomera, they came to the lighthouse – both to look at it, and from the lighthouse to see the ocean coast .. Island of memory of Columbus and Fred Olsen

And I liked it, by God! One day to rush to La Gomera and, alas, back. Wonderful weather (an obligatory component!), the even breathing of the ocean, the transparent horizon and the island of aspiration are on that very horizon in a light haze. Even without looking at some of the obvious disadvantages of such a voyage, related … more on that later.
This island, according to the old Soviet tradition, could be renamed “Fr. them. Fred Olsen”, so much is connected with this name on the island. From the ferry of the same name, which has the outlines of a torpedo boat and the same course, to the remains of a trading pier on the other side of the island and the remains of a once-thriving business.
An island by virtue of its birth: dad is a Volcano, very mountainous wooded, which, precisely, is its main wealth. The historical and local history component of a trip around the island is absolutely minimal. The tiny capital, San Sebastian, with a population of just over 6,000 islanders, with charming (if that fascinates you) ancient buildings, and pavements that still remember Columbus, who refueled his caravels here on his way to the New World – “the last tavern before the outpost” . … The central temple with a fresco depicting a sea battle, which is absolutely incredible for such a place (it comes to me that a certain abbot was a direct participant – that’s what hit me). Small towns about one street, nestled on a stone visor reclaimed from the ocean and rocks. Local cuisine, which you will be introduced to under the outlandish whistling of the endemic island language, the prototype of mobile phones, because in this way it was possible to communicate in the mountains over fairly long distances, and which the restaurant employees will demonstrate to you with characteristic skill while you are eating lentil stew. And a lot of legends associated with the island, purely synthetic (so as not to be boring) and truly folklore (from a cognitive point of view), generously presented to your curious (otherwise why are you here) attention by the guide during the entire movement along the route.
In good clear weather, from one of the observation decks on the rock, you can admire the spectacle of the majestic peak of Teide (Tenerife), like a mirage growing out of the ocean haze. In any weather, along the route, you will be offered, at points on observation decks or other stops, local products: very good wines, local cheeses, natural aloe vera cosmetics, palm honey (not honey at all, but condensed juice of one of the unique local palm trees But tasty and healthy). Think for yourself, decide for yourself, you won’t save for a lifetime, but it will help to prolong pleasant memories.
The treasure of the island, which has no more than five main roads, twisted by a devilish serpentine through the gorges and peaks conquered from the rocks, in its past life – goat paths, namely, picturesque rocks with peaks, each of which has its own name and legend, and a perfect magical view of heather forest. The trunks of trees (a giant tree-like heather!) are completely covered with shaggy moss, which, if we ignore the hubbub and the vain movement of those who have come in large numbers, creates a complete tactile feeling of being in a fairy tale, the name of which I have long forgotten, but the content is just not remembered. Meditative atmosphere, you just have to go a little deeper into the thicket. But more than this “a little” your guide will not allow you, because – tsygel-tsygel, ah-lu-lu, “Mikhail Svetlov” (i.e. – your ferry is at the pier!) is already under steam and will not wait for you. The last flight of the day departs back to Tenerife at about five, and if you don’t have time by this time, you will spend the night at the nearest hotel, and then return the next day at your own expense. This “gypsy-tsygel” along the entire route, perhaps, is the intense inconvenience of the trip, adding a tar shade of some kind of regret from the unseen, under-felt, other “under-” ah! – to honey gold from the impressions received, what they managed to perceive, feel, evaluate.
But if you pack yourself, stay on the island for a while, drive yourself along the serpentine of mountain roads in a rented car and linger in a heather fairy tale on your own – which is quite possible and by no means forbidden, then get ready for a serious test for your budget.
Everything else is the splash of the waves astern!

La Gomera – the island of my dreams

For the first time I saw the silhouette of the island of La Gomera 20-24 years ago, from the coast of Tenerife, Playa de Las Americas.
Anyone who comes to the Canary Islands for the first time experiences a considerable shock, especially if it happened when Russia is already experiencing a cold winter.
I got there just for the first time.
There are enough miracles in Tenerife, but La Gomera sunk into the soul immediately and forever.
I spent many hours looking at the map of island 9 on Google0411 Several times I tried to find a way to get to the island, and finally everything worked out.
Getting to La Gomera in 2019 is not easy, but very simple.
From the port of Los Americas, two large ferries go there daily to the port in the city of San Sebastian.
As a tourist site, the island began to be used quite recently, with the construction of a road along which it can be bypassed almost along the perimeter.
Riding a hefty tourist bus along mountain serpentines, where even two small cars can’t go everywhere, is the most exciting attraction on the island so far. But a set of quite decent tourist sites has already appeared, which the guides enthusiastically present.
The smart guys who think of organizing sailboat cruises around La Gomera will get the biggest score.
Already, La Gomera is the most difficult island to book a hotel in the Canary Islands.
