El Fuerte de San Cristóbal, monumento que sobresale en lo alto de Gracias, Lempira

Como edificio militar, está ubicado geoestratégicamente en lo alto del cerro de San Cristóbal de la ciudad de Gracias, lo que permite una vista completa del lugar y valle.

Su construcción fue ordenada en 1850 por el presidente Juan Nepomuceno Fernández Lindo, conocido  como Juan Lindo, en una hacienda que era de su propiedad, debido a las amenazas de invasión que existían desde Guatemala y El Salvador, en el marco de las luchas entre conservadores y liberales que asolaron a Centroamérica en el siglo XIX.

A la muerte de Juan Lindo, su cuerpo fue sepultado en el interior de la fortaleza. La construcción no se inicia sino hasta 1864 siendo presidente,  José María Medina y se finaliza en 1875.

En la entrada principal de la fortaleza se exhiben dos cañones que fueron traídos de la fortaleza de San Fernando de Omoa, en la costa norte de Honduras. El fuerte lleva el nombre de San Cristóbal cuyo nombre significa “el que lleva a Cristo”, también es conocido como Cristóforo, que en griego significa “porta Cristo”. En la iconografía cristiana este santo se le destaca por su fortaleza física la que se asemeja a la de un gigante, y probablemente de ahí deviene el nombre asignado a la fortaleza.

En España y en América Latina hay varias fortalezas que han sido bautizadas bajo el nombre de este santo (como la de Puerto Rico, Pamplona, San Juan, Badajoz y Navarra, entre otras).

Aparentemente el diseño se inspiró en la fortaleza de San Fernando de Omoa, el fuerte está construido sobre un área de terreno de 59,992.74 metros cuadrados. El edificio consta de una sola nave rectangular con dos fachadas, la principal con 3 puertas de acceso con cargadores de madera y la posterior con 4 ventanas. El edificio fue construido con adobe y revestimientos de cal y arena.

El Fuerte de San Cristóbal se encuentra en la parte más alta del cerro de San Cristóbal de esta hermosa ciudad de Gracias y es parte de la arquitectura institucional de uso militar del Estado hondureño.

La entrada se clasifica en L 50.00 para turista extranjero,  L 20.00 para turista nacional,  L 10.00 estudiantes y tercera Edad y L 5.00 locales.

El fuerte también puede ser reservado para uso instalaciones: Organizaciones de Base (Asociaciones) precio por día  L 500.00, ONG’s  y otros L 1,000.00 por día, eventos sociales y particulares L 1,500.00.
