The scientific novelty of the topic we have chosen is due to the fact that in Russian linguistics the Puerto Rican variant of the Spanish language has clearly not been studied enough. The existing very few studies do not convey a complete picture of the linguistic situation in Puerto Rico, there is an acute shortage of scientific papers on this topic. The processes taking place in the Puerto Rican variant of the Spanish language have not been the subject of any detailed consideration in Russian linguistics. The purpose of our study was to identify the phonetic, lexical and morphological features of the Puerto Rican language and their further description and classification. The goal set determined the specific objectives of the study. One of the most important tasks was to study the history of the country and the influence of various historical factors on the formation of the Puerto Rican variant of the Spanish language. Another significant task was to study the existing education system on the island and the impact of the country’s economic well-being on the level of Spanish language proficiency. We also tried to present the current state of the language system of the Puerto Rican variant and identify the main trends in the further development of the language. Since we wanted to obtain a result that would be as relevant as possible, we turned to the method of interviewing informants. Modern technologies allowed us to conduct a remote linguistic survey among the citizens of Puerto Rico, during which questions were asked about the relevance and prevalence of a particular phenomenon. It is necessary to note the willingness to cooperate and the interest of many survey participants, as well as good knowledge about their culture and a conscious interest in it. In this paper, we mainly rely on the research of American, Spanish and Puerto Rican scientists, in particular Amparo Morales, a member of the Puerto Rico Language Academy and teacher at the Universidad de Puerto Rico, and Navarro Thomas, a Spanish writer and linguist, specialist in phonetics and phonology. Various domestic works on the history and culture of Latin America and encyclopedic reference books on the countries of Latin America served as a theoretical basis for studying the history of the country. In the practical part of the work, we relied on the results of our survey, and also relied on existing research to identify general trends in the development of the language. Today, Latin American studies are a promising field of scientific activity. Puerto Rico is a country with an inexhaustible source of linguistic features that deserve detailed study. There has always been an interest in Latin America in our country, and in many cases our states have successfully cooperated. The development of international relations between Russia and the countries of Latin America is ongoing, which determines the relevance of studying Latin American history, culture and the language spoken in these countries.
We interviewed people of different ages, but the main audience consisted of people aged 27 to 40 with higher education. The survey involved residents mainly of large cities. We did not consider rural speech in this work. Participants answered such questions as, for example, what words or expressions they consider the most typical for their country, how often they use words borrowed from other languages in their speech, how consciously this happens, etc. (see Appendix). Also, various audio and video materials with the speech of native speakers were used as materials.
An important theoretical basis for this study was the fundamental work of G.V. Stepanov “On the problem of linguistic variation” (1979), as well as the work of N.M. Firsova, Spanish language in Latin America. Colombia. Ecuador. Puerto Rico” (2002), which is one of the few domestic works devoted to the lexical features of the Puerto Rican variant of the Spanish language. In this paper, a comparative analysis of the vocabulary of the countries indicated in the title is given and its classification is made.
