The Freely Associated State of Puerto Rico, or the Strange Hispanic United States: altr — LiveJournal

There are several strange territories within the United States whose status has not yet been definitively determined. As the States formed, there were many such territories – almost all the states with the exception of the initial thirteen went through the stages of all kinds of “unincorporated territories”, everything that comes to mind of cunning Anglo-Saxon lawyers. But gradually, one by one, they received the status of full states – although some had to fight for quite a long time for this, such as Hawaii, which became a state only in 1959 year. Since then, no new states have been added, and therefore such territories as Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and many others seem to be “suspended in the air.”

Puerto Rico is officially called a “freely associated state” or “commonwealth” (commonwealth). At the same time, the population of Puerto Rico has long exceeded the population of many real states. However, Puerto Rico itself also does not have a clear clarity about who it wants to be. There are debates going on – there are supporters of independence, supporters of joining the US as a state and supporters of the status quo. Puerto Ricans have all the rights of US citizens, except for the ability to choose the president and senators. Obama, when he was a presidential candidate, spoke in favor of giving Puerto Ricans the opportunity to finally determine their status through a referendum – but such a decision also needs the consent of the US Congress, and there is no support there. This question, however, is not particularly acute here – like Hawaii, Puerto Rico receives significant subsidies from the United States. In addition, due to its special status, Puerto Rico has created a particularly favorable treatment for pharmaceutical companies – therefore, most of the drugs made in the USA are made here. And of course there are many American tourists who help the local economy with their dollars. nine0003

On the streets of San Juan and throughout Puerto Rico, by the way, everyone speaks Spanish. This is the real Hispanic United States – probably in 20 years California and Texas will also become so (parts of New York have already turned into Puerto Rican colonies). However, the dollar is used as the currency, and the prices for everything are also very American – I immediately felt a blow to my wallet compared to Central America and Colombia. Yet, in terms of average income, Puerto Rico is poorer than even the poorest American state (Mississippi), although it is richer than any Latin American country. nine0003

This is what San Juan looks like from the air. Old San Juan is just this peninsula, almost an island in the center of the photo.

Old San Juan is a picturesque place. Everywhere you look, it’s like a postcard.

Cathedral:

Pay attention to who is sneaking in the foreground. There are countless of them and they certainly give the streets a special atmosphere!

The most thrill of course is that it is surrounded by water from almost all sides. On the western side – that is, from the side of the bay – there is such a promenade. nine0007

The main gate of the city is just on the western side. In colonial times, it was through these gates that all kinds of bumps entered the city.

The so-called Princess Boulevard:

In the northwest of the peninsula that forms Old San Juan, there is a huge old Spanish fortress. Here she is seen in the background.

It is separated from the city by green meadows:

This is a look back at the city.

Gate to the fortress:

A very impressive building:

San Juan was of great strategic importance in colonial times. The fact is that for ships that come from Europe or from Africa, Puerto Rico was the first large island on which they could replenish their food and water supplies. San Juan had an excellent deep natural harbor. Therefore, it was rightfully considered the key to the entire Caribbean region. For the Spaniards, the defense of San Juan was the highest priority, while for other colonial powers that tried to gain a foothold in the Caribbean, it was a tidbit. Various invaders tried many times to take it, and the closest were the Dutch, against whom only by a miracle the Spaniards managed to hold out. San Juan was never taken by anyone and the Spaniards lost it at the very end of the colonial era. nine0007

From the towers of the fortress, the strait and the ocean are controlled for many miles in all directions.

Inside the fortress:

Since we were in San Juan during Easter, we could not help but go to see the Catholic ceremonies on Sunday:

Our favorite cafe at the pier of cruise ships.
