Beautiful downtown of Gurabo
To people who aren’t familiar with the area, Gurabo can feel like an extension of Caguas, and historically that’s exactly what it was.
Gurabo, originally known as Burabo (Taíno word that means “fertile valley”), was a neighborhood of Caguas from the 1600s until 1815 when a coalition of 168 families got together and demanded to become their own municipality.
Currently, it’s one of the fastest growing towns in Puerto Rico: expanding from around 18,000 residents in the 1980s to over 45,000 residents today. Gurabo is located just 25 minutes from San Juan, in the outskirts of the expanding metro area, intersecting with the beginnings of the rural areas of the central mountain range.
The Stairs
Gurabo acquired the nickname “The town of the stairs” because of five staircases located in a neighborhood called El Cerro, which was built on the side of a very steep hill. The staircases are hard to miss since they’re 22 stories high, painted bright red with yellow banisters, and surrounded by houses painted in different, eye-catching colors. They allow residents to go up the hill more comfortably in order to reach their homes.
Carraízo Lake
Carraízo Lake is one of the most important reservoirs in Puerto Rico and is spread across the municipalities of Caguas, Trujillo Alto, and Gurabo. It’s a popular spot for kayaking and recreational fishing.

Ceviche on a white plate that’s plated with small flowers on its rim.
Surrounded by an impeccably maintained garden, this former hacienda was transformed into a gorgeous restaurant serving Caribbean and Mediterranean cuisine called Zafra del Caribe. Aside from the terrace and main dining room, which combine the rustic charm of the architecture with a more modern decor, there are elegant ballrooms for weddings, receptions, and private dinners.
The food is some of the best in the region, particularly their seafood dishes, including their traditional paella marinera, as well as their eclectic takes on Puerto Rican ingredients like the pigeon pea risotto or the chicken breast stuffed with yuca in a mushroom, spinach, and tomato sauce.
The Museum and Humanistic Studies Center Dr. Josefina Camacho de la Nuez is part of the Ana G. Méndez University Gurabo Campus and is open to the general public. The museum has several permanent collections of works on paper, folk art, archeology, history, sculpture, sculptural ceramics, and painting, with an outstanding collection of serigraphic posters of Puerto Rico. Their mission is to “collect, preserve, study and disseminate the artistic and humanistic expression of our regional and national Puerto Rican cultural heritage, for the benefit and enjoyment of the university community and the public of today and forever.” The museum is housed in a modern building overlooking the Loíza river.

I like Gurabo as a Puerto Rico municipality mainly because of the diversity found here. I first moved to this city when I was 6, and have slowly come to really enjoy living in it. Not only does it have plenty of secure and friendly neighborhoods, but it also hosts a small shopping center, multiple church’s if you’re interested, and a large variety of delicious restaurants. If you live in Gurabo, you know how willing the people around are to help with practically anything. Whether you’re lost and need to clarify directions, or are simply hungry and wanting to find a good place to eat at, ask around in Gurabo and you’ll get properly guided to the right place. Finally, an interesting side note I would like to add is how when driving through the streets in Gurabo, you’re certain to stumble upon people riding horses. I think this is pretty funny, and it represents a bit about Puerto Rican culture and traditions. There is always room for improvement at any place, so 4/5 stars from me!

We have lived in Gurabo almost all of our lives. Me and my sisters love it here. We have great neighbors and social lives. We like that gurabo is “rural”, because it has a lot of greenery and fresh air. The commute to the metro is a bit far, but it is worth it. Not only are the people great, but there are great malls here.
It’s a good place to live but for most of anything you have to go to a bigger city, either Caguas or San Juan.

Doña Amparo met us where we ate the night we arrived and personally guided us to her guest house.
Nestled in the mountain peaks around San Lorenzo, the location was quite and tranquil.
Doña Amparo was a most gracious host and made us feel really at home.
We were glad to see she is adding more rooms onto the house on the hillside and decided we will make her home our mountain escape from Florida.

The room met and exceeded my expectations. King bed was comfy, a lot of room space and a modern bathroom. First floor gym was a plus to get a quick workout. I only ate once at the hotel, I had the sautéed veggies and a Moscow Mule. Also, you have the casino right next door.

The staff was helpful. The place was good except for bed bugs the first night. The staff immediately sought to rectify the issue by moving us to a different room. There was no issue with the other room.
