Cons

This hotel has reopened following the impact of Hurricane Maria in September 2017. Travelers should note that the island wassignificantly impacted by the storm. The 23-room Hosteria Del Mar is a laid-back, mid-range boutique property with direct beach access located in the upscale residential enclave of Ocean Park. Guests have easy access to a one-mile stretch of golden sand that’s popular with locals and kite boarders. The low-slung property mixes artifacts from the owner’s travels to Morocco, Thailand, and the Mediterranean with casual, beach-inspired style. The property’s restaurant, bar, and lounge all face the ocean and some rooms also offer sea views from their balconies. Despite its stellar beachfront location, the 30-year-old property shows signs of aging and lacks the resort-style amenities found at larger hotels such as La Concha in Condado or the Courtyard by Marriott in Isla Verde.

An off-the-beaten-track beachfront boutique with the atmosphere of a casual, quirky retreat

This established 30-year-old property was once a private home
before becoming a hotel. Located in the quiet residential area of
Ocean Park, the mid-range Hosteria del Mar sits behind a white decorative concrete wall shaded
by a canopy of mature trees. The entrance immediately announces the hotel’s Zen-like
vibe — a narrow bridge crosses a stone-bottomed pool with a rain-shower waterfall; a bench invites guests to sit; and a carved Thai figurine hangs on the wall,
one of many items collected by the hotel’s owner during her travels. Inside, the small lobby is wrapped in shiny wood paneling.
An arrangement of rattan chairs and an intricately carved wooden bench topped
with tangerine cushions is set on a sea-grass rug. Azucena flowers (a strongly
fragrant flower popular in Puerto Rico) are arranged in a tall vase and an
ornate gold mirror masks the paneling and flooring that hints at the
building’s 1970s birth.

The lobby opens directly into the property’s restaurant, Uvva,
a breezy space with vaulted ceilings, white marble-topped tables, and dark wood
shutters tilted at open angles to reveal peeks of the aquamarine water of the sea. A curvy bamboo-fronted bar is decorated with
colorful glass lanterns from Morocco. The outdoor bar and terrace has a stretch of wooden deck
built around trees and is outfitted with silver tables and blue chairs set with simple vases of
flowers. The sounds of crashing waves and the breeze make the deck an enticing spot for lunch or cocktails. In the evenings, the hotel’s lounge, a tent-like space with a bar and
beachy furnishings covered in bright blue and green striped fabric, turns up a selection of relaxed music. Guests are drawn here for the laid-back, slightly unkempt, beachy vibe that allows visitors to mingle with locals and take leisurely walks on the beach.

Rooms

A selection of recently renovated rooms with beach-cottage style facing the ocean or the interior courtyard

This hotel features three categories of rooms distinguished
primarily by the view. The Interior rooms, located in the courtyard at the rear
of the property, are the smallest (161 square feet) and come equipped with
either one double or single bed. The hotel’s Ocean View rooms feature either
one king or two double beds and are much larger (323 square feet),
offering views of the sea from balconies and terraces. There’s also an apartment for longer stays.

The rooms underwent a recent renovation, upgrading the decor
to a casual, beach-inspired style. Some rooms offer king-size beds with tufted ivory headboards and matching slipper
chairs while other rooms are furnished with more traditional style wood
furnishings plus simple headboards and armoires and a color palette of taupe and sea-glass blue. Floors are finished in
terra-cotta tiles while the walls are white and hung with canvas
artwork that depicts beach scenes or wood-framed prints of flowers.

Flat-screen TVs are hidden in armoires or mounted on the walls, and minibars with soda, water, and wine are set on floral trays or stocked in mini-fridges.
The bathrooms have white-tiled single vanities and shower/tub combos lined
with decorative shower curtains in floral and striped patterns. The ocean-facing rooms have small terraces with a table and
two chairs, ideal perches for watching the waves and kite boarders.

INDIVIDUAL TRAVEL CLUB: Great waterfalls of the world

Tamarita from the Journey Between Two Oceans (2012)

See the beginning of the Brazilian part of the journey in the story Crossing from Bolivia (Puerto Quijarro) to Brazil (Corumba)

. .. A bus ticket from Campo Grande to Foz do Iguacu costs 104 reais, it takes 10 hours. got the last available seat. Brazil is a rather expensive country, along with Argentina and Chile, it is difficult to save here, and tickets do not differ in categories and prices. The price is one. All boarding gates are paid and a boarding ticket is bought at a separate ticket office, without it you will not be allowed to board the bus. nine0007

There are no mountains on the way to Foz do Iguaçu, sometimes jungles, sometimes clear glades, herds of white cows against the black-blue sky. Vast clear meadows in white flowers on soft hills. This is where the rain comes in.

I have finally arrived. Across the road is a hoster (as hostals are called in Brazil), I check in for $ 15, i.e. for 30 reais. I leave my things here and immediately go to another bus, a city bus for 2.75 reais, which transfers passengers at the local terminal to the next, free transport that goes to the waterfalls national park. I didn’t really understand the fuss with transfers to free buses, I didn’t catch the point. It seemed terribly inconvenient, and it happened more than once in different cities. nine0007

Entrance to the park costs 41 reais, and there again transport awaits. Beautiful painted buses – accordions are comfortable and half empty. Posters are hung everywhere – maps of the park, with its paths and viewing platforms, with the names of waterfalls and islands. Yes, a brochure is provided.

I took a picture on the bus, just in case, otherwise I don’t have any pictures of my own.

We drive for a long time, through a beautiful dense forest, into which paths go, apparently also routes. Decorated buses go towards, returning with tourists. And we also had a guide, who is attached to each flight, his services are included in the ticket price. nine0007

We stopped at the parking lot, and then on foot, after our guide. I just could not believe that now I would see the wonder of the world, to which I had been traveling for a long time, changing buses and fellow travelers. The noise of the waterfall was already clearly audible and we went to the edge of the canyon, the opposite side of which was completely covered with cascades of water, large and small.

They broke down from the sheer walls, bringing down their jets into a dense green forest. Where they quietly flowed to the bottom of the canyon into the fast Iguazu River. In its upper reaches, the river, spilling widely over the valley, smoothly comes to the corner of the canyon, where it begins its furiously raging dance. nine0007

Water in a mist of spray from three walls 70 meters high falls into one place called Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat). This ebullient water column is the main one to visit. Of course, the strength and power of nature makes those who see it for the first time tremble. But I really liked all the other waterfalls, their beauty conquers so much that once I see Iguazu, I’m just sure that I will never meet the like of him.

Powerful and fine jets are innumerable. The height of the highest cascade is 82 m.

Below, at the very bottom of the abyss, the river forms sandy beaches and islands, bright boats with people go along the river, swimming under the very jets and back.

And above, along the edge of the canyon, there are footpaths in a wooden fence separating from the abyss. You can walk for a long time, and waterfalls and fabulous cascades appear again and again in the crevices of the stone wall of the canyon.

Rainbows above us, below us and on the water. Sometimes whole water “draperies” go into the river in several steps, creating an unthinkable amount of tiny splashes that look like fog. nine0007

Viewing paths and platforms are laid right along the waterfall, passing visitors as close as possible to the beautiful breathtaking places. The river flowed literally from under our feet, and I saw how down there, sparkling with a rainbow, it painfully fell into the general stream. We were all wet from splashes flying from everywhere, the paths were made of a large thick lattice, and therefore they do not collect moisture and are not at all slippery.

The steps of the canyon, overgrown with greenery, created the impression that the water column goes into the forest, suddenly appearing from it a step lower. A boat to the waterfalls costs 200 rubles, which literally passes under the jets, and comes as close as possible to the Devil’s Throat, so that with outstretched hands, you can probably wash yourself with its waters. nine0007

Where the river flows smoothly and slowly, having made its next jump, blocks of stones cover its bottom and block the way. Stones – giants, overgrown with green moss, attract birds and butterflies that flutter brightly in this unearthly beauty. Rainbows do not go out here, and islands strewn with flowers do not fade.

Having taken the elevator up, I found myself on an observation balcony, which protrudes far above the raging waters. Walking on the slatted floor is not very convenient, the abyss is visible in the gaps under my feet, at the sight of which my hamstrings are shaking. nine0007

There is a small cafe where you can have a snack and a drink. But this must be done carefully, carefully looking around. Thick coats with striped long tails are terribly hooligans, stealing absolutely everything edible from gaping customers.

Ice cream was stolen from a boy from Germany as soon as he turned away to straighten his backpack. I shouted to the nose: “Stop! Stop!”, and ran after him, and he was like that. Their arrogance just rolls over, it is impossible to drive away, they immediately take on an aggressive grin, and yet they bite seriously. nine0007

They are afraid of employees who scare them away with a soft broom, but not for long. As soon as the broom has disappeared from view, the noses reappear, threatening us with their sharp teeth, demanding handouts. They climb into garbage cans that are attached to tree trunks, quickly pulling out all the contents from there to the floor, as soon as the striped tail sways above them.

They allow themselves to lie lazily under our feet and also move imposingly, not giving way to anyone. Holding their striped tails perpendicular to the floor like candles. They are not afraid of us, but we are of them! nine0007

The widest wall of waterfalls, 300 m, is located directly opposite the cafe with possums, and the greatest depth of the river is 15 m. At a distance of 11 km from here, it flows into the river. Parana, this place is called 3 borders and it is convenient to get there from Argentina. Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay are on three sides of the confluent rivers, and a beautiful island is right at the confluence.

Our guide is from Argentina but works in Brazil, told me all about the Argentine national park and tomorrow I will go there. After enjoying a magnificent show called Iguazu, she returned to her hotel in the same tricky way.
