Beaches – one of the main attractions of Alicante

The civilizations that lived on this part of the coast left their indelible mark, which can be seen in all corners. A rich heritage is just one part of all the charm that Alicante has to offer. Add to it natural beauties, a huge range of urban offers and services, as well as a wide variety of events. And, of course, let’s not leave aside the beaches – it is on them that the main emphasis is placed, and it is they that attract residents and guests.

Year after year, the beaches of Alicante are awarded the “Blue Flag”, a European distinction that indicates a high level of environmental conditions.

During the summer season, some beaches in Alicante (San Juan, Postiguet, Urbanova) are equipped with special areas for people with disabilities.

The beaches of Alicante are also suitable for lovers of water sports such as water skiing, jet skiing, yachting, sailing, diving, surfing, windsurfing and even fishing.

San Juan Beach

Magnificent sandy beach, which is more than 3 km long and over 100 m wide. Due to its location away from the city center and its size, it is ideal for both adults and children to relax. At your service – equipment for active leisure, water sports, playgrounds, restaurants, shopping pavilions. Among the basic infrastructure are rescue towers, a first-aid post, parking, showers and toilets.

Postiguet Beach

Comfortable sandy beach, located within the city, at the foot of Mount Benacantil, on top of which is the castle of Santa Barbara. The length of the beach is about 1 km, the width is 50 m. A paved promenade lined with palm trees stretches along the beach. Such a picturesque entourage attracts residents and guests who prefer to quietly sunbathe, read their favorite books or just relax.

The name of the beach comes from the Valencian word postigo meaning ‘non-main gate of the city’. According to legend, they were used by local fishermen.

Albufereta beach

Located northeast of the center of Alicante, between Serra Grossa and Tossal de Manises. Its length is about 400 m, and it is mainly chosen by lovers of water sports, as well as those who want to retire and take a break from the routine.

Almadraba and Cabo de Huertas beaches

If you like coves, then welcome to any located between the beaches of San Juan and Albufereta! In particular, Almadraba and Cabo de Huertas (which is Spanish for ‘Cape of the Valleys’) are ideal for those looking for a quietness that is not typical of city beaches. Their length is 750 m, width is only 6 m.

Urbanova Beach

Located near the center of Alicante, in the Urbanova residential area. An excellent option for swimming, sunbathing, sports, including water sports. The length of the beach is 1.6 km, the width is more than 50 m.

The Costa Blanca has long been a favorite beach holiday destination for both citizens of many European countries and the Spaniards themselves. However, in addition to the standard pastime on the seashore, interspersed with cultural and gastronomic programs, in every large settlement there are plenty of opportunities for water sports.

This, among other things, contributes to the warm favorable climate that occurs throughout the year in the area from Dénia to Pilar de Horadada. The water temperature here, even in the coldest month of the year (February), does not fall below 14ºC, not to mention the air, which sometimes warms up to 25ºC in winter. In July and August, the sea is the only salvation from the scorching heat, but at the same time it is conducive to combining business with pleasure.

A characteristic feature of the Costa Blanca is the almost complete absence of strong waves, so necessary for surfers, which can be seen here only during a storm. However, such conditions are ideal for beginners, and surf schools operate on the beaches of the cities of Alicante, Santa Pola and San Juan, as well as in Torrevieja, where they teach people with disabilities as well. Other activities on the water can be practiced both independently and with the help of numerous agencies that provide services of this kind and at the same time guarantee complete safety.

Windsurfing

Unlike strong waves, the winds on the Costa Blanca are not uncommon, so windsurfing (sailing on a light board) is possible on almost any open and long beach. There are several types of wind, typical for each part of the coast, time of day and season, the most “productive” of which lasts from May to September.

The main places for windsurfing on the Costa Blanca: Denia, Benissa, Moraira, Calpe, Altea, Alicante, Alfaz del Pi, Santa Pola, Torrevieja. The cost of studying in schools located in Denia, Calpe and Santa Pola starts from 30 euros for a group lesson for 4 people (from 50 euros – individually for any level).

Kitesurf

This relatively young and rather extreme water sport is moving along the waves on a board following a kite or a parachute. It is best to practice kitesurfing in spring and autumn – especially since during the summer holiday season, riding along the beaches is prohibited in order to avoid collisions with swimmers and riders on pedal boats or jet skis.

The main places for kitesurfing on the Costa Blanca are San Juan and Santa Pola (competitions are also held there), although it is better to learn on the Mar Menor, where there are no high and strong waves. The cost of one group lesson, designed for 3 hours, starts from 80 euros, an introductory briefing of the same duration will cost 65 euros.

Flyboarding

In terms of extremeness, flyboarding can compete with kitesurfing – flying over the sea on a special board set in motion by the reactive power of water flows. The height of the jumps can reach 12 meters; often they are accompanied by various spectacular tricks followed by diving into the water and quickly jumping out of it. It is believed that in order to master the flyboard, just a quarter of an hour is enough; the only requirement is to be over 16 years of age.

The main flyboarding spots on the Costa Blanca are Denia, Javea, Altea, Torrevieja and Benidorm (on Poniente Beach). The cost of one lesson/session starts from 60 euros.

Paddle Surf

The exact opposite of the above water sports is paddle surfing (or SUP surfing as it is also called), which came into vogue on the Costa Blanca in the middle of the last decade. For this method of active recreation on the water, there are no restrictions either on age or on the level of preparedness. From the outside, it may seem that there is nothing difficult in rowing with an oar while standing on a board sliding on the water surface, but in reality it is not.

You can practice paddle surfing on all beaches without exception, and sports schools located in the cities of Alicante, Altea, Denia, Calpe and Torrevieja offer a course at a cost of 20 euros per lesson.

Water skiing and wakeboarding

To improve many physical qualities and form in general, water skiing or boarding behind a motorboat in Calpe, Benissa and Moraira helps. An alternative to these places is the Cable Ski water park located at the end of the Levante beach in Benidorm.

Cable Ski is open from April to October inclusive, from 11:00 to 18:00. There are several rates based on time, number of attempts, age and goals, but for beginners there is a two-day course (1.5 hours each day) at a price of 35 to 52 euros. Usually it is quite enough to confidently stand on skis or a board and enjoy skiing.

Water motorcycles (jet skis)

For lovers of higher speeds and more thrills, a trip on jet skis will be a good entertainment. This can be done independently after a preliminary lesson or accompanied by an instructor. In the latter case, you can make an exciting trip from Benidorm or Torrevieja to the nearby islands.

In addition, you can ride jet skis and thus get your dose of adrenaline from June to September in Denia, Calpe, Altea and Alicante. A half-hour trip will cost an average of 75 euros.

Diving

The reputation of the best diving spots on the Costa Blanca is attached to the surroundings of Cape Peñón de Ifach in Calpe and the island of Tabarca, which have the status of biosphere reserves. The underwater flora and fauna here is very colorful and diverse, and it is easy to meet such representatives here as octopuses, rays, moray eels and cuttlefish.

Diving routes popular with beginners and experienced divers alike include the “Bath of Neptune” near the island of Portichol in Javea and the “Elephant Cave” in Altea, as well as excursions to the remains of an ancient Roman merchant ship located at a depth of 25 meters near Villajoyosa .
