  • Hello, just had a question about booking. my flight arrives in the BQN airport at 11:53pm on august 22 ,would I be checking in still on the 22? I’m sure by the time I collect the luggage and car rental it would be after 12am the next day, just a bit confused on which day to book.

You must reserve the day before so that you can check in at dawn and not conflict with any other reservation.

Returning to Apple, Steve Jobs changed the management structure of the company. This made Apple top 1 on the planet

Steve Jobs’ management philosophy remains an integral part of Apple’s DNA even 10 years after his death.

It was 1985, the CEO of Apple was its founder, Steve Jobs. In the grand living room of a charming house on Pebble Beach, California, the young and brash CEO was having a discussion with 11 employees. They argued bitterly, discussing important details of a new product they were developing. No one knew then that a debate like this would lay the foundation for the most valuable company in the world today.

After being forced out of Apple in 1985, Jobs founded a new startup called NeXT in less than a month. Most of the team was made up of former Apple employees. They had become accustomed to heated arguments during their time together on the Macintosh and followed their boss. The company was engaged in the development of graphic workstations and software for universities and businesses.

Eventually, after 10 years, NeXT was bought by Apple, and Jobs again took over as CEO of the company he founded. When he returned, he created a new corporate system and established the traditions that define Apple to this day. Their study has much to teach everyone who is in business today.

Merger

Steve Jobs after returning to Apple

When Jobs returned in 1997, Apple had the usual structure for a company of its size. General managers ran projects or departments, each with their own profit. And, like many large companies, these general managers often pitted against each other, pushing Apple into bankruptcy.

In an article for the Harvard Business Review, Joel Podolny and Morten Hansen, dean and faculty member at Apple University, respectively, describe how quickly Jobs changed everything. “Returning as CEO, and believing that the traditional management model stifled innovation, Jobs fired the managers of all divisions in one day. He put the entire company on a single balance sheet (financial statement), thereby uniting disparate departments into one company,” the authors of the book write.

In other words, Jobs single-handedly eradicated the disunity that was killing Apple and forced the entire company to work together as one.

It is noteworthy that Apple continues to work within this structure even now – despite the fact that the number of employees has increased from 8,000 to 147,000, and the company’s revenues have grown almost 40 times.

Today, CEO Tim Cook, like Steve Jobs before him, “occupies the only position in the company that combines the development, design, production, marketing and distribution of all major Apple products,” Podolny and Hansen explain. “Apart from the CEO, the company has no managers in the usual sense: the work of employees who control the entire process from product development to sales is evaluated in accordance with the income statement.”

Apple’s continued success has proven that this model is suitable for companies of all sizes. The main thing is to choose successful local leaders. But in order for it to work, such leaders must have three qualities:

    1. an expert in their specialty
    2. attention to detail
    3. willingness to participate in joint discussions

Let’s briefly analyze each of them and see, Why did Steve Jobs focus on this?

Expert potential

“Apple is not managed by managers, but by experts — experts,” write Podolny and Hansen. Many companies today make the mistake of hiring or promoting people with good organizational skills but no knowledge and/or experience in their field.

Apple had the same problem. “We have passed this stage. Then we thought: “Oh, since we are going to become a big company, then let’s hire professional managers,” Jobs said in an interview on 1984 years old. “But nothing came of it. Managers knew how to lead, but they did not know how to do anything. If you are a professional, then why do you need a leader who is not able to teach you anything?

According to Jobs, the best managers were those who never wanted to lead, but chose to do so because they had the most experience and were the best at managing their teams.

Knowledge and experience are also priorities at Apple today. “It is easier to teach a professional to lead than to make a manager a professional,” write the authors of the book. “Apple executives believe that talented people want to work in a development team with world-class professionals. It’s like joining a sports team where you can play with champions and learn from them.”

Attention to detail

Steve Jobs in the late 90s

At Apple, the manager is expected to know everything about the project, as this allows him to make more informed decisions. “Managers love to spin stories about executive presentations poking around in spreadsheet cells, lines of code, or test results,” Podolny and Hansen said.

But as Apple grew, it ran into problems. Top management could not remain immersed in the details of everything. During the day, they simply did not have enough time for this.

To address this issue, Apple is urging executives to “decide which activities require their total immersion.” Leaders remain fully immersed in the details of this realm. They can then delegate to other members of the it project team those tasks that are still important but have a lower priority.

This is doubly useful. First, if necessary, the leader can quickly access the details of the project. Secondly, by his own example, he teaches employees how to delegate, which will be useful to them in a higher position.

Collaborative discussions

Of course, a lot of experience and attention to detail are inherent in many professionals, which makes the third quality of a leader especially important, namely: the willingness to participate in collaborative discussions.

Jobs and his team did it 30 years ago, Apple executives continue to do it today. Some experts freely discuss others, the consequences of possible decisions and openly share opinions. And “because no single employee is responsible for a product or service on its own,” Podolny and Hansen explain, this type of “professional collaboration is critical.”

However, the keyword is joint. Remember, Apple’s goal is to eliminate silos and create a single, high-performing product team. To do this, leaders must collaborate, which is why Apple prefers to promote professionals who have already shown their team and partnership qualities.

“Leaders must hold sound opinions and defend them vigorously, but must also be willing to change them if the ideas of others are objectively better,” write Podolny and Hansen. They explain that the balance between the ability to be biased and unbiased depends on “a deep understanding of and dedication to the values and overall purpose of the company. ” You also need to strive to make decisions in accordance with these values and goals, no matter how difficult it is.

As a result, the authors explain, discussions arise in which participants are free to disagree, contradict each other, promote some and reject other ideas – to find the best solutions.

Accordingly, development and innovation bonuses are based on Apple’s overall performance as a company, rather than tied to the success of individual products. It’s like a startup with 100,000 employees that has become one of the most valuable companies in the world.

You can see how the value of Apple stock has changed since Jobs returned.

If you want your people to work together and not against each other, you can try taking a lesson from Steve Jobs. Find executives who will be experts in their field. Those who are attentive to details and open to discussions. It will be much easier for the company to evolve and respond to new challenges in the future. It was this management philosophy that helped Apple to become top 1 in its time.

how the world’s youngest billionaire Elizabeth Holmes ended up in the dock – TSN Exclusive – tsn.ua

In the United States, businesswoman Elizabeth Holmes, who was called “Steve Jobs in a skirt,” was in the dock in the United States. The entrepreneur promised mankind a device capable of diagnosing diseases only by a drop of blood from a finger.

Her company was valued at $9 billion before it was discovered that the technology didn’t work. What sentence threatens one of the most famous women in America – on September 9, the plot of TSN 19:30 says.

Through the crowd of journalists, Elizabeth Holmes has to literally wade through. America’s attention to her trial is understandable – this woman has been on TV screens and on the covers of fashion magazines for years – as the founder of a successful startup.

A student at one of the most prestigious universities in the country, Stanford University, dropped out to create a unique medical device. With only one drop of blood, he had to diagnose a wide range of diseases, in particular cancer and HIV.

Holmes liked to compare herself to Apple founder Steve Jobs. The same black turtleneck as his has become part of her image.

The businesswoman seemed sincere – frankly told that she was inspired to develop the device by the fear of donating blood from a vein and shared her personal reasons to engage in medical development.

“As a child, I spent every summer and holidays with my uncle – I remember how he loved crosswords, puzzles, tried to teach us how to play football, I remember how he loved the beach, and I remember how I loved him. Once he was diagnosed with skin cancer … “- recalled the American.

To design her device, Holmes even invited Apple employees. In the end, the image began to work for her – they believed in the project.

Photos of a woman with former US President Bill Clinton and the founder of one of the world’s largest online stores, Jack Ma, began to appear on the Web. Holmes subsequently presented her project to then US Vice President Joe Biden.

When her company began to receive money, Elizabeth Holmes for the first time decided on a serious lie – she told drugstore and supermarket chains that her invention was already used by the US army – although they were just getting to know him. At that time, the company received a new head – businessman Ramesh Balwani, and they began an affair with Elizabeth.

The truth comes out when the company’s chief technologist commits suicide. Holmes’ invention simply does not work, one drop of blood is not enough for such tests.
