Por las entrañas de la Cueva de Batman
Tal es la profusión de murciélagos que pueblan estas cuevas que aquí, en las profundidades del paraje natural más notorio de Puerto Rico, se decidió rodar el sonido de la película Batman Forever. Al parecer, no había ningún otro lugar en el mundo donde captar mejor los escalofriantes chillidos de estos mamíferos que logran que a muchos, sólo con presentirlos, se les erice la piel.
Pero no es sólo este dato el que hace de las Cavernas de Camuy un lugar especial. Emplazado en el interior de esta isla de carácter estadounidense y corazón latino, alejado de su rostro más reconocible (el del sol perpetuo y las playas exuberantes), este espacio oculto en las entrañas alberga uno de los sistemas subterráneos más grandes del planeta (parece ser que el tercero, aunque los expertos discrepan en la posición). Más de 17 kilómetros de cañones, galerías, valles, sumideros y cuevas, que conforman un paisaje completamente surrealista.
¿La culpa? La lluvia, que durante miles de años ha disuelto la piedra caliza en esta zona kárstica, y la erosión del río también llamado Camuy, que ha modelado, como un artista del Renacimiento, estas extrañas formaciones geológicas. Y es que en el Parque de las Cavernas de Camuy la diversión, entre otras cosas, consiste en descubrir de la mano de guías profesionales las alocadas figuras que dibujan las rocas: el perfil de un indio, la sonrisa de una bruja… y todo cuanto pueda ser susceptible de activar la imaginación.

Para acceder a estas fantásticas cavidades que brindan una divertida excursión en familia existen varias entradas. A una de ellas se accede en un pequeño trolley que conduce a la cueva denominada Clara, que consigue hipnotizar con su grandeza: una enorme sala repleta de estalactitas y estalagmitas, así como de imponentes columnas pétreas, que remite a la idea que tenemos de la prehistoria al tiempo que hace sentirnos pequeños ante la inmensidad.
No es más que el aperitivo a este mundo del centro de la tierra en el que, a lo largo de un par de horas, se sucederán las sorpresas. Como lo que se conoce como el Sumidero de los Tres Pueblos, que es una impresionante apertura en la tierra de más de 120 metros de profundidad. O la Cueva Espiral, abierta a la luz, donde se aprecian los reflejos de los hilos de agua atravesados por los rayos del sol. O la Fuente de la Juventud, un chorro de agua fresca y cristalina que baja desde lo alto de la montaña y con el que te puedes refrescar.

Durante el trayecto en grupos reducidos, se desgranan los rincones de estas cavernas, su explicación científica, los diferentes ecosistemas que se encuentran al paso. Y al final, en uno de los tramos más interesantes de la visita, se observa el propio río Camuy bajo la cueva, con su significación anexa al tratarse de uno de los cursos fluviales subterráneos más importantes del mundo.
El Parque de las Cavernas de Camuy, que ha sido recientemente designado como el Primer Encanto Natural de Puerto Rico, es visitado por más de 150.000 personas al año. La mayoría de ellas lo hacen para dar un paseo por sus profundidades, aunque otras muchas se animan también a aventuras como escalada, rappel, vía ferrata… Hay también quien completa la visita con el enorme radiotelescopio de Arecibo, que recogió la primera foto de un asteroide. Pero éstos son sólo aquellos que tienen vocación de científicos locos.

El Municipio de Camuy pide administrar el Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy
La administración municipal hizo la solicitud formal a la Junta de Supervisión Fiscal y al gobierno central. El área es administrada hoy día por el Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales.
El alcalde de Camuy, Gabriel Hernández, solicitó al gobierno central y a la Junta de Supervisión Fiscal(JSF) que le cedan el Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy con el fin de desarrollarlo a su máxima capacidad con la asistencia del sector privado mediante una alianza público-privada (APP).
La JSF refirió el pedido del alcalde al gobierno central, particularmente al Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales (DRNA) que administra el parque, y el alcalde tiene audiencia con la agencia el próximo 24 de agosto.
“Hice una comunicación a la Junta de Control sobre la administración de las cavernas donde nosotros estamos disponibles para administrar las mismas siempre y cuando podamos traer inversión privada para poder desarrollarla. Desde 1984 que existe (el parque) apenas el gobierno ha desarrollado un 20% o 25% del parque”, destacó el ejecutivo municipal en entrevista telefónica con El Nuevo Día.
“Es un parque que se puede convertir en uno que puede competir con cualquier parque temático a nivel mundial”, agregó.
Destacó que tras recibir respuesta de la JSF, diciéndole que no tenían la autorización para hacer el cambio que solicitaba, optó por escribirle al gobernador Pedro Pierluisi.
“El gobernador me contestó que recibió la comunicación y me citaron el 24 de agosto a una reunión con el secretario de Recursos Naturales, (Rafael Machargo Maldonado)”, apuntó Hernández.
El alcalde precisó que el municipio no cuenta con el dinero para mantener el Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy, que tiene 236 acres. Estimó que el parque necesitaría una inversión privada de $20 millones “para que sea competitivo”.
“El municipio no tiene la capacidad económica para sostener ese parque, pero podemos ser el eslabón con el sector privado. Sería con una APP tal y como funciona el aeropuerto (internacional Luis Muñoz Marín, de Carolina), que está mucho mejor de lo que estaba en manos del gobierno”, afirmó Hernández.
Dijo el parque propendería al desarrollo económico y la creación de empleos no solo de Camuy, sino también de pueblos cercanos como Lares, Hatillo y Arecibo.
Agregó que la APP no sería un modelo desconocido para el parque porque antes del azote del huracán María sus concesionarios eran administrados por entes privados.
“Lo que quiero que la gente vea es que si traemos inversión privada, vamos a tener un parque que puede competir con cualquier parque temático a nivel mundial”, insistió el alcalde.
Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy cerró operaciones tras el huracán María en septiembre del 2017 y reabrió sus puertas en marzo de este año aunque solo está abierta la Cueva Clara sin servicio energético.

Russian Lotus-Renault driver Vitaly Petrov took 10th place in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix.
Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull for the sixth time this season will go into the race from first place.
Qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix took place in Montreal on Saturday. Another already sixth pole position of the season was won by the Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel. Russian Vitaly Petrov showed only the 10th result.
The weekend in Montreal began on Friday with two sets of free practice sessions. In the course of the Grand Prix, weather forecasters predicted rain. However, neither in the first nor in the second practice, precipitation from the sky did not come. On the contrary, the racers were winding circles in fine weather. The main event of the first free races was the departure of the championship leader Vettel. Moreover, this did not happen anywhere, but at the exit from the last chicane. “Red Bull” of the German was marked in the famous “wall of champions”. The mechanics could not fix the car before the end of the races. As a result, Vettel was content with only 16th place.
Petrov didn’t go without problems either. Due to a malfunction of the accelerator pedal on his Lotus Renault, the Russian was forced to miss most of the practice. Appearing on the track, Petrov was able to demonstrate the 14th result. The best time in an hour and a half was shown by Nico Rosberg from Mercedes, the second was Fernando Alonso in a Ferrari, the third was Rosberg’s partner Michael Schumacher.
Mexican Sergio Perez, who had a severe accident at the Monaco Grand Prix, felt unwell after the first practice and decided to end his performance in Canada.
Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa took his place in the Sauber’s cockpit.
The second part of the free practice was interrupted twice by red flags. Their cars were broken by Kamui Kobayashi and Jerome D’Ambrosio. It is noteworthy that both accidents occurred in the same turn – the fourth. Alonso showed the best result in the second practice. Vettel chalked up the second time, and Felipe Massa closed the top three.
But the “Mercedes” that shone a little earlier settled down only on the 19th and 20th places. In the third practice, Vettel was the fastest, followed by Alonso and Rosberg. If the reigning world champion with the car after the accident was all right, then his partner Mark Weber’s car had problems. The mechanics during the races had to change KERS, which did not allow Mark to appear on the track. In the last seconds of the final training session, de la Rosa crashed the car. Petrov and in the second and third practice showed the eighth result.
In the meantime, Russian team leader John Booth of Marusya-Virgin announced that they will stop working on new car developments after the British Grand Prix and focus on car development for 2012.
By the start of qualifying, clouds in the Montreal sky wandered over the track, but there was still no rain. At the beginning of the first segment, Petrov held the best time, but then the table took on its usual form – the first Vettel, followed by the pilots of Ferrari and McLaren.
The main struggle unfolded for getting into Q2. By tradition, last year’s newcomers – “Lotus”, “Hispania” and “Marussia-Virgin” – were left out of work, and ended their performances in qualifying. But who will be the seventh loser of Q1, it was not clear until the last moment. As a result, it turned out to be Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari from Toro Rosso. Alonso finished on the first line of Q1, and D’Ambrosio did not meet 107% of the leader’s time and now may not be allowed to start the race. Petrov showed the seventh result.
The teams did not stay long in the pits at the start of the second segment and immediately went to the track.
Ferrari drivers left the pit lane later. And it was Massa who set the best time. Behind him are Vettel, Webber and Alonso. Four minutes before the end of the session, the first nine (only Nick Heidfeld, who was in 10th place, was winding circles) remained in the pits, believing that nothing threatened their positions. And so it turned out. No matter how hard Kobayashi, who attacked on the verge, Maldonado, Di Resta, Sutil, de la Rosa, Buemi and Barrichello tried, they failed to break into the top ten.
The drivers of Ferrari, Red Bull, Lotus-Renault, Mercedes and McLaren entered the final segment in full force.
The final segment promised to be an exciting spectacle, as only the strongest had to participate in it. But these hopes were not destined to come true. As in almost all previous qualifications, already on the very first fast lap, Vettel set a phenomenal time that others could not surpass. Alonso was close to this, but in the end he lost a little more than one-tenth to the German. Massa and Webber will leave the second row for the race. Petrov lost to Heidfeld for the second time this season, qualifying 10th, while Nick was ranked higher.
