El municipio de Jayuya fue fundado en 1911. Está ubicado en la región central de Puerto Rico y comprende 39 millas cuadradas. Hereda su nombre del Cacique Hayuya, rector del yucayeque, también llamado así. Jayuya significa lugar del guayo y queda en el centro montañoso de la Isla. Se le conoce igualmente como “, “Pueblo de los Tres Picachos” y sobre todo, como la “Capital Indígena de Puerto Rico”.
Capital indígena por excelencia, evoca el pasado de los taínos. Estos amerindios fueron los primeros habitantes de la región del Caribe a la cual llegaron procedentes de Sudamérica. Como recuerdo de su importante presencia quedan los numerosos petróglifos, que son piedras talladas por los taínos; fiel evidencia de sus creencias, su cultura y sus vocablos.
Jayuya se caracteriza por sus monumentos indígenas: La Piedra Escrita y La Piedra Tibes, ubicadas en el barrio Coabey; La Tumba del Indio en Jayuya-Pueblo, y el Mural Indígena del barrio Zamas, lugar donde se encuentra el petroglifo del Sol de Jayuya.
La Piedra Escrita ha sido objeto de varios estudios arqueológicos. En octubre de 1994, la Comisión de Educación y Cultura de la Cámara de Representantes de Puerto Rico, se trasladó a Jayuya donde realizaron vistas públicas encaminadas a declararla Monumento Nacional.
Un inmenso monolito interrumpe el flujo libre del El Rio Grande de Coabey, que es saliente y forma un piso natural. Contiene una de las colecciones más interesantes de petroglifos indígenas que se encuentran en Puerto Rico. Cuenta con un tablado que le sirve como medio para poder disfrutar del rio de La Piedra Escrita con mayor facilidad. Este tablado fue construido con la intención de atraer a los turistas y de embellecer el ambiente donde se localiza esta importante colección Puertorriqueña.
Jayuya se enorgullece de su herencia taina y lo manifiesta en sus múltiples monumentos y festividades al respecto. La Tumba del Indio Taino, el Monumento al Indio y el Festival al Cacique Hayuya son algunos ejemplos de esta tradición.
El Sol de Jayuya
El Sol de Jayuya es un petroglifo encontrado en el Mural Indígena de Zamas, ubicado en el barrio del mismo nombre, en la finca del agricultor Luis Reyes.
Cabe señalar que la palabra petroglifo significa “tallado en piedra”. Se cree que éste y muchos otros que se encuentran en dicho lugar, fueron tallados en bajo relieve por el indio taíno que habitó en Boriquén desde la época precolombina (o sea, antes de 1493).
El doctor Ricardo Alegría, destacado arqueólogo e historiador puertorriqueño, creía que, en conjunto, estos petroglifos constituyen el mural más completo de las Antillas.
No deja de ser probable que el Mural Tallado de Zamas, localizado en una enorme roca en la falda de Cerro Puntita, el pico más elevado de Puerto Rico, a una elevación de 4,398 pies sobre el nivel del mar, sea un altar erigido por nuestros indios a Yocahú Vagua Maorocotí y a sus otras deidades.
Los aficionados al estudio de nuestra historia y herencia indígena han dado nombre a los petroglifos con el fin de distinguir unos de otros.
El Sol de Jayuya fue denominado así por el Centro Cultural Jayuyano. Según el doctor Ricardo Alegría, quién visitó el Mural Tallado de Zamas junto a un grupo de líderes culturales jayuyanos en 1968, este petroglifo, hasta ahora no se repite en otro lugar de Puerto Rico. Fue por eso que el Centro Cultural adoptó este signo como su sello oficial y desde entonces viene empleándolo en todo material impreso que realiza, en su correspondencia, en los Festivales Nacionales Indígenas de Jayuya, etc.
