There really weren’t any bioluminescence. It was a nice paddle trip, but that’s it. They said it was due to the weather conditions, So I would definitely check and make sure the conditions are correct. the people were great, but with the main reason to see bioluminescence, it’s disappointing..

So the reviews are accurate- it is pitch black kayaking, you will bump into other kayakers, and possibly not see a good show of bio lights. That being said and we knew this ahead of time booking… my wife and I ended up having a blast!! 😂 the lights were still cool to see and we managed to paddle really well together.
A shrimp even jumped into her kayak and we couldn’t stop laughing. We had so much fun!!! The guides gave a really informative speech when we reached the bay and even showed us some stars and constellations which was really cool! All in all, i would recommend doing this tour if you get the chance just go in knowing the beginning statement. Lol

Guides were great! It was a little difficult to find the outfitter in the dark (Google maps did not do a great job) but once we got there, the kayaking was fun. Travelers should probably check in advance about luminescence—it was minimal for us, but a great introduction.

Learn before going and set your expectations accordingly

Set your expectations according to the weather and the status of the bioluminescent bay so you won’t get disappointed. It had rained for several days prior to our tour and the moon was not new moon so it was not dark which are the ideal condition to see the bioluminescent planks. We knew we wouldn’t be able to see much but still decidedly to do the adventure. It was fun kayaking at night and we were still able to see some of the bioluminescent light under a tarp. The guides were all friendly and did their best to show you good time.
I would love to go back and get the full experience when the conditions are better.

Well organized tour with the excellent luck of bright bioluminescence despite a rising full moon. Guides were knowledgeable and ensured our safety through the dark waters. If you are able, this is a must do, but be aware you need to be in relatively good physical condition to kayak this distance (about 2 miles). There are powered boat alternatives if you have physical limitations. Also be aware you WILL get wet, as will everything you bring with you. Protect what you bring in waterproof bags. Also: no point in bringing mobile phones, photos are not possible.
Recommend water shoes and dry shoes in your car for afterward! Warnings aside, this is a magical experience, and Kayak Puerto Rico is an excellent operator.

They are well organized and the staff is friendly and professional.
The tour includes time to paddle on your own once in the laguna which is cool but at night is tough to do and not get too far away from the group specially in a cloudy night.
This says that it’s suitable for beginners but it’s hard to paddle in the dark and to follow their directions to stay in a single file line or to get side by side when you can’t see and don’t know what you’re doing. It would be good for them to give beginners more time to practice and get comfortable before heading out.
There were a lot of fist timers in my group and that diminished my experience because they were slow or too erratic which made it hard to follow tour guide instructions.
Over all- it was really nice. Would love to do it again.

Kayaking through the mangrove forest in the dark to the bioluminescent bay was beautiful and thrilling. The sparkling effects in the water were so unique. Our guides were helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. The stars and planets were very visible in the bay and our tour leader pointed them out so we could clearly identify them.

We had an amazing trip! The luminescence was low due to cloudy and cooler than typical weather in the previous few days, but fear not, they provided a way for everyone to see the glow!
The guides were amazing, explained the ecosystem, and showed us constellations, stars, and a couple of planets!
*They also help you back in your kayak if you and your partner happen to take a swim.

Fun despite less than ideal conditions

There are three of us so I got put with someone I didn’t know. She was a lot of fun and we grew as a team. The visibilty was unfortunately not good for viewing the bio-lumininence, but the guides, led by Noel, made the experience well worth the trip. Although we were provided bug spray, i never felt a bite. All in all, a really fun evening and I would recommend to anyone looking for amN outdoor adventure.

Kayaking the Bio bay was a bit underwhelming. By the time we got to the bay/lagoon we’d already been kayaking in the bioluminescence for quite some time. Everyone had already noticed the water “glowing” as their paddles hit the water. Once we reached the bay they made everyone meet together and they did a whole production about why it was glowing. It was a bit cheesy and I think most people were annoyed that they hooked us all together for it. Kind of seemed like a waste of time and a pain as some people couldn’t get the hang of kayaking and we were all waiting on them.
We had a large group too and I heard several people complain about the size of it. It was cool to kayak in the dark and it’s an experience I can check off my list, but I wasn’t as “wowed” as I’d hoped to be.

Details: Allow us to guide you on a unique evening through the mangrove forest and glowing waters of the Bioluminescent Bay at Laguna Grande! Upon arriving at the Kayak Village there will be life jackets distributed and a kayaking 101 crash course! Then it’s time to hit the water for this once in a lifetime experience.
With safety as a top priority, guides will help to navigate through the mangrove channel and into Laguna Grande. The darker it gets and closer to the lagoon, the more you will be able to see the water glowing beneath you. Any object the comes into contact with the water will create a trail of bioluminescence that is one of nature’s wonders! After a gathering to discuss the history and biology of this magnificent eco system you will be able to enjoy on your own before paddling back through the mangrove channel to our launch point. As you depart the Kayak Village, there will be a serene feeling that is truly indescribable!
