The people of Alicante and the city are getting ready for one of the biggest annual holidays, Las Ogueras de San Juan . It’s a celebration of the arrival of summer with the San Juan bonfire. Thousands of people take to the streets to enjoy the spectacular performance of music, color and fireworks to enjoy this fire-themed celebration.

When is this holiday?

On the night of June 23rd, the shortest of the year, many cities in Spain celebrate the beginning of summer with a popular festival known as “Las Hogueras de San Juan”. It is a night full of fire, music, food and water when people gather on the beach and sit around fires to celebrate the night. nine0013

For several days, Alicante celebrates this great homage to fire, in which authentic but short-lived works of art play the main role: “bonfires” – huge figures made of cardboard and wood, which are burned on the night of San Juan. .

History

The origins of the event go back many centuries ago, when people ruled their lives according to the Sun, which for some time lost its strength, and therefore the days became shorter. Fearing to be left in the dark, they began to arrange festivities that bring light and warmth, and with it the arrival of the summer season. nine0003

At present, all coastal cities in Spain have similar celebration customs, but there are some peculiarities. In Valencia, clubs, associations and fallas are preparing a festival to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy a magical night. This holiday has many traditions, all of which are associated with superstition. One of them is that in order for wishes to come true, they must be written on paper and thrown into the fire. The ritual also says that seven jumping over the waves at midnight will guarantee good luck and health for a year – know that for this you need to jump over the waves in the opposite direction. The queen of the feast, known as Bellea del Foc (Beauty of the Fire), is chosen in May from candidates nominated by a committee in each district. The festivities officially begin with the lighting of huge bonfires with their ironic cardboard figures that fill the streets of Alicante with wit and good humor. On this day, barraques or large tents are also used as a public dance floor where fiesta lovers can taste typical figs and coca (a type of pastry made with tuna, onions and pine nuts). nine0003

Some of the highlights of the celebration include the performance of orchestras and committees with their respective “beauties” and their ladies-in-waiting in traditional dress; offering flowers to the patroness of the city, the Virgin of El Remedio on June 21 and 22; and the International Folklore Parade, a spectacular procession featuring dance groups from around the world.

In addition, every day at 14:00 from 19 to 24 June, pyrotechnic shows are organized in Plaza Los Luceros. It is recommended to wear earplugs to view these noisy masklets, given the rumble caused by dust and fireworks. nine0003

Finally, at midnight on June 24, comes the krema (burning), the climax of the holidays. After a spectacular fireworks display on a white palm tree, bonfires are lit throughout the city and blaze amid great fun, dancing and singing, and firefighters pour water on the merry people in the so-called bathhouse.

But the fiesta is not over yet. From June 25th to 29th, El Postiguet Beach hosts a fireworks competition, while the historic city center comes alive with a medieval market and a range of shows.
