THE BEST BREWERY AND BARS OF PUERTO RICO, THE NEW CRAFT BEER CAPITAL OF THE CARIBBEAN

The medal was once the king of beer in Puerto Rico. For decades, if you were craving a local cold, there were few options other than the ubiquitous (very, very, very light) beer .

Today, beer drinkers can enjoy a much wider variety of local beers thanks to an unprecedented boom in craft brewing. According to Rafael Marquez, a craft beer enthusiast from Hatillo who maintains an Instagram account, the island is seeing a rise in breweries. @RoadtoCraftBeer. And existing ones are expanding their distribution and offer a greater variety of styles and tastes.

Zalika Guillory Liman, Owner Khmel Tavern – San Juan’s Leading Craft Beer Bar, she says recently when she discovered that 19 of the bar’s 34 draft beers were PR-brewed. When I bought this bar two and a half years ago, I had a hard time keeping four locals.”

Both Liman and Marquez note that this trend is driven by demand. As Liman points out, people on the island are taking a cue from the U.S. craft beer market, which she says is at saturation point. There is much more room for growth in Puerto Rico. And beer drinkers here now want different styles of beer, which is forcing the island’s brewers to ramp up production and experiment more. As a result, they make better beer.

Echoing what we’ve heard from Caribbean creatives and business owners, Liman also says that Hurricanes Irma and Maria have caused a strange reset in the brewing industry. It was the energy that emanated from desolation. After the hurricanes, she said, there was a kind of entrepreneurial spirit on the island and a desire to invest more in what was happening on the island. I have found that my clients – locals and tourists – are drawn to local beer and support the local economy to help Puerto Rico recover.

Several new breweries have opened in the wake of the storm, including From the West in Mayagüez, on the west coast, which wows locals with its coconut-and-honey-flavored glass of Bucanera. Pure Life, Puerto Rico’s first female-run brewery in Cabo Rojo, is popular for its Hyggelig honey amber ale – so much so that they are ramping up production capacity from 10 to 1,343 gallons per month. The newest brewer on the block, Aviator’s Brewery, just opened in San Lorenzo in the east-central part of the island, is drawing attention with its Zapote-ton Witbier fruit.

Beer

We asked Liman, a certified cicerone, and Marquez, who runs craft beer workshops around the island, about their favorite Puerto Rican breweries. Here are their top picks:

Ocean Lab Brewing Co. , Green Island

One of the most popular craft beers on the island was born on the beach, according to its owners, just two years ago. (Ocean Lab, attached to the stylish Vivo Beach Club, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.) This brewery was the first in Puerto Rico to launch a draft ale, a real beer for beer lovers: unfiltered, lightly carbonated and re-fermented. The dry Boricask IPA has a deep rich flavor. According to Lyman, their composition tends to be easy to drink with really clean flavors. Ocean Lab currently produces 13 beers. The Double IPA Hop Diver is a popular favorite, and they use locally produced coffee beans to make their Baraka coffee stout. Try them on a brewery tour, one of the few offered on the island.

Zurc Brewery, Coamo

This brewery favors German and Belgian styles. I love that Juan Carlos, the brewer at Zurc, is oblivious to beer trends. “He just does what he likes,” Liman says, highlighting his Kolonia kölsch, the first of its kind on the island, as his favorite drink. Marquez names La Kabra Maya Maybock Lager as a winner. Zurc recently partnered with California-based Stone Brewing Co. to release Ráfaga IPL, an Indian pale beer; This is the first time an island brewery has partnered with a major mainland brewer.

Boxlab in Del Barril, Aguadilla

Last year, two popular craft brands teamed up to create a powerful brewery and one of the best breweries on Puerto Rico’s west coast. According to Lyman, they are really expanding and constantly improving their quality. Marquez recommends Belgian Sol Invicto Pale Ale; Cocotero, a toasted coconut milk stout, is the perfect fairing for beach breezes.

Rebl, Utuado

Liman is a fan of this Cassava IPA brewery, which for a while was the only beer they produced. Their radical experimental brewing lab is now garnering attention with their Hogaza beer, made with bread from local bakeries. In an effort to reduce food waste, brewers toast leftover bread and add it to barley to make what they call liquid bread.

Señorial Brewing Co. , Ponce

Ponce’s first brewery, founded in 2013, produces El Polvorín, a smoked beer that both Liman and Marquez are crazy about. “It’s smoky and lovely, and it sells like crazy even when it’s hot outside,” Liman says of the hearty drink. Señorial is also known for its sour beer made from kenepas, a spicy local fruit.

Dragon Stone Abbey Brewery, Caguas

Specializing in experimental Belgian ales, Dragon Stone strives to be as close to a real Belgian brewery as possible. Marquez considers the Ghost Sour Project sour ale a must and their Belgian strong golden ale La Prémiere a favorite.

Anchovy Brewing Co ., Cabo Rojo

Boquerón is one of the island’s veteran small-batch breweries that stands out for its freshness. Crash Boat IPA is a widespread way to please the public; Marquez especially likes Gripiñas Coffee Porter.

Bars

The Puerto Rico Beer Guide website has maps of breweries and brasseries. Here are our favorite places on the island to enjoy local beer:

Hop Tavern, Old San Juan

This cool Old San Juan brasserie always has 50 beers on tap and another 150 bottles or cans. It’s a great stop for beer lovers, whether you’re relaxing after a stroll through the historic cobbled streets or having a pre-dinner drink.

Boricua Tavern , Hato Rei

This business district favorite features a lush backyard garden, live music and a 300-brew beer list.

Tap, San Juan

46 taps flow at this location on trendy Loisa Street. Beer dinners and meetings with brewers are especially popular with locals.

Dylan’s Beer Garden, Atillo

With over 200 beers, Dylan’s really has something for everyone – and it’s a great place to watch a football match.

Nearby, Arecibo

Al Lado is a new hotspot on the north coast with 20 beers on tap. Hipsters love the relaxed atmosphere here.

Rincon Beer Co. , Rincón

Here the surf server rests its stomach against the bar or spends the evening at sidewalk tables telling tales of catching delicious waves. Look at the chalkboard for popular local offerings (beer is also brewed on the premises).

Rock & Go , Cabo Rojo

Offering over 100 styles of beer (bottled, canned and draft, with over 30 local offerings), this beer and burger establishment has won quite a following.
