About La Placita de Santurce

Santurce is a neighborhood, or known locally as barrio, in the Puerto Rican municipality of San Juan. Located a few minutes from the historic Old San Juan, this exciting and creative neighborhood is a hotbed for the arts and culture. This is because some years ago, artists started moving into the area, where rundown buildings were rented out cheaply. Today, Santurce has become one of Puerto Rico’s most vibrant locations and a popular tourist destination.

Although there are many points of interest in the Santurce neighborhood, perhaps its most noteworthy attraction is La Placita de Santurce, or colloquially known as La Placita. Found across Baldorioty de Castro Highway, this unique marketplace has been the center of activity in both the neighborhood of Santurce and in all of San Juan. During the day, the area is teeming with vendors that sell fresh produce such as meat, fruits, vegetables, and more. In the evening, however, the community comes to life as restaurants and bars start to open. Dining staples and local kiosks are abundant, serving some local delicacies such as alcapurrias, empanadillas, and bacalaitos. Locals and tourists alike also flock to La Placita to socialize, have a few drinks, listen to live music and dance some salsa or merengue. To this day, La Placita is the hottest spot in town for nightlife and partying,

Fun fact: The iconic La Placita was founded over a century ago, in 1910, and is open 24 hours a day.

Arriving in the city of Narva

Then the path leads to St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia, with a population of about 5.4 million people. The city is located in the north-west of the country, on the coast of the Gulf of Finland and at the mouth of the Neva River. St. Petersburg is a city of federal significance, the administrative center of the Northwestern Federal District and the Leningrad Region. Today the city is one of the most beautiful cities not only in Russia, but also in the world, and it is often called the “Venice of the North”. nine0003

It’s hard to believe that once upon a time there were swamps on the site of St. Petersburg. The city was founded on May 16, 1703 by the Russian Tsar Peter I, when, after the victory over the Swedes, he decided to lay the Peter and Paul Fortress on Hare Island. The very first name of the city is St. Peter-Burch. It immortalizes the name of the king and the apostle Peter. In 1712, the Governing Senate moved to St. Petersburg and the city became the capital of the Russian state.

World War I greatly influenced the fate of St. Petersburg. On August 19For 14 years, on the wave of anti-German sentiment, by decree of Nicholas II, the city was renamed Petrograd. On November 7, 1917, during the October Socialist Revolution, power in the city passed into the hands of the Bolsheviks and the Russian Soviet Republic was created with its capital in Petrograd. During the civil war, due to the proximity of the front to the German army, the government of V. I. Lenin moved to Moscow, and on March 5, 1918, the city lost its capital status. On January 26, 1924, after the death of V. I. Lenin, the II All-Union Congress of Soviets of the USSR granted the request of the Petrosoviet and renamed Petrograd to Leningrad by its resolution. nine0003

The heroism and steadfastness of the people of Leningrad were manifested during the Great Patriotic War in 1941-1944. On September 8, 1941, the enemy reached Lake Ladoga, captured Shlisselburg, taking control of the source of the Neva, and blocked Leningrad from land. This day is considered to be the beginning of the blockade of the city by the troops of Nazi Germany from the south and Finland from the north. For almost 900 days and nights, under conditions of a complete blockade, the inhabitants not only held the city, but also rendered great assistance to the front. According to various sources, from 600 thousand to 1. 5 million people died during the years of the blockade. January 18 19For 43 years, the blockade ring was broken, but only on January 27, 1944, the blockade was completely lifted. After its removal, only 560 thousand inhabitants remained in Leningrad. May 1, 1945 Leningrad was declared a hero city. Immediately after the Great Patriotic War, the restoration of the city began. In September 1945, the academic year began and the concert season opened in the Great Hall of the Philharmonic.

In 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the city changed its name again. The inhabitants decided that it should be called as Peter I wanted – St. Petersburg. We know him by this name today. St. Petersburg is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a city in which the entire historical center is taken under patronage. nine0003
