Pineapple and coconut are two very popular fruits where I am from. In fact, we had palm trees in our yard growing up! Whenever we were craving a coconut, I just had to ask my dad to cut one down and in a matter of minutes, we could be drinking the delicious coconut water.
Pineapples weren’t quite as readily available, but there was a place about 3 hours from my house where they were grown in very large quantities. On a couple of occasions, I was able to go there and watch how they harvested them. Pineapple is grown in large fields since they need a lot of space to grow. I always remember that the workers had to wear heavy-duty gloves to protect their hands.
With all of that said, we were able to get both fruits at very good prices in my city. That is why we often would accompany our meals with fresh fruit juice. One of my favorite beverages to drink growing up was a virgin piña colada, which we called “piñadas” in Spanish.
A few months ago my husband and I had the opportunity to travel to Cancun to celebrate our anniversary. We had a great time and were able to visit Xcaret park, which was amazing. We also were able to enjoy tons of authentic Mexican food. My husband absolutely fell in love with virgin pina coladas on this trip and had it with every meal pretty much! Ever since we got back, he has still been asking for it.

We love this virgin piña colada recipe. It is creamy and refreshing and ideal for those of us that do not drink alcohol. That means that we can also share it with our kids, and of course, they love it too. We understand everyone has different ideas though, and many people like to make this using rum, which is the alcohol that is used in the original version.
What is the difference between a virgin piña colada and a traditional piña colada
For either version, you will only need five essential ingredients. Four of those ingredients are used in both versions, and they are:
- Pineapple chunks
- Coconut Cream
- Pineapple Juice
- Ice
The difference is in the final ingredients. For the traditional version, you will add rum. There are different flavors, such as coconut, pineapple, and orange rum which can be popular here.
For the virgin piña colada, you replace the rum with sugar or with sweetened condensed milk. This gives it a more sweet flavor than the traditional version, and we love it!
How do you make a virgin Piña Colada?
There are two simple methods for making a Piña Colada, whether virgin or traditional. The method you choose will determine the consistency of the final product.
The first method is to add all of the ingredients to a blender, in which case the final product has the consistency of a very smooth shaved ice.
The second method just combines the ingredients in a chilled cocktail shaker. This will result in a smooth flavor without the icy consistency.
This drink is perfect for any celebration or event. With Valentine’s Day coming up, this may be a great idea to add to your menu and I can guarantee it will be a pleasant surprise for the person you share it with!

BA’s Best Piña Colada Recipe
Forget hurricane glasses overflowing with a sticky-sweet concoction of sugary mixers and subpar booze. This frozen piña colada recipe is more dignified—but no less fun. When made with care, the preeminent summer drink balances sweetness and tang, has a creamy coconut edge, and packs a punch.
You’ll need a blender to achieve this rum cocktail’s coveted slushie-like texture. You’ll need a good amount of freezer room, so clear some space on an easy-to-access shelf before you get started. Using fresh pineapple slices will add extra brightness to the drink; if you can’t find a good one, an 8-oz. bag of frozen pineapple chunks will work. This version owes its richness to both cream of coconut and coconut milk, which get blitzed along with the other piña colada ingredients. Freeze the mixture (yes, in its blender cup!), then blitz again to reach a creamy consistency that can’t be beat—no giant machine with a twisting arm required. No matter where (or when) you’re serving this frozen cocktail, a little umbrella is a nice finishing touch.
If you’re short on time or freezer space but still hoping for a tropical drink at home, this bird of paradise cocktail recipe with rum, pineapple juice, and Aperol comes together quickly, as does a mai tai or a mojito.

Ingredients
Makes 4 Servings
½
fresh pineapple, peeled, cut into 1½” pieces
6
oz. sweetened cream of coconut (preferably Coco López)
2
oz. unsweetened coconut milk
8
oz. white rum
2
Tbsp. fresh lime juice
2
oz. dark rum (optional)
Maraschino cherries and lime wedges (for serving)
Preparation
Step 1
Place pineapple pieces in a resealable plastic bag, laying them flat. Freeze until solid, at least 3 hours.
Step 2
Shake cream of coconut and coconut milk in their cans before measuring. Purée pineapple, cream of coconut, coconut milk, white rum, lime juice, and 3 cups ice (about 15 oz. ) in a blender until smooth. Transfer blender cup to freezer and freeze until mixture is thickened (it should be the consistency of a milkshake), 25–35 minutes.
Step 3
Blend again until mixture is the perfect slushy frozen drink consistency. Divide among glasses. Top off each with ½ oz. dark rum, if using, and garnish each with a cherry and lime wedge.
Do Ahead: Pineapple can be chopped 3 months ahead. Keep frozen.

This was good. If you don’t have room in your freezer for the blender, I transferred the blender mixture to a ziploc freezer bag and then back to the blender, and it worked perfectly. The review below notes it was 68 on this date in Illinois. For me in a city near Los Angeles it was 111.

It is now September 5 and it is a high of 68 degrees, other than that the Pina’s are great. We followed the recipe as written and it came out very close to those we have enjoyed in Aruba and all over the Caribbean. Enjoy and thanks

Very good, but here’s a shortcut: use Hagan Daz pineapple coconut ice cream in addition to or in lieu of the coco lopez……there’s your creaminess!!!!!
As is the case with all bon appétit “best“ recipes, this piña colada suggestion did not disappoint.
I wish to share one caveat, however. When one freezes a whole prepared (peeled and cored) pineapple, instead of the suggested cubed pineapple, one WILL require a Milwaukee Hackzall to reduce said whole prepared pineapple to appropriate portions such that they are amenable to processing in a Vitamix.
Please do consider enjoying this excellently curated recipe with Old Lahaina light and dark rum.

As a former bartender I don’t put lime in mine but I do put a float of Kahlua. I also enjoy serving them shaken and not frozen. Otherwise this is a pretty standard recipe 🙂

I just made this and it’s too rum forward. I’m not a lightweight either. Most of the taste is rum. I also wish it was a bit more forward in creaminess. I’ve been searching for a pina colada that tastes like the one I had in the Bahamas, but alas this is not it. HOWEVER, the consistency is fantastic. So freezing after blending and then blending again is definitely the way to go.

Waaaay too strong, if you want to make this use half the amount of rum. We’re going to dilute it.

This was my first time ever making Pina Coladas and this recipe has made me love them forever! It has a strong kick of sweet, a hint of sour from the lime and then it reminds you there is alcohol in it. A beautiful yet powerful blend. To save myself time I bought a bag of pre-frozen pineapples and used 8 ounces of it. I would also say keep it in the freezer for 45 – 50 mins instead. The longer the better for that perfect smoothie texture that keeps the cherries from sinking straight to the bottom. For extra sweetness, you can drizzle some of the cherry syrup on the top for a nice aesthetic touch. 🙂

Made these pina coladas last night for the first time and I will never go back to pre-mixed crap again. These have the best flavor and are the most authentic I’ve ever had. Excellent recipe and as someone who has a problem with sugar, I loved that unsweetened coconut cream and coconut milk was used. There is enough natural sugar from the pineapple. Excellent!

Piña colada (Spanish: Piña colada)
literally translated from Spanish as “filtered pineapple” (or strained pineapple). This is a traditional Caribbean alcoholic cocktail based on pineapple juice, rum and coconut milk (or cream instead of coconut milk).
Pina colada cooks very quickly and
It’s simple, made from fairly affordable ingredients and it turns out very tasty! nine0136 The cocktail perfectly quenches thirst and gives freshness and coolness on a hot summer day!
Cocktail can be prepared both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. For a non-alcoholic option, simply leave out the rum.
Non-alcoholic version can be safely consumed by adults driving and
give to children. The main rule is to serve the cocktail chilled!
At home, Pina colada is made exclusively from freshly squeezed pineapple. But we do not grow pineapples, so a cocktail can be easily and quickly prepared from packaged pineapple juice. The main thing is to choose a good and tasty juice, and the cocktail will taste great! nine0136 Well, let’s cook!?
Ingredients
pineapple for serving | 1 piece (or pineapple juice 100 ml) |
---|---|
coconut milk | 30 ml |
white rum | 20 ml |
dark rum | 10 ml |
sugar syrup (to taste) | 10-20 ml |
crushed ice | |
sugar | 70 g |
water | 60 g |

Prepare ingredients.
Coconut milk. Classic Pina Colada uses coconut milk. It is often replaced with Malibu coconut liqueur or coconut syrup (in the case of coconut syrup, sugar syrup is no longer added). As soon as you open a jar of coconut milk, you can often see a thick mass gathered on top and a whitish liquid below. Thick coconut cream collects on the surface, and coconut milk on the bottom. Milk should be mixed well with cream and already measured in this form for a cocktail. nine0003
Rom. When preparing a cocktail for the first time, it is better not to add a little rum, and if the strength is not enough, rum can be added. Also note that the cocktail is recommended to be consumed very chilled – the temperature of the drink greatly affects its taste.
By the way, “Pina Colada” is one of the few cocktails that can be prepared without alcohol – and this will not make it less tasty (accordingly, we simply exclude rum from the ingredients).
Sugar syrup. nine0456 It is better to add sugar syrup to the cocktail, not sugar, because. the sugar won’t dissolve. Preparing sugar syrup is very simple: 100 g of sugar + 90 g of water – stir in a saucepan, put on low heat and bring to a boil and dissolve the sugar. As a rule, as soon as the syrup begins to boil, the sugar has already dissolved. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the syrup cool. I give the proportions of the syrup with a margin, not for one serving, and you can store it in the refrigerator for a couple of days or a week under the lid;)
Add sugar syrup to a cocktail to taste. And the taste will depend on the ingredients used, including the sweetness of the pineapple juice. nine0136 Sometimes, to adjust the acid-sweetness of a cocktail, a little lime juice is added to it – again, to your taste.
Pineapple and pineapple juice. If you plan to serve Pina Colada original, in pineapple, take 1 large pineapple or 3-4 mini pineapples (3-4 pieces of small pineapples will be equivalent to 1 large pineapple in terms of pulp and juice). From pineapples, you need to carefully cut the pulp and grind it in a juicer or blender. If you grind the pulp in a blender, you will need to strain the pineapple through a sieve or gauze and squeeze out the juice – this is if there is no juicer. nine0136 One mini pineapple holds just under 1 serving of a cocktail, and a large pineapple holds about 2-2.5 servings of a Pina Colada shake.
For a cocktail, you can use freshly squeezed pineapple juice, or take part of freshly squeezed juice and part of a good store-bought juice (or just store-bought). This option turns out to be no worse. Just find a good, tasty packaged pineapple juice. Accordingly, do not take cheap juices or nectars (choose an expensive one from those available) – a cocktail with it will turn out excellent. nine0003
PREPARING A COCKTAIL.
Wash the pineapple and drain the liquid (maybe blot dry with paper towels).
Cut the top off the pineapple.
Using a spoon or pineapple slicer, carefully scoop out the pineapple flesh (cut the stalk out of the pulp and discard).
