The picturesque municipality of San Miguel de Salinas, with a wonderful climate and cozy houses, is located in the south of the province of Alicante, on the territory of the Vega Baja del Segura region, adjacent to the region of Murcia.
The town has 6553 inhabitants (INE 2021), among which 3269 women and 3284 men – an almost perfect ratio! By the way, more than half of the population here are foreigners, so the communication environment is quite multicultural and friendly.
In addition to a healthy climate, beautiful houses and developed urban infrastructure, San Miguel de Salinas has a very advantageous location. The thing is that it is located between the cities of Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada, occupying the most elevated position in the area.
Thanks to this, it is very convenient to contemplate the diversity of the surroundings from here: the blue sea, green hills and plains, and also the salt marsh field.
From Alicante, it can be reached via the A-7 and AP-7 motorways linked to the CV-940 and CV-941. Regional roads connect this municipality with Orihuela, passing through Bigastro, Torrevieja and the villages of Vega del Segura.
History of San Miguel de Salinas
The first inhabitants of modern San Miguel de Salinas appeared here as early as 1599, when wealthy owners of finca (estate estates) began to massively build houses for themselves on the site of today’s city center, intended for permanent residence. Favorable and healthy climatic conditions, convenient proximity to other cities greatly contributed to this trend.
The first religious building (skete) in this new settlement was erected almost simultaneously with the construction of residential buildings – in 1600, but after almost ninety years it had to be demolished, presumably due to dilapidated condition.
Since in those days every self-respecting municipality had to acquire its own church for the convenience of parishioners, the new church, which still stands here today, did not take long and was rebuilt by 1719.
In 1723, at the request of local residents, the hermitage of San Miguel, belonging to the church of Iglesia del Salvador de Orihuela, was decided to be separated from it, turning it into an independent urban parish with its own priest.
On this, the inhabitants of the city decided not to stop and in 1813 they requested and received from Murcia, whose jurisdiction included Orihuela and San Miguel, segregation or, in other words, the separation of their settlement from Orihuela, and at the same time acquired their own independent City Council – Ayuntamiento Propio.
True, only two years later, in 1815, the old regime returned, and the independent city of San Miguel disappeared, again falling under the rule of Orihuela: and so on until the liberal triennium. In 1820, segregation was again granted to the city, but this time without municipal status.
In 1822, San Miguel managed to regain its municipal positions, but the “swing” continued: in 1823, with the establishment of the power of King Ferdinand VII, an absolutist regime was proclaimed in Spain, and the Constitutional City Councils – Ayuntamiento were abolished. As a result, San Miguel de Salinas once again lost its independent and proud status and once again became part of the municipality of Orihuela.
By that time, the population already numbered about two thousand inhabitants throughout the territory of San Miguel, of which 1646 inhabitants lived in the city center. Then it was a significant number for this small settlement, since until the onset of the 20th century it practically did not grow, or even decreased due to natural disasters.
In 1829, a strong earthquake almost completely plunged San Miguel de Salinas into ruins. The restoration and reconstruction of the destroyed buildings of the city was not quick, but nevertheless gradually carried out, largely thanks to the patronage of the Bishop of Orihuela – Felix Herrero Valverde.
In 1836, when Vega Baja del Segura came under the influence of the City Council of Alicante, the new, now definitive, City Council of San Miguel de Salinas was created at the same time. True, this immediately marked the beginning of endless disputes with the neighboring cities of Orihuela, Almoradi and Torrevieja over the boundaries of the new municipal area.
This went on for more than a hundred years, until finally, in 1955, Mayor Joaquín Martínez Pérez finally resolved this issue by clearly fixing the boundaries of San Miguel de Salinas.
In 1848, in the geographical dictionary of Pascual Madoz, one could find information about the city of San Miguel de Salinas, where it was described as a municipality of the province of Alicante, with a city council, with a judicial body and belonging to the diocese of Orihuela. As for the location of the city, San Miguel de Salinas was reported to be on a hill in the countryside, west of the salt marshes of Torrevieja. The city at that time had eight streets, two squares, a town hall and two schools. The population was 205 townspeople, owning 994 souls.
In 1840 in San Miguel de Salinas, the construction of a temporary prison began, as well as the Town Hall, since previously the mayor and municipal councilors had to hold their meetings in any village house suitable for this. This City Hall worked until January 3, 1988, and then a new one was opened in the city.
In the 20th century, the town began to attract more and more tourists: cozy and compact, with good infrastructure, affordable prices for resort housing, today it has more than 6.5 thousand inhabitants.

The urban infrastructure of the city includes a school, a clinic, a Masymas supermarket, a meat and fruit and vegetable shop, a large football field and a whole host of bars, cafes and restaurants. Just eight kilometers from the city there is an excellent golf club Las Colinas Golf & Country Club.
