Geography

The county is crossed by Segura.

Vega Baja has three distinct areas:

  • central zone, huerta Segura: flat and fertile, intended for irrigated agriculture with a dense but dispersed population;
  • the hinterland is more mountainous, with large farms and sparsely populated;
  • coast dedicated to tourism.

Despite low rainfall (Orihuela, 291 mm ; Torrevieja, 243 mm ), it historically suffered from the floods of the Segura River (1651, 1879, 1946, 1948, 1973, 1987, 1989). In 1987, 20,000 hectares were flooded, which was the reason for carrying out defense work against the Segura River by increasing the river’s capacity, which increased from 120 m 3 / s at certain points up to a minimum of 250 m 3 / s.

La Vega Baja, accustomed to emigration to the provincial capital, has become the province’s most dynamic area in recent years thanks to the development of irrigated land and tourism; in 2005 it had a population of 325,276.
