Overall visit is about an hour. Lots of construction going on right now. There were three modern art exhibits and two historical/cultural exhibits. Doesn’t give you a ton of information on PR or act as a primer for El Morro next to it so check this place out if you’re more interested in art. The exhibit showing the Tainos was predominantly in Spanish with a few small placards in English so keep the in mind.

Really wonderful museum

Oct 2021

This wonderful gem of a museum is a must-see while in San Juan. Located on the second floor of the former Spanish army barracks, this museum holds a fascinating variety of indigenous, African, European, historical, and contemporary exhibits highlighting Puerto Rico’s richly diverse identities. This museum was quiet compared to the other nearby attractions, as I think it’s a bit lesser known, but no less informative and fascinating for it. I enjoyed soaking in the various exhibits in a calmer setting, and I learn a lot every time I come here.

must-visit in Old San Juan

Apr 2022

The main attractions of Old San Juan are beautiful but have a complex history, and the Museo de Las Americas provides a perfect context through which to understand the city and culture that makes it a must-see.

In addition to powerful explanations of indigenous, African, Spanish, and contemporary Puerto Rican cultures, the museum doesn’t shy away from provocative folk art, ancient artifacts that might have been censored elsewhere (i.e. indigenous erotic sculpture), and bold contemporary art installations that play off of each other in interesting and unexpected ways.

Finally, the museum is affordable, spacious, uncrowded, and in an interesting building; perfect to take a break from the heat in the middle of the heat. All in all, this was a surprise favorite attraction in OSJ.

Excellent art exhibits

Feb 2022

The setting (an old army barracks, believe it or not) is architecturally beautiful. The art exhibits on the second floor are uniformly wonderful – great explanatory materials, great art and some really nice historical display rooms. There are 9 display rooms/suites, 6-7 are rotating exhibits and 2-3 are permanent exhibits. All are wonderful. An added bonus is that the display rooms/suites are all air-conditioned, a nice relief from what can be hot days walking around old San Juan. There is an entrance fee, $7 IIRC. Well worth it.

Put this on your itinerary

Feb 2022

I visit Museo de las Americas whenever I am on the east coast of Puerto Rico. The permanent exhibits are full of history of indigenous peoples and conquests and, the temporary ones never disappoint. The building itself, with an incredible interior courtyard, is a work of art, too.

Admission is incredibly inexpensive. Bring your ‘tweens and teens – not recommended for small children.

Fascinating and varied exhibits in the old Spanish barracks

Jan 2022

This museum, located on the second floor of the original barracks for occupying Spanish troops, has a wide variety of temporary and permanent collections that cover history, culture, and modern art. We were particularly impressed with the effort to describe the influence of enslaved African people on contemporary Puerto Rican life. When we visited, there was an exhibit of work by Antonio Martolell and friends, begun after Hurricane Maria and completed during the pandemic. And in Gallery 8 (warning :not appropriate for children) – a collection of pre-Columbian fetish clay figures that escaped destruction by missionaries – depicting … well, not appropriate for children. We only had time for one museum; really glad we chose this one.

Small park with interesting sculptures

A small park is hidden under the wall of the old city. You can get there through the gate from Princess Boulevard, which is closed after 6 pm. There are several interesting sculptures inside, it won’t take long.

Impressive composition

March 2017 • For two

This place is not only beautiful, but also functional. Here, in the shade of tropical trees, the suffering tourist will be able to escape from the heat and urban heat. The memorial itself is original in its composition and makes many people stop and, at least, take a picture, and at the most, think about the times to which this monument is dedicated.

We spent a few days at OSJ and were walking around to see the sites and stumbled upon this place.

This is a beautiful garden with 5 statues and is known as the American Heritage Square. 5 bronze statues and sculptures by José Buscaglia. Faith Legacy, Intellectual Legacy, Blood Legacy, and Hispanic Legacy performance. There is a small amphitheater with concrete chairs. There is also a playground with equipment that almost looks like exercise equipment in the sun. nine0003

This is definitely a nice place to sit and relax in the shade.
