“Cuban artist Zilia Sanchez (b. 1926) often says, ‘Soy isla’ (‘I am an island’), expressing her desire for solitary, uncompromising
practice. It also serves as a metaphor for her experience as an islander-connected to and disconnected from both the mainland
and mainstream art currents, such as concretism, gestural abstraction, and minimalism. Characterized by reductive forms, clean
lines, and sensuous curves suggestive of the female body, Sanchez’s work frequently references protagonists from ancient mythology
and lunar motifs while embracing ambiguity. This groundbreaking volume examines her paintings, sculptures, works on paper,
and graphic illustrations together with archival ephemera. It traces Sanchez’s artistic journey from her early years in Cuba
through her travels in Europe and residence in New York in the 1960s to her move to Puerto Rico, where she still lives and
works. With spectacular illustrations of more than 75 artworks, insightful essays situating Sanchez within the context of
global modernism, and a conversation with the artist, this is the most comprehensive publication on Sanchez’s art to date.”–Jacket

The handsome catalogue analyzes the evolution of Kalho’s (b. Mexico) unique style and how photography, folkart, early 20th
century painting, Pre-Columbian art, religion and science influenced her art. Shows a fantastic colonial painting of two women
with very similar to her modern interpretation of two Fridas. The exhibition presents a good number of Kahlo’s paintings,
drawings, watercolors, sketches and prints created from 1925 to 1951, along the works by artists and photographers that with
her contributed to the artistic renaissance of post revolutionary Mexico: Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Hermenegildo Bustos,
Jose Maria Velasco, Jose Guadalupe Posada, Guillermo Kahlo, Mardonio Magaña, Adolfo Best Maugard, Lucienne Block, Manuel
Alvarez Bravo, and the Casasola brothers among others. The exhibition includes Diego Rivera’s preparatory sketches for the
now destroyed mural “Sueño de paz, pesadilla de guerra”. A Beautifully researched and presented catalogue

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and educated on the doctoral level at New York University before traveling to India, China
and Japan to study art, literature and cultural history, Victor Vazquez has been working as an artist for more than 20 years,
creating photographs, three-dimensional objects, videos and installation works in which the human body figures both conceptually
and formally. In this generous exhibition catalogue, published to coincide with the artist’s 2007 Ponce Art Museum exhibition,
Vazquez offers a series of semiotic constructs that navigate identity, ritual, politics and anthropological inquiry. Themes
include the duality of language and meaning and the relationships between nature, culture, memory and identity. The works
are eloquent in their sense of discovery and surprise–sometimes sensual, sometimes frightening, but always worthy of prolonged
    examination

Guests of Ponce will have the opportunity to plan an interesting excursion program. The city has preserved many prominent historical sites and numerous museums. One of the most visited in the city is the Museum Castillo-Serrales – a historical museum, the exposition of which is dedicated to the history of the development of the region’s industry. Here are collected thematic exhibits dedicated to the history of rum production, as well as the cultivation of sugar cane. The location of the museum is a beautiful old mansion, the very first exposition in it opened at 1991 year.

Visitors to Ponce can diversify excursions to historical places with walks in picturesque natural areas, as well as active entertainment that can be found here for every taste. At … Open

The museum building itself is of great historical value; it was built in 1926 for one of the wealthy industrial magnates. The mansion was built in the Spanish-Moroccan style; over the years of its existence, it has managed to fully preserve its unique appearance and interior decoration elements. Like many years ago, today the historic building is surrounded by a beautiful landscaped garden, which will be a pleasure to walk around after the tour. nine0037

The building of the Institute of Culture located nearby is of great historical value. In 1899, it was built according to the design of the famous architect Victor Manuel Domenech. At the time of completion, the house was the most luxurious in the city. The façade of the building is decorated with arched windows with an unusual decorative finish, and old wooden doors, decorated with handmade carvings and glass inserts, have been preserved in the building. Ancient bas-reliefs have survived on the facade, the interior decoration of the mansion is also striking in its luxury. Once the building housed the local Institute of Culture, and since 2008 it houses a museum dedicated to the history of the city and the culture of its inhabitants. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

One of the most colorful and conspicuous in the city is the building with the unusual name Park Bombay. Its facade is painted in black and red colors, and the roof is crowned with a huge dome with a turret, which is visible from many city streets. At first glance, it is extremely difficult to determine the purpose of such a building; for many decades, the main fire station in the city was located in the building. nine0037

The building was built in 1882, literally its current name can be translated as “pump park”. The fire station, which was opened in this building at the end of the 19th century, was the first in the state. Now the building houses a thematic museum with a very diverse collection. Its visitors can see what tools were used to extinguish fires over a hundred years ago, as well as see a collection of old black and white photographs. A special exposition is dedicated to the largest fires that the state has experienced in its history. nine0037

The largest and most interesting art museum in Ponce is the Museum of Art. The history of its creation is connected with the name of the governor Louis A. Ferre, it was his private collection that laid the foundation for the formation of the museum’s exposition. Currently, the exhibition halls store about 4.5 thousand works of art, including paintings and sculptures by famous local masters, as well as collections of engravings and photographs. The museum presents paintings by famous European masters, here you can see rare works by Cranach and Rubens. nine0037

One of the main architectural symbols of Ponce is the Cathedral of Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Guadalupe, located near the main city square. This cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in the city; its construction took place in the second half of the 17th century. Over the long history of its existence, it has lost almost all of its original elements, the cathedral was repeatedly destroyed and underwent large-scale reconstruction. The last of these was completed in 1835, since then the main cathedral of Ponce has remained almost unchanged. The facade of the cathedral is painted white, and its silver-colored domes are clearly visible from the surrounding streets. Many valuable religious artifacts have been preserved within the walls of the cathedral. On the days of major Christian holidays, the most significant celebrations are held here. nine0037

In the immediate vicinity of the city there are several interesting archaeological areas, many of which are also available for excursions today. One of the most interesting is the Indian Ceremonial Center Tibbs, which is a unique open-air ethnographic museum. In the area where the museum is located today, traces of an ancient ceremonial complex, which was built and used by the Arawak Indians, were found. The Indian tribes living in this territory were completely destroyed during the period of colonization, and an ancient Indian village was recreated on the territory of the archaeological area. There is a small museum in which you can see the finds discovered by archaeologists. nine0037

Very clean and comfortable. It was a great location in my old neighborhood so many memories. And the price was very reasonable. I would recommend for anyone looking for this kind of alternative. I liked the security measures.

Clean and well decorated. Nice private side patio, full kitchen, internet TV, both bedrooms were nice with an individual AC in the LR and each BR. This met my wife’s approval – well done!
