Nagano Prefecture

Nagano is a prefecture located in the center of Japan, the island of Honshu. Nagano attracts visitors from different parts of Japan and other countries with beautiful mountain scenery, untouched nature, hot springs, and here you can also get acquainted with the monuments of national cultural heritage. This place is often called the “Roof of Japan” as the Northern, Central and Southern Japanese Alps converge here. Nagano is home to many rivers, lakes, and hot springs, making it one of the most scenic prefectures in Japan. Nagano has four national natural parks – Minami Arupusu, Joshin’etsu Kogen, Chichibu-Tama and Chubu Sangaku. nine0003

Attractions:

Among the attractions of Nagano, Zenkoji Temple is worth mentioning. It is an example of architecture from the Edo period. This is one of the main temples in Japan, the first Buddha image brought to Japan in the 7th century is kept here. The image of the Buddha is not available to the public eye and only a duplicate of it is put on display every six years. The roof of the Hinoki Main Hall is the largest thatched roof in Japan. The streets surrounding the temple are lit with ancient lanterns, which emphasize and convey the atmosphere of ancient Japan. nine0009
Dai o Wasabi Farm is the largest wasabi farm in Japan and has been growing wasabi since 1915. The farm covers 15 hectares of land and it took 200 workers and over 10 years to clear the land to grow the first wasabi root. Walking around the farm will be a great pleasure, and when you get hungry you can taste wasabi as a seasoning for absolutely any dish, including ice cream, beer and sausages!

Located in the center of the prefecture is Matsumoto City, a gateway to the Chubu Sangaku National Nature Park. On its territory there is an ancient feudal castle – Matsumoto Castle of the 16th century. There are only four castles in Japan that have been designated “National Treasures” and Matsumoto Castle is one of them. The five-story main tower is one of the oldest castle buildings in existence in Japan. Construction of the main tower began in 1592, when the country’s military rulers fought for dominance. Matsumoto Castle is one of the few large castles from the feudal era that has survived to this day in its original form.

The city is also famous for its cabinetmakers. Furniture has been produced in the area since the 16th century, and as they say: “-Without a single nail.” Craftsmen used bamboo wedges and collected items soundly and for centuries.

Kamikochi Plain is located at an altitude of one and a half thousand meters above sea level, it is very picturesque. Climbers come to this place to start climbing. Nearby is the beautiful Taisho Lake, located at the site of the Yakedake volcano eruption at 1915 year. You will also find the Kappa Bridge here, which offers amazing views of Mt. Hataka. Thanks to volcanoes, the area is rich in hot springs.

The Azumino area lies at the foot of the Northern Japanese Alps. It houses the Sake Museum, which exhibits over 100 varieties of this drink.

Jigokudani Yaen-koen (Jigokudani Monkey Park) or Hell Valley Wild Monkey Park was opened in 1964 to attract tourists from all over the world who want to see the famous snow monkey (Japanese macaque). The place is located in the town of Nakano, Nagano Prefecture, where snow can lie for up to four months a year, and the average winter temperature is -5 ° C. Nakano is a small cozy town, the natural diversity of which is excellent: apple, pear orchards and vineyards. And the vegetation is surrounded by mountains with famous ski slopes, hotels and hot springs. The path to the “monkey resort” from the parking lot is not significant: 1.6 km along a picturesque path along a forest of snow-covered trees, at a temperature of about 4 degrees Celsius. Tourists are advised to take a wallet and provisions with them, since the entrance to the park is paid (about 500 yen), and there is nowhere to eat here. nine0009
Sometimes up to 200 monkeys can be seen taking hot baths in the park.
According to the legend, the first to take a warm bath was one of the females, who climbed into the water to get scattered beans. And after her, the rest of the monkeys learned this.

Monkeys living outside the park, during especially cold weather, plunge into the water up to their necks, where they sit most of the time. When it gets warmer, they go looking for food. If a wet monkey climbs out of the water, then in severe frost the wool is covered with ice, and it becomes even colder. For such cases, the monkeys have a system of duty: several animals with dry hair bring food while others sit in the water. nine0003

Winter sports enthusiasts flock to Nagano Mountains in winter. About 20 million people visit this place every year.
In this way, the climate of Nagano Prefecture, which is not conducive to the development of the area, is beneficial to the tourism business that flourishes here.
