Central Park in New York: photo, description, interesting places

Central Park in New York is today considered one of the most famous and largest parks in the world. It is located in the center of Manhattan and covers a total area of 3.4 square kilometers. Approximately 40 million visitors come here every year, making it the most popular park in all of America. New York hotels are conveniently located nearby, so you can combine pleasant walks and relaxation.

It is impossible to visit all the attractions of Central Park in one day. You need to set aside at least two days to have time to see everything and enjoy the atmosphere of a cozy corner in the middle of Manhattan.

The navigation here is very simple and clear, signs and stands with up-to-date information are installed everywhere. Landmarks in Central Park are the numbering of streets around the perimeter of the park. It stretches from 59th to 110th streets on the north and from 5th to 8th avenues on the west.

Creation idea

The construction of the park was first discussed in 1853, when a site for a green place in the middle of the city had just been allocated. Two architects Calvert Vaux and Frederick Olmsted worked on the project at once. Every corner and path here has been created by hand, but real craftsmanship is felt, as everything looks very natural.

More than 4 million trees and bushes have been planted here, several lakes, two ice skating rinks, lawns that are used for sports, many different alleys, playgrounds for children and even their own zoo have been created. Due to rich and lush vegetation, the park is very popular among birds. Along the perimeter, it is surrounded by a road used by cyclists, rollerbladers, as well as joggers. nine0003

What to see in Central Park

Central Park has become an American dream for many. More than 250 films were filmed in the locations of this park. One of them was Central Alley (Central Mall, from 66th to 72nd streets). Old trees rise up on both sides, and under them there are many shops. The alley itself is like a living artery, because of the endless stream of people who walk slowly along the path.

The alley will lead you to the busiest square in the territory of the Central Park – Bethesda Terrace (Bethesda Terrace) with the fountain of the same name (72nd street). Concerts, dance open-airs are held here, birthdays and weddings are arranged – in general, it is never boring.

One of Central Park’s favorite places to hang out is Great Lawn (Great Lawn, 79th to 85th Streets). The green field is so impressive in size that there is enough space for any leisure. In the warm season, this is a popular place to have a picnic, lie on the grass, play baseball, basketball, especially since special playgrounds are equipped for this. Concerts are often held even on the Great Lawn. nine0003

Also nearby is Belvedere Castle (Belvedere Castle, 79th Street) is a 19th-century building located on a stone elevation of Vista Rock. And next to it is a pond with turtles.

Shakespeare Garden (Shakespeare Garden, from 79th to 80th streets) is famous for the fact that the writer himself planted a Mulberry tree here back in 1602. In the garden you will see various types of plants, trees, as well as beautiful flowers that are mentioned in the works of William Shakespeare. nine0003

Nearby is the Delacorte Theatre, (Delacorte Theatre). In summer, there is a festival called “Shakespeare in the Park” (Shakespeare in the Park), in which even popular movie stars participate (for example, Natalie Portman, Meryl Streep, Al Pacino and others).

Next scenic stop – Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir (86th to 96th Streets). The largest body of water on the territory of Central Park, around which locals love to jog. nine0003

Until 1934, the western part of the park served as a pasture for sheep, now it is called – Sheep Pasture (Sheep Meadow, from 66th to 69th streets). In the summer, there are free movie screenings in the evenings.

Central Park Zoo

This is truly an amazing place in the center of Manhattan! Location: 5th Ave, 63rd to 66th Street. It is this zoo that is known to many from the cartoon “Madagascar”. Here you can see lions, polar bears, monkeys and even penguins. There is also a petting zoo where you can touch domestic animals (sheep, cows, pigs and goats). nine0003

All the animals here are well-groomed. conditions are created for them, corresponding to their habitat. New Yorkers themselves love to take care of animals, often donating considerable amounts to zoos.

Zoo opening hours:

  • winter: 13:00 – 16:00;
  • summer: 10:00 – 17:00.

Ticket price:

  • for adults – $12;
  • for children from 3 years old and pensioners – $ 7-9;
  • children under 3 years old – free of charge. nine0076

Sports and Activities in Central Park

Central Park is the perfect place for jogging, playing games, frisbees and just flying a kite. But there are also entire areas for this or that leisure.

There are many rental shops in the park. where you can rent some sports equipment or a means of transportation. The most popular of them is a bicycle, but it is allowed to ride only on special paths. Cycling time is limited. Both cyclists and, for example, roller skaters cannot be on the paths at the same time. Therefore, the time of stay for one or another alternates. nine0003

Ice Rinks

There are two ice skating rinks on the territory of Central Park, which are open from October to March.

Wollman Rink (Wollman Rink, 6th Avenue, 59th Street) is one of the most famous ice rinks in the world. Its area is 2600 square meters. It is also a popular location for filming movie scenes, one of which was the comedy Home Alone 2. In the summer (from June to September), an amusement park appears instead of a skating rink – food courts, attractions and children’s playgrounds work. nine0003

Tickets to Wallman Rink can be purchased online at the website. And also see the schedule of skating sessions there.

Another equally popular skating rink is Lasker Rink (Lasker Rink, 5th Ave., 107th Street). In winter, you can not only go skating, but also watch a game of hockey or professional figure skating. And in the summer, a swimming pool is located on the site of the skating rink. On the hottest days it becomes a popular place for city dwellers.

Cafes and restaurants in Central Park

Outdoor Terrace Restaurant Loeb Boathouse (74th to 75th Streets) offers not only delicious meals but also interesting leisure activities. Here you can rent a boat ($12 / 1 hour) or a gondola ($30 / 30 min.) and ride on Central Park Lake.

The Tavern on the Green is located near Sheep Pasture (67th Street). Before that, there was a building for the rest of the shepherds. And now this cozy place with chic illumination and a classic menu is a great option for a romantic dinner. Continuing the theme of the films, the “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” scene with Jimm Carrey was filmed at Tavern on the Green. John Lennon also celebrated one of his birthdays here. nine0003

Snacks are available at the entrance to Central Park at the Ferrara Italian kiosk, as well as at the fast food restaurant at the Wollman ice rink. Not far from the zoo, you can eat at the Leaping Frog Café.

As a rule, the health of a nation is judged by sporting achievements, by mass character, etc. I can state with all responsibility that ‘s passion for sports in Ecuador is massive, almost universal

Football in Ecuador

In the first place, of course, football. On the days of international matches, the whole country is rooting for the Ecuador national team! Production stops, taxis disappear in cities, housewives forget about their direct duties, banks close, urban transport stops, reinforced police and army squads are pulled up to the central stadium, certain public transport avenues are closed, maternity wards are closed. nine0162
People who want to watch the match on TV, discuss what is happening on the field, send the referees to the soap before the match starts, give advice to the team on how to play and not to play near any tenda (shop, an analogue of our “lump”).
On this day, the whole country lives for football!
The fact that the Ecuador team scored another goal becomes clear immediately from the signals of the cars on the streets, but if the Ecuador team also won, then something unimaginable is happening on the streets in the first minutes !!! All cars in the city begin to honk, explosions of firecrackers, etc. are heard. nine0162
Fans gather near the shops and the dismantling of the last match begins with beer or vodka. As a rule, everything ends quite peacefully and quite late. And a few more days after the match, the country continues to analyze, discuss, compare the advantages and disadvantages of one or another team, i.e. live football. Passions boil for several days until they subside completely. And again everything falls into place, banks begin to work, public transport begins to run according to the schedule, housewives begin their direct duties. . . nine0003

Equaball or Ecuadorian volleyball

In second place in terms of mass is volleyball in Ecuadorian – what it is and why in Ecuadorian – I will try to explain to you. At one time, while studying at the university, I played for the national team, which was part of the country’s major league. So, volleyball in Ecuadorian is when a soccer ball is used (if you remember, it is quite heavier than a volleyball), which can be thrown with two or one hand and this is not considered a mistake. All other rules are the same as in big volleyball. Well, perhaps that’s all. Playing volleyball, as a rule, begins in the afternoon at about three o’clock. There are a lot of volleyball courts in any city. Social activists prepare the grounds an hour or two before the start of the matches. Mobile eateries with unpretentious cuisine and drinks are being pulled up, teams and fans are gathering. nine0162
The teams, most often, are taxi drivers, whose sedentary work makes them look for a way out of energy, in particular, on the volleyball court.
The spectacle is very curious and quite massive.

In the photo: Ecuador, Quito, an ice rink in one of the supermarkets. Photo is clickable.

Cycling

Well, the third most popular can probably be called a passion for cycling. In cities, it is quite difficult to ride bicycles due to the abundance of transport, so Saturdays and Sundays are used for walking. Active life in Quito (the capital of Ecuador) practically stops these days. The wealthiest families go on Saturday – Sunday to the sea (all beaches are filled to capacity these days), to lakes or hot springs outside the city, or to Metropolitano Park, which is located within the city, but at an altitude of about 3500 m. The most beautiful park in Ecuador ! Gorgeous eucalyptus groves! Special paths for cyclists, places for picnics.
nine0003

Fitness or aerobics in Ecuador

But what about aerobics? There are a lot of gymnasiums for aerobics, but it is difficult to call this sport mass because of the relative high cost – a month of classes in Quito costs $ 10 – $ 15 (in other cities it is half the price). There are a lot of aerobics schools in any city, and in order to attract a client, as a rule, on Sundays in public parks, these schools hold mass free performances.
And, most interestingly, most often the coaches in these schools are men. nine0162
Our next page is about swings and parks in Ecuador.
