Silent Night History
The carol Silent Night was written in in German, in 1816.
It was penned by young priest Joseph Mohr in Austria, after parish had suffered twelve debilitating years of war due to the Napoleonic wars.
In 18181, Mohr’s friend Franz Xaver Gruber wrote music to accompany the verses. The two sang Silent Night for the first time on Christmas Eve.
Since then, it has been translated into more than 300 languages, including Spanish. It was designated a “treasured item of Intangible Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
“This is a song of freedom for the world, whose beautiful melody and text have inspired versions in more than 300 languages,” Michael Neureiter, president of Austria’s Silent Night Society, told Catholic News Service.
“Although it comes from the Catholic tradition, its calm, harmonic sound has made it accessible internationally. As such, it’s not just a Christian song, but also a human song.”

Spanish Lyrics Translation
You’ll notice that Spanish translation is different from the English version.
Here’s my translation from Spanish to English, to give a sense of this:

In fact, this carol is a little bit longer and has more versions, but today we’ll concentrate in this one.
- Noche de Paz
– “Noche” means “night”.
It is a feminine noun (la noche, una noche).
– “Paz” means “peace”. This is also a feminine noun (la paz).
So the literal translation for this is “Night of Peace“
- Noche de Amor
– “Amor” is “love”. “Amor” is a masculine noun (el amor, un amor).
Not very difficult to translate, right? “Night of love“
- Todo duerme en rededor
- “Todo”
means “all”, “everything”. This a neuter noun, note that we can say, just in some cases, “el todo”, with a metaphoric sense.
- Brilla la estrella con su luz
- “Brilla”
, from the infinitive “Brillar” (To shine).
“Brilla” corresponds to the 3rd person singular, present tense.
- anunciando al Niño Jesús.
- “anunciando”
. This is the gerund form of the verb “anunciar”, and corresponds to the English form “announcing”.
= Jesus.
And our last words:
- Brilla la estrella de luz.
Very similar to the sentence above; the only difference is “la estrella de luz” instead of “la estrella con su luz”.

The original text of the song Stille Nacht was written by an Austrian priest, Father Josef Mohr, and the music was composed by schoolteacher Franz Xaver Gruber. In 1859 John Freeman Young wrote an English version that remains popular to this day. The first performance of the song dates back to 1818 at the Nikolaus-Kirche (Church of St. Nicholas) in Oberndorf. To date, more than 300 performers have included the song in their repertoire.
