La novela trata del gobierno de Roberto Sánchez Vilella y de muchos personajes importantes de la época, como Jeannette Ramos Buonomo, Luis Muñoz Marín, Jaime Benítez Rexach y otros. Se centra y les da vuelta a los chismes políticos de la época, reconstruyendo lo que pudo haber pasado o lo que efecto pasó. Los chismes van desde la riña de Luis Muñoz Marín con Roberto Sánchez Villela, la pugna de poder entre ellos por el Partido Popular Democrático, el que Muñoz Marín no dejara a Sánchez Villela hacer su gobernar, hasta la vida personal de Sánchez Villela. En cuanto a la vida personal, expone cómo pudieron ser las circunstancias para que Sánchez Villela dejara a su esposa y finalmente se casara con su ayudante de gabinete, Jeannette Ramos Buonomo. Todos estos acontecimientos son percibidos y relatados desde el personaje principal, una mujer llamada Lucía, que se encuentra en una batalla interna sobre quién es, quién quiere ser y las circunstancias a su alrededor. Este personaje al final tiene un despertar, sobre la política, el género, las construcciones sociales y la época en la cual vive. La novela sin duda alguna, te captará la atención desde la página 1, y te ayuda a entrelazar y entender la vida de Sánchez Villela; de quien poco se habla y poco se sabe; su vida pasó como un recuerdo oscuro que debe ser desapercibido.

La novela se sitúa en la preparación, la acción y el desenlace de la Insurrección Nacionalista de 1950 de Albizu Campos. Por medio de la narración de los personajes históricos de la época, hila la historia de cada uno, sus conexiones, vidas, vicisitudes que pasaron al declararle la guerra al imperialismo norteamericano. De una forma muy detallada, se narran las reuniones antes de la revuelta, cómo afectó la vida personal de Lolita Lebrón, Blanca Canales, Rafael Cancel y Albizu Campos. No obstante, sus personales principales son Delia Rivera y Elio Torresola, pareja y partícipes de la insurrección. La autora por medio de la pasión, el amor a la patria, el valor y el sacrificio, relata cómo fueron esos cuatro días en que se mantuvo la República de Puerto Rico en Jayuya. Un hecho en donde reinó la incertidumbre no tan solo del país sino de la vida de todos aquellos involucrados y de cómo se enfrentarían al nuevo futuro.

Es la historia idílica de un conquistador que llega a Puerto Rico. Basado en la conquista y colonización de nuestro país, “Un día llegaron en grandes canoas, cambiamos nuestros nombres…todo fue un engaño. Nos robaron las tierras y nos esclavizaron. Protestamos y nos atropellaron…La situación de Puerto Rico es desastrosa”. El personaje principal, deja su país, España atrás para entonces lanzarse a la aventura que fue venir en barco a las Américas como dueños y señores. Dentro de su convencimiento de colonización siente pena por los esclavos, los aborígenes y quiere ayudarlos ensenarles a leer, escribir y la fe. Así el autor expone otra doble colonización y la percepción que tenían los colonizadores, de que los que había, los inferiores, los africanos, todos eran unos infelices. Luego de un tiempo, Ricardo el personaje principal tiene que abandonar la isla por un flechazo en una pierna para curarse ¿de la herida o de su ambición?

El canal dos de Telemundo (WKAQ-TV) en Puerto Rico nos brindaba a todos en nuestras casas un repertorio de novelas con actores y actrices que nos atraían todas las noches al frente del televisor para poder ver el próximo episodio y sufrir con la protagonista, que casi siempre era la victima de las circunstancias, su “mala y buena” suerte durante su odisea en la trama.

Las novelas eran una parte importante en la vida de la mayoría de las madres que trabajaban y estaban en ese trajín diario de llegar a la casa para cocinar, limpiar y asegurarse de que sus niños tenían lo que necesitaban para hacer sus asignaciones.

En la casa de mi mama siempre había un televisor blanco y negro el cual durante las veladas de la noche brindaba ese entretenimiento con las diferentes programaciones tanto de música, comedia, artistas invitados, y por supuesto las novelas.

En estas novelas participaban actores y actrices Puertorriqueños a los cuales nosotros conocíamos muy bien. De hecho, cuando anunciaban una nueva novela la cual irían a participar uno de esos actores, ya se sabía con anticipación que la novela iba a estar buena solo por quienes estarían participando de la misma.

Entre las muy buenas novelas que estuvieron de moda cuando yo me criaba en el condominio Las Gladiolas de Hato Rey se encontraba la novela “Cristina Bazán” con Jose Luis Rodriguez (El Puma), quien por cierto era él quien cantaba la canción tema “Voy a perder la cabeza por tu amor,” protagonizando con Johanna Rosaly. Esta novela fue de mucha popularidad en Puerto Rico por su acostumbrada trama de la muchacha pobre y el joven rico que la “rescata.” Entre otras actrices que participaron de esta novela estuvo Gilda Haddock, Alba Nydia Diaz, Esther Sandoval entre otros.

“El Puma” también protagonizo la novela “El Idolo” junto a Marilyn Pupo, la cual se hizo bien popular en aquellos tiempos.

“Fue sin querer” con Gladys Rodríguez y Sandro, fue otra novela y el que cantaba la canción tema fue también Sandro quien era un cantante español que nos volvía a todas loca por sus muy bonitas y románticas canciones y bailes.

Von-Marie Mendez también protagonizó varias novelas en las cuales una de las que fue bien famosa fue “Tanairí.” Esta novela fue bien popular por su trama con la historia de la esclavitud y la lucha que tanto los esclavos como algunos blancos tuvieron batallando en contra de los abusos hacia los negros.

Interesantemente la historia se centraba en esta muchacha blanca (Soledad) la cual había nacido de una mama negra, pero ella misma no sabía que su mama era negra a pesar de que fue criada por ella. Durante la trama, los personajes se presentaban con trajes y modas de los tiempos de antes donde se ponían esos trajes largos con enaguas alzadas y se hacían unos peinados bien elaborados.

Esta novela también se presento en Estados Unidos con mucho éxito.

De las últimas novelas que recuerdo que fueron muy buenas en Puerto Rico también se encuentran “Laura Guzman…Culpable con Juan Ferrara y Amalia Cruz y la novela “Coralito.”

Pienso que al la Isla de Encanto estar cubierta de mares y océanos por todo alrededor, la novela de “Coralito” simplemente brindaba ese aire de lo que es una jibarita de la costa. Esta novela tuvo como actriz principal a Sully Diaz y el actor principal Salvador Pineda.

Hoy en día no veo novelas, pero lo cierto es que éstas novelas del ayer brindaron esa euforia que todas las madres y los televidentes compartieron cada vez que la protagonista se defendía o luchaba por sus derechos dejando de llorar o sufrir, y finalmente enterándose al final de quien era realmente el malo o el bueno.
