The number of zip codes in the United States periodically changes as the U.S. Post Office finds it necessary to add new codes in response to increasing mail volume. According to the U.S. Census Bureau and other sources, there are at least 40,000 five-digit zip code areas in the U.S. In a period of one year, November 2006 to 2007, around 200 zip codes were added in the U. S.

The zip code, an acronym for Zoning Improvement Plan, became necessary in the early 1960s as business mail increased to such a point that it was nearly 80 percent of mail traffic. An Advisory Board of the USPS Department recommended that a coding system be developed to facilitate the speed of mail handling by increasing the use of machinery to sort the mail. The particular system, the Zip Code system, began on July 1, 1963.

Postal zones, already in place since the early 1940s, assisted in developing the new zip codes. The new system required that the entire mail system be realigned. The Metro System involved the installation of mail transportation centers in 85 cities in the United States. Next over 550 sectional centers were developed. Finally the particular codes were assigned to each center and then the particular addresses each served.

By the start date of 1 July 1963, each address in the U.S. had an assigned zip code. The first digit referred to one of ten geographical areas of the U.S.; the next two digits indicated a population center. The last two digits divided the population centers into small postal centers or zones within larger cities. Initially, no one was required to use zip codes.

In 1967, the U.S.P.O. required those who mailed items by second and third class mail to presort by the five digit code. In 1978, the postal system deemed it necessary to add a hyphen and four more digits to zip codes to speed the processing of the ever-increasing volume of mail. The resulting zip+4 system was in place by 1983. The additional four digits allowed for the mail to be sorted according to a city block or a particular office building. Like its predecessor the five-digit zip code, the zip+4 reduced the number of times a piece of mail has to be handled.

After two lost decades, the weakest local economies in the US may face the threat of a pandemic

After two lost decades, the weakest local economies in the US may face the threat of a pandemic

prosperous and underperforming US states as thousands of “troubled” zip codes (city and town areas) faced job cuts and business closures, setting the stage for a “K-shaped” recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

A new analysis by the Economic Innovation Group examining the economic patterns of some 25,000 ZIP codes shows that between 2000 and 2018, prosperous regions boomed, capturing a disproportionate share of job creation and new businesses.

For the approximately 5,000 “troubled” zip codes, this period was a time of missed opportunity as these cities increasingly fell behind economically and jobs declined even during the recovery period. The largest number of jobs in such regions were in industries and professions that were affected by the pandemic.

Economists analyzing the path of the US economic recovery are concerned that deepening divisions between industries and the population lie within national economic growth indicators, as some industries recover quickly, while, for example, employment in the leisure and hospitality industry at 20% remains from February figures.

According to the EIG, service workers make up a disproportionate share of industries that are already economically lagging behind.

“Communities that were already vulnerable and that did not benefit from the pre-pandemic growth period are the most vulnerable during the current crisis,” said EIG President John Lettieri.

As of 2018, almost a quarter of working adults living within the roughly 5,000 disadvantaged zip codes were employed in the service industry.

In contrast, in prosperous cities, only 13% of employed adults worked in the service sector, while half were in managerial and other high-skill jobs that proved more suited to the remote format.

The study combines various education, poverty and employment statistics into an index that divides US Zip Codes into five groups, with the top 20% considered “prosperous” and the bottom 20% as disadvantaged.

The study showed some improvements. In 2018, the number of Americans living in “prosperous,” “convenient,” or average ZIP codes was about 33 million more than in 2000. Welfare is increasingly “moving” to urban areas. These zip codes have become more ethnically and racially diverse, with the percentage of non-white residents in affluent areas rising from 16% to 26%. More Americans from disadvantaged areas began to graduate from high school.

But gaps persist. The number of Americans living in disadvantaged areas has remained at 50 million. This figure has not changed since 2000. This category was disproportionately represented by blacks and Hispanics. About 56% of blacks and 45% of Hispanics lived in economically disadvantaged or at-risk areas.

From 2000 to February 2020, the United States experienced two recessions, one of which was quite deep, and also experienced the longest measured period of continuous growth. At the same time, the economic landscape has changed little, with the population of about two-thirds of the postcodes remaining at the same social level as they were twenty years ago.

With the pandemic triggering a third recession, the gap could widen.
