Uno de los símbolos que distingue a la ciudad señorial de Ponce, Puerto Rico, es su Parque de Bombas. Una hermosa estructura en madera que exhibe un estilo Victoriano con una clara inclusión de elementos arabescos. Fue diseñada por el coronel español y arquitecto Máximo Meana y Guridi e inaugurada a finales del 1882 cuando Puerto Rico aún era colonia de España.

Siguiendo la costumbre de la organización de los edificios en las plazas españolas, el arquitecto Máximo Meana y Guridi ubica el Parque de Bombas en la Plaza de Ponce, justo detrás de la Iglesia.

Destacándose los colores simbólicos de la ciudad de Ponce, el rojo y el negro, el interior se organiza con un espacio central amplio y abierto, de dos niveles y flanqueado por dos torres laterales. El espacio abierto se utilizaba como garaje para los camiones de bomberos, y las dos torres como viviendas y áreas de exposición.

Una hermosa estructura en madera que exhibe un estilo Victoriano con una clara inclusión de elementos arabescos.

Los colores de la ciudad de Ponce; el rojo símbolo de fuego y de fortaleza y el negro que representa la noche, el arrepentimiento, la prudencia y la modestia.

Los elementos arabescos presentes en el Parque de Bombas diseñado por el coronel y arquitecto español Máximo Meana y Guridi.

En el año1990, se convierte en el museo que hoy continuamos disfrutando. Actualmente se exhiben piezas del antiguo equipo contra incendios de la ciudad y recuerdos de los bomberos integrantes del cuerpo.

Dos escaleras localizadas en lados opuestos, engalanan la entrada al museo y conducen al segundo nivel donde se encuentra parte de la exposición del museo.

Nuestro amigo, el arquitecto Pablo Ojeda, participó de su restauración en los años 1986-87. Nos indicó que la pintura del rosetón es original del 1883 y él intervino para consolidarla y retocarla.

El arquitecto Pablo Ojeda también restauró los ornamentos que se encuentran en las esquinas, que a diferencia del rosetón, estos son calados en madera, pintados y colocados en el plafón.

En la segunda planta encontramos una exposición muy interesante de otro símbolo de Ponce, el león, presente tanto en la bandera como en el escudo de la ciudad.

Cada león es una obra de arte y los artistas que intervinieron plasmaron sobre ellos, poemas, canciones y refranes entre otros elementos. Se nos pareció un poco a la exposición que recientemente se realizó en Madrid sobre las Meninas.

Las obras de construcción finalizaron a tiempo para la feria agrícola, sirviendo como plataforma de exposición de productos agrícolas durante el evento y convirtiéndose en la sede de la convención de agricultores. La primera brigada de bomberos se mudan al edificio al concluir la feria y por 108 años continuó su operación como estación de bomberos.
