Río es una película de animación de 20th Century Fox y Blue Sky Studios, dirigida por Carlos Saldanha y escrita por Don Rhymer. Los personajes son interpretados por Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Rodrigo Santoro, Will.i.am, Jamie Foxx, Tracy Morgan, George López, Leslie Mann y el cine Jermaine Clement. Fue lanzada el 15 de abril de 2011. Río; una de las películas más alegres y vitalistas que he visto últimamente, con una buena banda sonora que te transporta literalmente a la ciudad que le da nombre, Río de Janeiro, para contarnos la historia de un aburguesado loro azul que encuentra el amor y la libertad en este paraíso brasileño. La película está cuajada de animales, sobre todo aves, por lo que es ideal para aparecer en esta veterana serie en La Ciencia de la Vida. Así que empezaremos con la clásica identificación y descripción de la mayoría de las especies que en ella aparecen, intentando aproximarnos lo máximo posible a la realidad.

Blu y Perla (Cyanopsitta spixii)
Estos dos magníficos ejemplares azules son los protagonistas animales de la película. Blu fue sacado de la jungla cuando era solo un polluelo y debido a la vida sedentaria y llena de facilidades que lleva junto con su dueña Linda, no ha desarrollado su capacidad para volar al principio de la película, cosa que se solucionará cuando conoce a la bella Perla, una hembra salvaje que se encontraba en el centro de recuperación de especies para intentar sacar adelante un programa de cría en cautividad, ya que se supone que eran los dos últimos ejemplares de su especie. Ambos pertenecen a la especie Cyanopsitta spixii, conocida con el nombre vulgar de guacamayo de Spix o araninha azul. En la realidad, el estatus de estos guacamayo no varía mucho con respecto al de la película, ya que se piensa que no quedan parejas en libertad, y que, en cautividad en zoológicos o parques, pueden quedar apenas unas 70 parejas.

A baby blue macaw is smuggled out of its native Brazil. On the way to the robbers’ headquarters, the truck’s doors accidentally open. The cage container falls to the ground. The smugglers do not notice the loss, and the box goes to the little girl Linda.
Thanks to its coloring, the bird gets the name Dove. The young mistress loves her new pet and tries to make his life as comfortable as possible. After 15 years, an ornithologist friend comes to visit her. With knowledge of the matter, Tulio informs Linda that there are only 2 blue macaws left in the whole world. One of them is with the girl, and the second lives in his Brazilian cattery. To save a rare species, friends need to bring the birds together.
Arriving at the place, the guys introduce Blu to Zhemchuzhinka. A beautiful female immediately drives a young male crazy. However, due to the difference in life views, their communication does not add up. The freedom-loving lady wonders how you can enjoy life while sitting in a cage. And the boring quiet man refuses to live in the jungle. Late at night, poachers enter the nursery. They steal parrots and chain them. Having shown resourcefulness, Blu opens the cage. The birds manage to escape and hide in the jungle.
The further life of the fugitives is full of adventures.
They make new friends, have fun in the bird club, fight monkeys. Joint troubles benefit the relationship of blue macaws. The pearl is imbued with sympathy for her boyfriend and even honors him with a kiss. The winged male masters the skill of flight.
All this time, Linda and Tulio, without closing their eyes, are looking for their pets. Having found them at the airport, the guys decide not to separate the couple in love anymore. The girl transports her property to Rio and stays with an ornithologist.

In this cartoon, both people and animals, or rather, birds, are the central characters . At the same time, there are obvious parallels in the relations of the main characters, which will be interesting to analyze in order to understand the promoted meanings and behaviors.
Plot
The main animal character is a blue macaw. According to the plot, this is the last such parrot in the world (in general, there are two of them, but more on that later).
A huge responsibility fell on his shoulders – “to be the last male of his species.” While still a chick, he is kidnapped by poachers, but during transportation, the box in which he was, randomly falls out of the truck. After some time, the girl Linda finds him, who takes the chick on bail and gives him the nickname “Darling”. For 15 years spent with Linda, the parrot gets used to the comfortable living conditions in her shop, but he never learned to fly.
One fine day, ornithologist Tulio visits Linda with the news that a female blue macaw has been found, and in order to save this species, Linda and her Blu must go with him to Rio de Janeiro. Our heroine agrees to the proposal of the scientist, and they set off on the road. Upon arrival in the resort town of Brazil, our heroes go to the nursery center, where Tulio rescues abandoned birds. There, our little macaw meets a female blue macaw named Zhemchuzhinka, as well as the sinister cockatoo Nigel, who, in turn, helps thieves get into the nursery and steal the blue macaws.
After being caught by poachers, the parrots are chained, caged and left overnight in a warehouse that already contains many of the birds caught. Thanks to Blu’s ability to open the cages, our heroes manage to escape. At the same time, absolutely broken and depressed Linda and her new friend Tulio are posting leaflets around the city – “A couple of blue macaws have disappeared”.
Pearl is unhappy and upset that she is chained to a bird that cannot fly. Our couple spends the rest of the night in the jungle, and in the morning they meet a toucan – Rafael. He says he can help solve “the problem with the chain that binds them.” Raphael leads them to Luis the bulldog, who removes their chains. And then, out of nowhere, the same villain Nigel appears, grabs the Pearl and returns it to the hands of poachers. Darling sees this and plucks up his courage to go on a mission to rescue his beloved. But nothing comes of it, and he, too, finds himself in Nigel’s clutches.
In parallel with these events, Linda and Tulio are on the trail of poachers and learn that the criminals are going to transport the birds to the airport right during the annual carnival and then go to another country to sell them.
An attempt to stop the plane of the villains is doomed to failure. But Ducky’s dexterous beak helps to arrange a “brawl” on board the plane, and in the end, all the birds are free. Darling can’t get over his fear of flying, and Pearl won’t leave him. During this time, Nigel frees himself, attacks them, injures Pearl, and beak-to-beak collides with Blu. The ingenuity of our parrot is again on top, as a result – Nigel is overboard, and the plane crashes. Darling, embracing the Pearl, dives into the ocean in free fall, they are doomed to death, but the “power of love” and the kiss of the Pearl makes him forget about his fear, and he, spreading his wings, begins to soar. In the end, they find their owners, Zhemchuzhina gets better, they have chicks, everyone is happy, happy ending.
It should be noted that the cartoon is musical. And also it has beautiful graphics and a huge palette of colors. Landscapes take the breath away even from an adult, what can we say about a child…
But not everything is as good as it might seem at first glance.
A Western cartoon would not be such (in this case, “Western” is a common noun) if it were not for a number of the following “pitfalls”.
Problems of cartoons
Such cartoons, where the characters are people and animals at the same time, are always interesting, and doubly so for children. Well, let’s find out which heroes were presented to us by Blu Sky and 20th Century Fox Animation.

Let’s start with the figure of Ducky.
Our parrot is a domesticated bird (in other words, a pet), which cannot fly, which prepares toasts for its owner for breakfast, loves affection and care, loves drinking cocoa with marshmallows and spending the night in its cage, is accustomed to comfort and coziness, behaves softly, timidly and insecurely. And the Pearl, on the contrary, was born and spent most of her life in the jungle, and as a result she is an expressive, emotional, strong-willed, fast, nimble, agile, freedom-loving bird.
After these characteristics, it seems that a man and a woman have exchanged their qualities with each other, don’t you think? Darling falls in love with Zhemchuzhinka at first sight, but she does not pay him due attention and at first quite deservedly considers him a “rag” and not a bird.
At the same time, Blu does not act like an egoist at all, it’s just that everyone around him treats him with great awe, reverence and respect, and he takes it for granted. In relations with the Pearl, our hero remains the same soft-bodied, timid and insecure. Trying to explain his feelings, Blu behaves stupidly and sluggishly. The timidity of boys when communicating with girls is quite normal, but in the event that the boys behave like men and the girls behave like women. Here, the social roles are largely reversed, primarily because of the absolutely non-male character of Blu and the non-female character of Zhemchuzhinka. Watch videos from 00:00 to 02:46.
Dove is a vivid example of the important role played by the environment in which a person grows and develops.
His feminine / cutesy / weak character behavior is the result of upbringing – that is, the conditions in which he grew up. Similarly, the conditions of growing up affected the character of the Pearl. At the same time, we are not talking about the fact that the young viewer is shown “bad heroes”, he is simply shown characters who are endowed with inappropriate qualities, which leaves an imprint on the development of the entire plot. By placing the male character in the comfort zone, and the female character in the zone of formation of a strong-willed and strong character, the directors and screenwriters of the cartoon instead of an example of the development of harmonious relationships created an example of inverted behavior patterns. And it carries quite natural harm when broadcasting to a mass audience. After all, children will take an example from such characters that are shown in the cartoon.
Doubt’s partial transformation by the end of the film doesn’t improve the situation either.
The acquired ability to fly, although it serves as a serious stage in personal development, does not at all cancel all those negative aspects in his character that are shown to the young viewer throughout the cartoon and which, in fact, lead to a happy ending.
Finishing the topic about parrots, we should add a few words about the Pearl. She demonstrates the image of a woman who, when meeting men like Golubchik, will clearly take a leading and dominant position in the family, which initially carries a certain imbalance and difficulties in building harmonious relationships.
Images of minor characters
At first glance, they are quite acceptable for a children’s cartoon: these are the romantic toucan Rafael, two bosom friends Pedro and Niko, and also the funny, “slobbery” and simply darling bulldog Luis, but, as is often the case , separate details destroy the whole positive motive:
- Raphael’s toucan chicks are depicted as too wild, naughty and restless, which can provoke nothing but hostility towards children.

Perhaps someone considers such behavior and the appearance of such scenes in a cartoon acceptable, but if you call a spade a spade, then the specified character, who walks around the city center in a bikini, symbolizes the image of a woman of easy virtue to a much greater extent than a dancer, like her named in the cartoon.
In this regard, it is appropriate to quote one comedian: “Somehow I approached one“ half-dressed ”(dressed in a modern way) girl and offered her to have sex, to which she was offended and answered him that I am not some kind of that’s a prostitute.
You know, he said, when I need the help of a policeman, or the help of a nurse, or in order to understand that there is a judge in front of me, I don’t need to ask who they are, I just need to look at their clothes. So, if you are not a prostitute, then why are you wearing her “uniform”?

The presence of such a character in a cartoon for children is unacceptable, since the general attitude and perception of the people around you is largely formed through the background characters. When a person behaves like an idiot, it’s not funny, it’s sad, and usually such people are treated in mental hospitals. By the way, the clothes in which he dances – a golden top and shorts – also cannot be called masculine.

In parallel with the relationship between Blu and Pearl, we are shown the relationship between Blu’s owner Linda and ornithologist Tulio.
Let’s move on to the moment of their first meeting.
One day, a Brazilian ornithologist named Tulio Monteiro comes to Linda in Minnesota and informs her that she is the owner of the last remaining male of the blue macaw breed, and that he has the last female of this breed in Brazil, and if they fail to get offspring, then the view will disappear completely.
When the main characters meet, Linda is shown as a modest, kind, sweet, gentle and intelligent girl. Her behavior is quite consistent with the specified image. After hearing the news, she initially refuses our scientist, because she is afraid to go to a huge and completely unfamiliar city. Fear of something new and fear of being alone or lost are common to many girls. But thanks to her prudence and given the situation, our heroine takes control of her feelings and still agrees to Tulio’s offer to go to Rio de Janeiro.
Linda’s behavior in this scene and the decision she made are a good example to follow. In certain situations, putting other people’s interests above your own is correct and quite reasonable.
However, as the story progresses, Linda shows more and more masculine qualities, she is usually pushed to this by the situation and the infantilism of Tulio, who is initially shown to be absent-minded, weak-willed and very naive. In several scenes (rendered in the video), you can clearly see Linda’s superiority over Tulio in some practical skills, as well as her confidence and purposeful gaze, while Tulio is shown stupidly (Watch video from 04:57 to 06:40) .
In one of the scenes, Linda appears before the viewer in a bathing suit, while she is also asked to “shake her ass” (literally) in front of the audience. Of course, all for the sake of saving parrots – from good intentions.
On this occasion, it is appropriate to quote one oriental parable:
“One modern Englishman, having arrived in India, drew attention to the fact that women there are very different from European ones.
And he asked a brahmin (sage): why is that?
In response, Brahman took out two sweets from his pocket: one was in a wrapper, and the other was not.
And he said: choose. The Englishman took the one in the wrapper.
— Why did you take this particular one? the brahmin asked him.
— Well, why not?! She’s cleaner!..”
He noticed that the Hindus cover their bodies – their heads, arms, legs and even their faces. Back to our scene, when Linda appears in front of Tulio in a carnival outfit, which is a swimsuit + feathers. With a picture and emotional overtones, the directors are trying to present this scene as a “moment of falling in love”, or the so-called “love at first sight”. It is regrettable that our hero (scientist) “fell in love” at the moment when he saw Linda half-naked.
