Battle of Las Piedras and the first siege of Montevideo. Artigas

Battle of Las Piedras and first siege of Montevideo

While in Canelones, Artigas learned that the Spaniards occupied the place of Las Piedras and fortified there. Then he informed his brother Manuel Francisco Artigas that he and his army should join him. However, this was difficult to do due to heavy rainfall from 12 to 16 May. Manuel was forced to stop not far from Pando. He learned that the Spaniards intended to defeat his detachment alone, and asked Artigas to help him. Despite the roads washed out by the downpour, Artigas made a quick march, and the plan of the Spaniards was thwarted; on the evening of May 17, his troops joined with his brother’s detachment. The Spaniards in retaliation sacked the estate of Father Artigas and stole more than a thousand heads of cattle in Montevideo.

In the early morning of May 18, Artigas sent a group of partisans to reconnoiter the enemy’s camp. This group met with an enemy detachment, which was sent by the captain of the frigate, José de Posadas, at the direction of Elio. As a result of this meeting, the entire detachment, led by officer Rosales, went over to the side of the patriots. By nine o’clock in the morning, Artigas already knew about the plan of Posadas, who went in search of him. Then Artigas broke his cavalry into several columns, one of which was instructed to bypass the enemy from the rear and prevent him from escaping pursuit. To fight against a regular enemy force of about a thousand infantry and cavalry, supported by artillery, under the command of experienced officers, an army of gauchos and people’s militia, armed with the most elementary weapons, went out. They had only one advantage: they were determined to win or die.

Shortly before the start of the battle, Artigas sent a detachment of Antonio Perez to divert the attention of the Spaniards and force them to withdraw from a small hill five kilometers from the Patriot camp. Posadas fell for this bait and threw all his strength into the pursuit of Perez. Then Artigas led his soldiers to attack. The battle lasted for about six hours. It was already dusk when the commander of the Spanish troops pleaded defeated.

The coming night covered the battlefield with darkness, where the dead and wounded lay. The Patriots lost over one hundred and fifty men. Almost five hundred prisoners were captured, five guns and many weapons. But most important was the moral outcome: the Battle of Las Piedras strengthened the political and military position of the Junta of Buenos Aires and the patriots of the Eastern Province.

The fires of bivouacs burned all night in Las Piedras. The next day, Artigas with his army moved to Montevideo, lingering to rest only in Arroyo Seco and Tres Cruces, located near the city. A few hours later, the troops surrounded the walls of the city of Montevideo. The enthusiasm of the people and troops was so great that it filled the hearts of those who tried in vain to save the crumbling monarchy with anxiety and confusion.

Imagine Montevideo as it was at the beginning of the 19th century. Surrounded on all sides by a solid wall, it looked stern and gloomy. The houses, in most typical Spanish architecture, were built of stone, lime and mud, with ashlar roofs. Doors were made strong, with strong locks; small windows were protected by iron bars and awnings. The city had more than nine hundred houses and approximately ten thousand inhabitants.

The streets have changed little during the existence of the city: depending on the season, they were either dusty or dirty. They were called most often in accordance with the craft that their inhabitants were engaged in, for example, “Fishing”.

Every morning, before sunrise, a cannon shot was heard from the guard ship. The commandant of the city came out of the fort with a key in his hand and opened the gates for the townspeople who returned too late or left the city too early. Later, when the sun was already rising, the main gate was thrown wide open, and the usual movement of an industrious human anthill began. Loquacious vendors pass by, carrying trays of hot cakes; they are located on the high road at the entrance to the city; washerwomen pass by, carrying bales of linen on their heads; and here are milkmen on horseback, carrying cans of milk, bakers and greengrocers, wagons with firewood and coal … And so it goes on all day, until sunset. At eight o’clock the passage closes.

This is how the city lived quietly before the battle c. Las Piedras, when this patriarchal serenity was suddenly broken. Breathed in the air of freedom. During the day there were endless disputes, mainly among the Spaniards, to whom only obscure rumors reached; at night, fear and expectation of an attack reigned, shouts of guards and shots were heard . .. And yet, the youth danced, songs were played with a guitar, and especially couplets-desimas.[3] These decimas were composed by Artigas’s secretary and adjutant Valdenegro, who commanded one of the columns in the battle of Las Piedras, and also by Bartolome Hidalgo, one of Artigas’ friends, who called his couplets “cielitos”.[4] His songs were very popular; on the lips of all there was such a quatrain:

Patriots have a gun

Nicknamed “Black Mouth”.

This cannon for all Spaniards

Helps to get to hell.

The camp of patriots was located under the very walls of the city and was an exotic and picturesque picture. Men, women, children, ragged soldiers, officers armed in the most incredible way, Indians, gauchos, blacks. This whole crowd was in constant motion. As soon as the camp settled here, a courier came to Artigas, handing him a message, which contained an offer to exchange prisoners. After reading this message, Artigas smiled slightly: it was signed by his former boss, Brigadier Mueses, who had once threatened him with shackles.

The next day, Artigas’ reply was sent, which contained an agreement to exchange prisoners, provided, however, that only the wounded were to be exchanged and that Don Nicholas Artigas (the elder brother of the leader, known as Cucho, one of the first captives of Governor Elio).

On May 21, Artigas’ adjutant, the poet Eusebio Valdenegro, made this exchange. With him came the wounded – more than 60 people, among whom were Nicholas Artigas and Domingo Gatell, Artigas’ nephew, a desperate fifteen-year-old boy who showed furious persistence to join the army of “Uncle Pepe”.

The first week of the siege threw the city into turmoil. Elio sent an appeal to Artigas, in which he reported on the negotiations that, with the mediation of England, are being conducted in Rio de Janeiro between him and the Junta of Buenos Aires in order to end the war in La Plata. Artigas responded to Elio with an offer to capitulate. “Buenos Aires,” he wrote, “can negotiate, but my army will not agree to our delay in helping the unfortunate population locked up in the walls of Montevideo.

However, Artigas’ desire to immediately attack the city met with resistance from his superior, Rondo. Artigas sensed that the townspeople’s fervor was beginning to wane. Meanwhile, Elio, confident in the favorable outcome of his negotiations, intensified the persecution of all who sympathized with the rebels.

The first victims were patriotic Franciscan monks. They were captured at night in the monastery.

Search all the cells and bring the monks here! ordered Officer Pompillo to his assistant as he entered the convent of San Francisco.

The Gazeta de Buenos Aires wrote:

“The officer lined up the monks, counted them head by head like cattle, and opening the gates of the city, threw them out in the middle of the night, saying:

— There are gauchos nearby, your compatriots, you can go to them.”

The next day the expulsion of the patriots continued. Among them were Bartolome Hidalgo, the author of the famous “cielitos” couplets, and the famous politician Nicolás de Herrera with his families. When they were led through the city, the Spaniards (“godos,” as they were contemptuously called) brazenly spat in their faces: they were not even given the opportunity to take with them the most necessary things.

At the same time, the confiscation of the property of the patriots began. Two houses on San Luis Street that belonged to the Artigas family were confiscated. The old man Martin Jose, the father of Artigas, was forced to leave the city, along with his two sons, the daughter-in-law Rafaela, who was never cured of mental illness, and the five-year-old grandson Jose Maria. They all went to the old Artigas estate in South, which had recently been sacked by Posadas’ troops. This seems to be the last time Artigas saw his wife and son.

Elio’s policy, of course, only increased the hatred and bitterness of the patriots, who now left the city themselves to join the besiegers. As a warning, Elio set up a gallows in the city, the first victim of which was Manuel Perez. Before the execution, the brave partisan managed to throw fiery words in the faces of the judges and the assembled crowd:

– Long live the motherland! Long live the revolution!

The first week of the siege has passed. The city authorities, having recovered from the first attack of fear, were preparing for defense. Impatience grew in the patriot camp. On the roadstead of the port of Montevideo stood English ships, ready to “protect the British flag and English trade from humiliation”, and Lord Strangford, the British ambassador in Rio de Janeiro, weaved his intrigues.
