One of the most famous drinks, mostly seen, heard or mentioned in movies and songs: Piña Colada. A true tropical classic that is the ultimate drink to have by the beach or in a cruise ship. There’s something about piña coladas that just makes you feel sophisticated and relaxed. The perfect balance between rum, coconut and pineapple really is the answer as to why this drink is an all-time favorite. And the cool thing about it is you can’t just enjoy it on big and fancy occasions but also at home when you have all the things you need. Some drinks receive recognition and at some point, they lose that recognition and fade out. The same cannot be said about piña coladas though because it doesn’t seem to lose its touch.
This classic cocktail originated in Puerto Rico way back in 1954 by a bartender named Ramón “Monchito” Marrero at the Caribe Hilton Hotel. It is said that his inspiration for this drink was the essence and nature of Puerto Rico. It even gained worldwide popularity when a song was made with its name on it, “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes in 1979. The National Piña Colada Day is celebrated every July 10th. Piña coladas have many different forms that you can try as well. As good as this classic drink gets, there are other combinations of ingredients that make a good variant. As the song says, “If you like piña coladas and gettin’ caught in the rain”, try these other variations and tell us which one is your favorite.
1.Classic Piña Colada
The original recipe calls for three simple ingredients: white rum, pineapple juice and cream of coconut. It can be made in two ways: either blended or shaken. Most prefer the blended version but if you want to be convenient, you can also choose the shaken version.
Ingredients:
- 2 oz. Bacardi White Rum
- 3 oz. Coco Lopez Cream of Coconut
- 4 oz. Dole Pineapple Juice
- Dole Frozen pineapples (optional)
- 2 cups Ice Cubes
- Pineapple wedge and Luxardo cherry (for garnish)
Instructions to Make:
- In a blender, pour in all the ingredients.
- Add ice cubes. You can also swap out a couple of ice cubes with frozen pineapple chunks to enhance the flavor. Blend until smooth.
- Pour mixture into a Poco Grande glass.
- Garnish with a pineapple wedge and cherry. You can also put a tiny umbrella to add fancy effects.
2. Mango Piña Colada
A pineapple with a friend is a great combination and that friend is mango. The mango adds more fruity flavors to the drink given that mango is juicy and naturally sweet and it really goes well with the tangy taste of the pineapple.
Ingredients:
- 1.5 oz. Bacardi Gold rum
- 1 oz. Thai Kitchen Organic Coconut Milk
- 2 oz. Fresh Pineapple Juice
- 1 oz. fresh Mango Juice
- ¾ oz. Galliano
- Ice cubes
- Pineapple and mango wedge, Luxardo cherry and tiny umbrella (for garnish)
Instructions to Make:
- Grab a juicer and extract juices from the pineapple and mango separately. Measure them out using a jigger.
- In a shaker, pour in all the ingredients. Fill with ice and shake.
- Fill a hurricane glass with ice cubes. Strain and pour the mixture into the glass.
3. Chocolate Colada
Chocolate is very indulgent so it’s only understandable if it’s added to a fruit cocktail. Not only does it have a chocolatey taste that everybody loves, but it really is taking the piña colada experience to a whole new level.
Ingredients:
- 1 pc. Coconut
- ½ cup Dole pineapple juice
- Domino Sugar (to taste)
- 3 pcs. Hershey’s Dark Chocolate
- 2 oz. Bacardi White Rum
- 1 cup water
- Shaved chocolate (for garnish)
- Ice cubes
Instructions to Make:
- Grab the coconut and break it in half. Save the water.
- Scrape the coconut with a coconut scraper and gather all the meat. (The meat is just what’s required in this recipe so you can drink the coconut water if you like).
- Put the coconut meat in a blender and add water. Blend very well.
- Use a cheesecloth to strain the coconut milk. Refrigerate it.
- Add all the ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth
- Pour the mixture into a rounded glass. Shave some chocolate for garnish.
4. Banana Colada

6.
Piña Kaleada

Ingredients:
- 1.5 oz. New Amsterdam Vodka
- 4 oz. Dole pineapple juice
- 1 oz. Coco Real cream of coconut
- Luxardo cherry (for garnish)

- Garnish with a maraschino cherry.
9. Amaretto Colada
Another cousin of the piña colada and chi chi, the amaretto colada’s alcohol is obviously amaretto. Amaretto has a strong walnut flavor and it compliments the pineapple and coconut really well, making it competent among its cousins.

Piña Colada with a Twist: 7 Recipes to Try at Home
Upside-down at the Vanderbilt
The Condado Vanderbilt Hotel’s 1919 restaurant’s pastry chef Nasha Fondeur designed her own take on the traditional pineapple upside down cake inspired by the piña colada. Dare to bake it?
Ingredients:
- 7 ounces of sugar
- 8 ounces of flour
- .5 ounces of baking powder
- 4 ounces of cornmeal
- Pinch of salt
- ½ cup of eggs
- 1 cup of milk
- ½ cup of vegetable oil
- Pineapple chunks
- Caramel
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix the dry and wet ingredients (minus the caramel and pineapple pieces) separately, and then combine to form the batter. In a round cake pan, prepare a caramel base (like one would prepare for a flan) and place the pineapple chunks in a single layer. The batter is then poured on top. Bake the cake for 35 minutes or until dark golden-brown and a cake tester comes out clean. The small cake is then turned over and served hot, with a spiced pineapple caramel sauce, caramel popcorn, and a side of coconut sorbet or ice cream.
Piña Colada Crème Brulee
Pastry chef Christian Cádez’s piña colada creme brulee is an explosion of textures and flavors in every bite. The dessert’s delicacy and richness will make you fall in love on the first taste. This simple, yet memorable dish fuses French and Puerto Rican cuisine for a well-balanced, tangy treat.
Ingredients:
- 1 quart heavy cream
- 7 egg yolks
- 1 egg
- 6 ounces of coconut cream
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon pineapple emulsion
- 1 tablespoon coconut emulsion
Instructions:
In medium saucepan, combine the heavy cream, coconut cream, vanilla extract, and both emulsions over medium heat. Bring to a gentle boil, whisking constantly. Then, in a small mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks and 1/2 cup of sugar. Vigorously whisk about 2 cups of the hot cream mixture into the egg yolk mixture (do it rapidly to avoid lumps). Slowly pour this mixture into the hot cream in the saucepan, whisk for 2 minutes, and remove from the heat. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean container.
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and fill greased ceramic or aluminum ramekins with equal portions of the mixture (fill each about halfway). Place the cups in a baking dish and fill with enough water to come halfway up the sides of the cups. Bake in the lower third of the oven for about 45 minutes or until it sets. Remove from the oven and remove the ramekins from the water. Let them cool and refrigerate overnight.
To finish, sprinkle each creme brulee with a teaspoon of sugar. Using a kitchen blowtorch, scorch the sugar until it crystallizes, do one cup at a time. Serve immediately.
Pina Colada – Cocktail Recipe, History, Strength, Calories
How to make a Pina Colada cocktail
The origin of the Pina Colada is still debated. But, of course, this is one of the most common cocktails around the world. Such popularity is due to the ease of preparation and unique taste. Almost everyone loves Pina Colada. Therefore, there is always a place in cocktail cards for this drink.
Pina Colada strength: 6.5-12.5%
In the case of this cocktail, you can decide how strong it should be. If you add Malibu liqueur (its 21% ABV) instead of coconut milk to the cocktail and do not add cream, then this option will be the most alcoholic. The least alcoholic option is with coconut milk and cream – only 6.5% alcohol. Whichever one you like best, choose the one.
How and with what to drink?
The cocktail itself is quite sweet and can already serve as a dessert. However, if this is not enough for you, then you can choose light sweet fruit mousses. Due to the presence of pineapples, fatty chocolate or creamy desserts are best avoided with a smoothie.

Recipe for cooking pine Kolad
- To create one of the best cocktails, you need to pour into blender bowl rum, pineapple juice and coconut milk (or coconut liqueur)
- Shake the cocktail well and pour it into a large goblet or hurricane glass, it is from them that Pina Colada is usually enjoyed accompanied by good mood
Pina Colada Tips
- Tip 1. Adds a special flavor to the taste Use of white and dark rum in a ratio of 2:1
- Tip 2. Use only premium pineapple juice. Do not buy nectar, it is not suitable for Pina Colada. You can grind canned pineapple chunks with juice in a blender for a richer flavor. They are for decoration only. Better add Baileys liqueur and a pinch of vanilla for flavor
- Tip 4. If you use coconut cream, be careful, it will harden easily when chilled. It is better to add warm cream to the blender for whipping, and already when serving, cool it with ice
- Tip 5. By adding Blue Curacao to a cocktail, you get a Blue Hawaii cocktail.
History of the Pina Colada
Historians are still arguing about who should be awarded the title of the Pina Colada. There are three main versions, which we will talk about.
Version one
In 1954, the little-known Ramon Marerro experimented with recipes to surprise the Beachcomber bar.
