Puerta del Sol – unique historical moments

The center of Madrid is located in the Puerta del Sol, from where the calculation of distances in Spain begins.

Amidst the seething traffic, a statue of Charles II sitting on a horse rises, and from this place streets radiate in all directions, mostly pedestrian.

On one side, there is a red-and-white government building with a high metal pavilion located above the clock tower of Ramon Losada, on the other side, a fountain flaunts, and a little further, deep into the houses, you can see a she-bear with a strawberry tree – the symbol of Madrid. The wide streets are lined with chic buildings of offices, ministries, museums, as well as magnificent hotels in Madrid.

The main square in Madrid – a historical place

The history of Madrid landmarks is very unusual. Once the square was not the center, in this place there were “gates of the Sun” in the wall surrounding the city. Subsequently, next to them, on a small free plot of land, a square was formed, which became the central one.

At the beginning of the 16th century, in order to expand the exit from the city, the “Gate of the Sun” was demolished, while the size of the area increased significantly. A little later, the Buen Sueso Church was erected here, built in gratitude to God for saving the city from the plague. The monastery of San Felipe el Real arose here, and nearby is a chic building where representatives of the most ancient profession lived. However, such a neighborhood turned out to be unacceptable and, in order to remedy the situation, King Carlos I ordered the entertainment establishment to be moved to Carmen Street, located not far from the square.

In the 17th century, the spring, located near the temple, was supplemented with a composition of a bronze bowl with a fountain. Jets of water poured out of the mouths of bronze masks flowed here, and marble Venus crowned the creation.

Important events in Puerta del Sol

A little time passed, and next to the walls of the monastery and near the fountain life was already in full swing – there were tents of market traders, people walked around and the city center became the main place.

Puerta del Sol has many unique historical moments associated with it. Here, the first street gas lamp once appeared, lighting was carried out with the help of electricity, the first Madrid car passed here. It was under this square in 1919 that the city metro line was laid for the first time.

Important events took place here: the conspiracy and mutiny of the Cloaks and Hats, the uprising of the people against Napoleon in 1808. It was here that the constitution of Spain was proclaimed, after which it was burned during the reign of King Ferdinand VII.

Equally important in Madrid is the Plaza Mayor, a must-see.
