Limon Panderosa (Lemon Panderose / Ponderosa) – Citrus maniacs
Limon Panderosa / Ponderosa (Lemon Panderose / Ponderosa)
Limon Panderosa is one of the most unpretentious of citrus plants.
Reaches a height of 150-180 cm, but the height can be adjusted by pruning.
Location: diffused light, but not direct sunlight. Any room in the house, but not the kitchen. Citruses do not tolerate mixed odors at all.
Moderate watering, as it dries, do not bring to complete drying. If the tree can forgive, then the fruit cannot. When you cut it, it will immediately be noticeable that the fruit is dehydrated, it will be dry. Therefore, with watering everything is strict. But the plant does not tolerate the swamp either, this is certain death to the tree itself.
Plant care.
Citrus loves rich soil and balanced nutrition. Chernozem soil, lowland peat, deciduous humus, sand in a ratio of 2:1:1:1 or special soil for citrus fruits.
Citrus trees are fed once every 2 weeks from February to October. A complex fertilizer for citrus fruits or a fertilizer with a high content of phosphorus and additional elements of iron and magnesium included there.
The flowering season for lemons is March-May. The flowers are white in color with a sweet honey aroma, reminiscent of the smell of jasmine. Flowering is mother (future fruits) and father (empty flowers). Approximately 30 sheets can leave 1 fruit. If you leave more, then the fruits will be either very small or the plant will not have enough strength and it will die. Fruit ripening period, from flowering to yellow fruit, 8-9months. The peel is thick, somewhere around 1 cm. The Panderose variety is a lemon crossed with a grapefruit, so the smell of the peel and the bitterness of the skin came from the grapefruit, and inside is a pure lemon.
As a rule, lemons are affected by spider mites (very rarely, mainly due to dry air) or scale insects. To avoid infection, 2 times a year (spring and autumn), you need to do prophylaxis with insecticides. The strongest Nurell D in the proportion of 5 ml per 2 liters of water (1/3 ampoule per 0.5 liters of water). If the processing time was in the fall, and the fruit is on the tree, nothing terrible. After processing, use any fertilizer containing vermicompost, it removes harmful chemicals.
If there is a problem, the plant will tell you what is wrong. If the leaf turns, lack of watering or very hot. In the first case, everything is clear, water it, in the second, spray the plant with water above 10-15 degrees at room temperature. Spray once a day until the heat subsides.
Light leaves (not young) – lack of iron. Your fertilizer lacks or has too little iron. You can separately pour the plant with iron. Dilute a tablespoon of ash (tobacco dust) or a special iron-containing fertilizer in 1 liter of water.
If the time has come to bloom, but the long-awaited flowering is not there, there is not enough phosphorus. Fertilizer is needed where the percentage of phosphorus is greater than potassium and nitrogen (but you need to start sounding the alarm only from June, and again, this applies to the Panderose variety, the seedlings begin to bear fruit already in the second year. There are citrus fruits in which flowering begins only in the 5th year of life ).
On average, the weight of the first fruit will be somewhere around 300 grams, on an adult plant 600-800 grams.
Limon Panderosa reproduces very easily. With a sharp knife, cut off the stiffened stalk at an oblique angle and deepen 1 cm into the ground and cover with a bottle. Leaves can be removed immediately, they will fall off anyway. We cut the top by a couple of mm (pinch). We water like an adult plant, but remember that in a small container the earth dries out faster. Do not let the soil dry completely.
When growing any citrus, the main thing to remember is one thing. If for some reason the plant is left without deciduous mass and it is going to bloom, in no case should this be allowed. There is only one outcome, a plant without leaves will not stretch the fruit and will die.
In our shop you can also find the right soil and plant care products.

A hybrid of lemon and Ponderosa pompelmus
Home citrus growing appeared quite a long time ago. Particularly popular with flower growers is the lemon tree of the Panderose (ponderose) variety. In fact, Panderose is a hybrid of a lemon. Experts got it by crossing pompelmus, grapefruit, lemon and citron.
The plant reaches 1.5-2 meters in height. Smooth leaves create a neat dense crown. They are oval or round in shape. Differ in rigidity and the big size.
The tree is fairly branchy. Despite the fact that the branches are thick, they easily bend under the weight of the fruit. The trunk and branches are covered with sharp spines.
Flowering plant
With proper care, the tree will almost always bloom. With the advent of the rudiments of roots, buds already appear on the cuttings. White flowers exude a pleasant aroma. And the first crop is harvested in the second year after grafting. On the branches of an adult hybrid, flowers can simultaneously be in various stages of their flowering and fruits, both mature and still completely green. Such rich flowering is observed 2-3 times a year. Flowers are large. Long petals cream or white flowers. The tips are usually pink in color.

Fruit
Juicy ripe lemons increase in size even when they have reached the required maturity. On average, they grow 8-10 cm in length and weigh about 400 g. The thick-skinned fruit has tubercles. And the bright taste of the pulp has a mild sourness. There are a lot of seeds inside.
Lemon Ponderosa hybrid – how to care
Caring for a hybrid is different from caring for a classic lemon:
- Choice of container . It is better to stop your choice on a clay pot. This material passes air well enough to the roots. In specialized stores, you can easily find soil for citrus. It is a mixture of river sand, humus, various types of earth and all necessary substances.
- Location in room . Immediately after purchase, it must be transplanted into a suitable size pot and placed in a place with bright sunlight, but without burning rays. It loves the sun. However, too much light has a negative effect. A sudden change in position leads the plant to stress. It can shed not only the leaves, but also the fruits that have already appeared. With constant rearrangement, it loses its ability to bear fruit. In order for the crown to form evenly, it is important to gently turn the pot with a tree every day, trying not to shake. The ideal location is the southeast of the room. Where direct intense lighting persists for about five hours. In winter, the proper amount of light is achieved by installing a phytolamp. Illumination is required within 3-4 hours. With insufficient lighting, the leaves turn yellow and fall off, growth stops, and the existing fruits lose their rich taste.
- Watering . The top layer of soil must always be kept moist. However, abundant watering is excluded. On hot days, watering in the morning and evening is possible. In winter, the procedure is reduced to once every 6-7 days. Requires a high level of humidity. Therefore, it is advisable to add water to the pot tray.
- Top dressing . An important point, since the hybrid constantly needs trace elements. At the time of active flowering and growth, top dressing is applied every 6-7 days. In the autumn-winter period, they can be reduced to once a month. It should be a fertilizer designed specifically for citrus fruits.
- Annual transplant . The capacity is taken more than the previous one by 3-4 cm in diameter. Start with a volume of 400 ml. This must be done until the plant is in a large enough tub. Then they only change the top layer of the earth to a new one. High-quality drainage is always laid out at the bottom and a drain hole is left free. The first month after transplantation, fertilizers are not applied.
- Shaping the tree crown . Extra shoots that interfere with sufficient penetration of light are cut or pinched. They can be used as cuttings.
Fruit picking and storage

Lemons ripen within 8-10 months. After they have reached a sufficient level of maturity, the fruits do not fall off, but continue to pour. Therefore, it is necessary to track the period of development of each lemon.
A full-fledged crop from a grafted cutting is harvested in the fifth year of its development. But even before this age, it is possible to ripen 2-3 fruits per year. If citrus began to be grown from seed, then lemons can only be obtained in the eighth year of tree growth. Pleases with its Ponderosa fruits for 45 years.
Experts recommend storing harvested crops in the refrigerator.
Possible diseases and pests
The main enemy of citrus is mites. They breed in dry soil, devoid of daily watering. Spraying leaves and branches is the main prevention of the appearance of pests. If a mealybug or aphid is wound up, they must be removed from the sheet and wipe this place with a weak alcohol solution or a special antiparasitic agent.
Propagation methods for Ponderosa pompelmus variety
There are several ways:
- Cuttings . The shoot is cut from a tree that has already borne fruit. You can leave it in a container with water until it gives roots. Or immediately planted in the ground. Rooting is slow. This variety may begin to bloom before the roots gain the necessary strength. Buds at this stage must be removed. The appearance of a new leaf indicates that rooting has been successfully completed.
- After that, the young tree is carefully transplanted into a pot under the cap . Put in a place with good lighting, but without direct sunlight. The cap must be removed every day. The first time it is recommended to do this for 15 minutes, followed by a daily increase in this time.
- Inoculation . The cut cutting is inserted into the cut trunk of another tree, wrapped tightly and put on a cap.
- Seeds . Fresh seeds are immediately planted in the ground not deep. Water the soil and cover it so that it does not dry out. Leave in a well-lit area.
