When Lana was Lizzy

Lizzy Grant was born June 21, 1986 in the quiet town of Lake Placid, New York. Previously, this town was famous for the fact that it hosted the Olympic Games twice. Now he has another reason to be proud.

Lizzie spent her childhood in a trailer – the Grant family had no money to buy their own house. True, then the father of the future Lana Del Rey, Rob Grant, got rich on the registration of domain names and became a millionaire. Lana vehemently denies rumors of her father’s millions, arguing that Rob “just lives an interesting life.”

The girl went through her musical universities first in the church choir, and then in local bars, where she performed in the evenings. At 15 she was kicked out of school for bad behavior, and at 18 she left Lake Placid to conquer New York and then the whole world.

Lizzy Grant made her first attempt to conquer the musical Olympus in 2009. An album was being prepared for release, but for unknown reasons it never came out. For some time, the tracks from the album appeared in iTunes, but then they were deleted. In 2011, the world did fall at her feet. Now her name was Lana Del Rey, and there was no trace of the provincial girl from Lake Placid in her.

Caught on the Net

Sounds unusual, but video editing is one of the singer’s favorite hobbies. And, having composed the song Video Games, the girl herself created a video for it and posted it on YouTube. For a couple of months, the video has collected a million views on the Internet, and Lana woke up famous. She was called the main sensation of 2011 – despite the fact that she has not yet released a single record and has not given a single concert. Only three songs and three “hand-made” videos posted on the Internet, and the whole world was already talking about Lana Del Rey. Tickets for her first New York concert sold out in 30 seconds.

As talk of her languid voice, melodic songs, and dark style of her music videos subsided, the debate arose over who was behind Lana Del Rey’s brand. The girl herself in all interviews does not get tired of claiming that the glory that suddenly fell on her is a happy coincidence. Critics find in this set of circumstances the painstaking work of an entire army of managers, image makers and producers.

Trust no one

In an interview, she tells how, while visiting friends in Latin America, she came up with a pseudonym for herself, made up of the name of the Hollywood diva of the 50s Lana Turner and the name of the car Ford Del Rey; claims that she writes all her songs herself; that Paul McCartney’s record maker David Kane volunteered to be its producer after hearing it at a music competition in New York; that she adores David Lynch and owes the gloomy style of her songs to him.

In other interviews, the girl is confused in her testimony and admits that the managers have been inventing a pseudonym suitable for her image for five years, and she has never really watched David Lynch films.

And the main issue that disturbs the minds of both fans and spiteful critics, of course, are Lana Del Rey’s lips. Like, in early clips and in early photos they do not occupy half the screen, as they are now. In addition, if she builds up her nails, glues her eyelashes, combs her hair, then God himself ordered to pump up her lips too.

When asked about collagen, Lana snorts resentfully: “There is absolutely nothing false in my life!”, as if alluding at once to all the circumstances that raise doubts among the general public. And on the right wrist of Lana Del Rey, there is a Trust No One tattoo (“Trust no one”), and it seems that this is the answer to all questions.

Full fashion

At the beginning of 2012, Lana Del Rey released the long-awaited album Born To Die. Critics immediately hissed that the record turned out to be extremely dull, and the performer’s vocals did not reach her main rivals Adele, Rihanna and even Lady Gaga. Lana herself does not seem to give a damn about the caustic reproaches addressed to her: the album has soared to the first lines of the charts all over the world, and the army of her fans is growing every day. British Prime Minister David Cameron and actor Daniel Radcliffe confessed their love for her, and her songs are already getting remakes: they are covered by Boy George, Azelia Banks and Damon Albarn.

The fashion world is also crazy about Lana. Christopher Kane and Emilio de la Morena chose her songs as the soundtrack for their catwalk shows, while Dior Fashion House went even further and invited her to sing during their collection show in Beijing.

The famous British brand Mulberry released a bag in honor of the singer, the Japanese Vogue put Lana on the cover, H&M invited her to become the face of the brand in the upcoming autumn-winter season, and the automobile concern Jaguar offered to advertise the new F-Type two-seater sports car.

Lana Del Rey’s style combines ’50s Hollywood chic with the girl next door look. Perfect side-parted curls or Jackie Kennedy-style bouffant and high-waisted mini shorts with t-shirts and sneakers. A deliberately sexy look from under false eyelashes easily gets along with modest white blouses, buttoned up. She looks like she stepped out of pin-up posters, but she doesn’t look retro-exotic. Fashion magazines go crazy for her, and millions of fans around the world copy her style.

British men’s magazine GQ recently named Lana Del Rey Woman of the Year and devoted a good half of its September issue to her. According to the magazine, 2012 was a super-successful year for the singer: she recorded a record, signed several advertising contracts and became a person who is being discussed.
