A singularly beautiful work of art created by the azure ocean waves sits on a scenic ocean-side cliff, located on the northwest coast of Puerto Rico in the town of Isabela.  More than a mysterious keyhole opening a door to the sea, this is the location for one of the favorite local legends, but also a sad one.  Originally, this cave was called El Pozo de Jobos (Jobos Well), the depth of the pit cave is approximately 28-30 feet deep.

Walk with care as you approach the pit cave, there are jagged edges on the rocky floor.

As you stand at the south point facing north, Pozo de Jacinto looks like a natural bridge.

You’ll enjoy views of Montones Beach from this spot, you may walk there, but the sand is very heavy and gets very hot, it is our least favorite beach walk in Isabela.  During high tide in the winter months, the beach gets narrow making it more difficult and somewhat dangerous to walk to Montones.   We advise you to visit Jobos Beach instead and drive to Montones if you wish to visit.

Heading back to the trail towards Jobos parking lot, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the beach, a little further and you’ll get a closer view of surfers riding the waves.

 Pozo de Jacinto Legend

Historically there is no proof that this occurred, but the legend is well known by residents of Isabela.  Back in the early 1900s, a farmer named Jacinto lived in the Jobos area.  He used to take his cows to pasture and he kept a habit of tying his cows’ ropes to his waist.

One day his mom asked him to take out the cows though the weather was bad.  There were lightning and thundering, and a cow got frightened and fell into the well.  Sadly the cow took Jacinto with him down into the raging ocean.

Another version of the legend we’ve heard is:  There was a farmer named Jacinto.  One day as he was walking his herd of cows, his favorite one, which was always tied to his waist, walked too close to the edge, and fell into the hole dragging Jacinto with him.  Both the cow and Jacinto died in this tragic accident.  The owner of the cow, went looking for him, went to this area, and yelled “Jacinto dame la vaca!!!“.  It was then he noticed the raging sea going into the well every time he said that.

When you get to Pozo de Jacinto do the following:

• Stand looking at the well
• Yell 3 times: “¡Jacinto, traeme la vaca!!!”  (Jacinto, give me / bring me the cow).  You must say this in Spanish; Jacinto doesn’t speak English. 😉
• Then wait for the spirit of Jacinto to show his rage by the ocean waters coming in and up into the well in anger.

To find Pozo de Jacinto, there’s a trail starting from the parking lot at Jobos Beach.

We want you to enjoy this sight safely so please keep the following in mind.

• There are no lifeguards in this area.
• Never leave your children unattended.
• Do not stand right at the edge of the pit cave wall, its walls are constantly being hit by the ocean, eroding the rock, some areas may be more fragile and not safe for standing.
• The rocky ground has very sharp edges, please walk with care.
• Please do not jump into the pit cave/water. You may find videos on YouTube of teenagers jumping in,  please refrain from doing such reckless behavior. Waters are very dangerous here.  Enjoy this attraction responsibly.

  Beautiful place. The blue color of the ocean is spectacular.
  However, be very careful. It is too easy to stumble with the rocks in this area; and there is nothing to keep visitors from falling down….

  Nice place for the family with kids. IT has a natural seawater pond almost like a pool for everyone and the area is not crowded with food shacks or people because its dunes are protected. Recommend for a peaceful family day

  Beautiful place to visit. It is amazing. The Jobos beach is also here. Great music, food, friendly people. They have rent beach chairs and humbrellas. It is located in Isabela P.R. This is a must visit location if you are on vacation in P.R.

  This is a quick stop visit to an amazing rock formation. The day we visited it was windy and the waves were crashing pretty strong against the area which made for a wonderful spectacle to watch. If you’re bringing children make sure to hold on to them for dear life as there are holes around the area where they can get hurt or fall into.
