Wounds in cats – first aid and treatment, treatment of purulent wounds. Veterinary clinic “Zoostatus”

Prevention of wounds in cats

Cats are just as susceptible to minor injuries as any other animal. Many cuts, bruises, and scrapes are not life-threatening and will heal with a little treatment. Other wounds in cats may be severe enough to require sutures and intensive emergency care.

Fresh wounds usually have some or all of the following:

  • Bleeding
  • Edema
  • No hair
  • Cut, peeled or torn skin
  • Limping if the wound is in a limb
  • Hypersensitivity or pain

If the wound is not treated while fresh, infection with secondary flora may occur. In addition to swelling and tenderness, the following may be observed:

  • Discharge (pus) from a wound
  • Abscesses (i. e. accumulation of pus under the skin) and a hole in the skin from which exudate oozes
  • Symptoms of fever (eg, lethargy and hot ears)

Wounds may occur from hitting hard or sharp objects, from a collision with a car, bites from other animals.

Measures that can be taken at home mainly depend on your cat. Sometimes the only thing that can be done is to wrap the cat in a towel or place it in a carrier and take it straight to the vet.

There are, however, a few guidelines that you can follow if your cat will let you. This is especially true if you can’t get to the vet right away.

If there is bleeding, apply direct pressure to the wound. The wound should be covered with sterile gauze or a clean cloth. It may take 5 to 10 minutes for the bleeding to stop. Once this happens, secure the bandage over the wound – removing it may cause more bleeding.

Check for other wounds. If there is no bleeding and the cut or scrape seems minor, try to clean the wound.

Use antiseptic solution or plain water and gauze or cloth (not cotton!) to gently clean the area around the wound, and a syringe or similar device to apply the solution to the surface of the wound. Chlorhexidine or miramistin can be used as antiseptic solutions. Do not use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on wounds as they can damage surrounding tissue.

If the cut is long or deep, or if there is a puncture wound, you can clean the edges as described, but do not treat the wound itself. Let the vet do it. Once you have done all you can, take your cat to your veterinarian.

A thorough examination by a veterinarian and evaluation of any wounds found should be carried out. The cat’s hair will have to be shaved off to enable a qualitative examination of the injury site. Some wounds may require x-ray examination. In some cases, the examination may require sedation of the animal.

The main goals of treatment are to prevent infection from entering the wound and speed up wound healing. Different types of wounds require different treatments to achieve these goals.

For minor cuts and scrapes, it is often sufficient to clean the wound well and perhaps seal the edges with skin glue.

Long and/or deep cuts require careful cleaning and inspection to determine the extent of damage. If the wound is not older than 12 hours and not heavily contaminated, then it will be sutured.

Puncture wounds, especially from animal bites, often leave severe lesions under the skin that are not visible on external examination. After removal of any possible foreign matter, these wounds should be carefully examined and then treated with a large volume of antiseptic solution. Sometimes surgery is needed to treat deep injuries.

Puncture wounds and/or wounds that are more than 12 hours old, infected or showing signs of infection, purulent, or where a large part of the skin is missing, are usually not sutured.

Instead, they are covered with a bandage until the wound is healed, or the wound has healed sufficiently to the point where sutures will help heal rather than “lock” the infection in.

Large or deep wounds in cats, infected wounds or repeated puncture wounds often require drainage. The placement of soft rubber drains made of rubber tubes or bands allows excess, contaminated fluid (wound exudate) to drain. At the same time, until the wound cavity is completely healed, a small hole remains for treating the wound with an antiseptic solution.

Veterinarian-directed medication for infection (antibiotics) and possibly pain medication to be taken at home.

The most important thing you can provide for your cat at home is proper care. Fortunately, this usually lasts for only 1 to 2 weeks.

  • Do not let your cat lick, bite, or scratch wounds, stitches, bandages, or drains. You may need to use a special collar.
  • Dressings should be clean and dry and changed as directed by your veterinarian. At first, this may be required 2 or 3 times a day. You may want to take your cat to the vet for dressing changes, especially if the animal is aggressive. If the dressings become wet, or you notice odor, chafing, or an increase in discharge (or the discharge does not decrease), a second examination by the doctor is necessary.
  • Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment around the edges of the wound several times a day, but only if the cat cannot lick it off.
  • Make sure your cat gets all the prescribed medication. If you have problems, contact your veterinarian.

If wounds are not severe or there are no complications, a typical treatment schedule is something like this:

  • Drains are removed after 3 to 7 days
  • Stitches are removed after 10 – 14 days
  • Antibiotics are usually given for at least 7 to 10 days
  • Pain medication, if used, usually given within 5 to 7 days
  • The bandage can be left on for 24 hours to several weeks, depending on the type of wound. At the beginning, dressings should be changed at least once a day; longer intervals between dressing changes are possible later in the course of treatment

If a wound, especially a puncture wound, is not noticed, and if your cat has not been treated with antibiotics, an abscess may form, leading to the symptoms described at the beginning of this article. Abscesses take approximately 10 to 14 days to develop and are often not noticed until they have ruptured.

A cat is most likely to get injured if it walks outside unsupervised. Therefore, the best way to prevent wounds in cats is to keep the cat at home or only release it in a sheltered, confined space.

How can a cat’s wound be treated?

  1. Treatment of wounds in a cat

  3. How to treat deep wounds in a cat?
  4. Treatment of purulent wounds
  5. Care and feeding patterns for cats with wounds

Treatment of a wound in a cat

Wounds in pets are a fairly common occurrence that, perhaps, every cat owner has to deal with. Such damage occurs as a result of the pet’s sloppy behavior in everyday life, fights with their neighbor relatives or representatives of the canine family. Naturally, a lot depends on the origin of the wound: its size, the nature of the damage to the skin, depth, and the possibility of infection. It is on these factors that the choice of tactics for treating wound surfaces will depend, which will alleviate the suffering of the animal, prevent the development of purulent formations and accelerate the healing of damaged tissues.

Treatment of superficial wounds in a cat

Most often in everyday life, cats, for one reason or another, receive shallow skin wounds, which their owners can easily manage on their own at home. First of all, an animal that has been injured should be calmed by picking it up and making it feel completely safe. Only after this is it possible to further treat the wound in a cat.

So, how can you treat a cat’s wound? This question worries many pet owners, especially if they are faced with a similar problem for the first time. Treatment of superficial skin lesions in cats should begin with a thorough washing of the wound surface with disinfectants or bactericidal agents. This is necessary to prevent the development of an inflammatory process in the wound with its subsequent suppuration. For reliable disinfection, it is better to use a hydrogen peroxide solution or chlorhexidine solution, which are usually present in any home first aid kit.

When deciding how to treat a cat’s wound at home, one should remember about Levomekol ointment. This external agent has not only an excellent bactericidal effect, but also has an analgesic effect, and also helps to accelerate the regenerative processes of the skin and its rapid healing. It is important to remember that before treating wounds in pets, it is necessary to remove all hair from the skin surfaces in the area of damage, and after applying disinfectants, carefully apply a gauze bandage or bandage the wound if it is on the paw.

How to treat deep wounds in a cat?

Deep and open wounds in cats should be treated by a veterinarian. As a rule, such a laceration in a cat occurs as a result of his skirmish with dogs, therefore, it often needs to be surgically sutured in a veterinary office or clinic. Naturally, before visiting a specialist, the damaged surface should be treated with an antiseptic to avoid infection of soft tissues. After surgical suturing of the edges of the wound, the specialist without fail prescribes outpatient treatment to the animal using external agents that promote the healing of damaged skin and prevent the penetration of infectious agents into its deep layers.

Treatment of purulent wounds

Treatment of purulent wounds in cats is a complex and time-consuming process that pursues several goals at once: elimination of the focus of inflammation, preventing the spread of infection to neighboring tissues or its entry into the blood, as well as high-quality care for a pet, which will allow him to cope with the disease faster. It is better to entrust the entire process of treating an infected wound in an animal to an experienced veterinarian, who, before treating a purulent wound in a cat, will assess the extent of the spread of inflammation and make the only right decision regarding further tactics and the choice of therapy.

As a rule, in case of suppuration of wounds in cats, a specialist prescribes injectable antibiotics of general action to the animal. Additionally, the wound surface must be treated with an antiseptic solution several times a day, followed by application of ointments to the surface of the wound, drawing out pus and promoting healing of damaged skin surfaces. In some cases, when the infection cannot be stopped by conservative methods, the animal owner is offered surgical excision of the infected tissues or amputation of the pet’s limb damaged by the pathological process.

Care and feeding habits for cats with wounds

A cat that has been diagnosed with a wound should be kept calm until all injuries are completely healed. Such a pet is not recommended to be let out on the street, and it is also necessary to protect it as much as possible from contact with other animals. An important place in the process of rehabilitation of a cat with a wound is feeding. It should be balanced and aimed at fighting infection:

  • foods with an irritating effect should be removed from the cat’s diet: smoked meats, sausages, sweets;
  • it is necessary to increase the amount of vegetables, which contain vitamins and microelements necessary for stimulating the immune system;
  • , you can additionally give a sick cat synthetic vitamin complexes prescribed by a veterinarian.
