There was a hut on the shore of the lake with a palm roof. Or rather, not a hut, but only a canopy on poles. There lived a shepherd who guarded the bulls driven to rest.
When the caravan arrived at the lake, the shepherd was not there: he went to visit the herds grazing in distant meadows on the other side of the lake, a day’s journey away.
The camp was set up in a large clearing. To see the sky, one had only to raise one’s head. After many days spent in the painful monotony of the green dusk, a halt by the lake promised the same relief as awakening from a heavy nightmare.
However, not even three hours had passed before the torment began, such torment that the eyes no longer looked at the beauty of nature. In these meadows, herds of bulls constantly grazed, and therefore the earth was teeming with myriads of ticks – garrapatas. Ticks pounced on people, crawled into the folds of clothes, dug into the body, and after an hour everyone understood the futility of fighting them, stopped resisting and allowed the ticks – the rulers of these places – to bite themselves as much and how they please. Ticks were not afraid of water. On the contrary, they enjoyed bathing in the lake no less than their victim, who naively hoped to get rid of them in this way. And besides, it was almost impossible to swim here, because the shore was swampy and densely overgrown with reeds.
Drinking water was taken not from the lake, but from two springs that made their way at the foot of a rocky mountain.
In the evening, by the fire, seizing the moment when they were alone, Celso said to Andreu:
— I predicted that El Camaron would die at these rocks. But fate would have it otherwise. And one should not argue with fate, you can’t do better than fate anyway.
“Did you hear,” Andreu asked, “what the guys who buried El Camarón told about how he died?”
“If I began to listen to all sorts of nonsense, I would have forgotten how to think,” answered Celso. “And what do I care about this bastard?” Another thing is important: neither he nor El Sorro will now catch a single Indian in their nets, tear him away from his wife, ruin his life. When I think about these two scoundrels, I want to spit!
3
The whole next day the caravan’s path ran through dense jungle. But now the jungle has changed its character and looked completely different.
The road was on unsteady, marshy ground. Not a meter of solid or sandy soil, only swamp.
Celso, who was walking next to Andreu, said to him:
— Well, son, there is a smell of caobe in the air here, even if there is not a single trunk nearby. Here begins the kingdom of mahogany. This evening, for the first time, you will see a large abandoned Monteria, or rather, what is left of it. And something else that will make you think, if you have not completely forgotten how to think.
Indeed, the vegetation suddenly changed, changed so dramatically that it was noticed not only by the Indian peons who first came to these parts, but even by merchants, who usually do not show any interest in the surrounding nature. Any tree is just a tree for them, and any bush is just a bush. They don’t care if it’s chestnut or ebony, orange or oak. The trees never bought anything from anyone, so the merchants were not interested in what they looked like and what breed they belonged to.
With every step, the hooves of horses and mules sank deep into the soft ground. Animals cautiously put their feet, trying to find solid ground.
In these parts it rained all year round. If you ask any old-timer from Monteria when the rainy season begins here, he will calmly answer: “The rainy season, señor, begins around the fifteenth of June. ” Then he will inevitably be asked the following question: “And when does the rainy season end in your area?” And the old-timer with the same imperturbable look will answer: “June fourteenth, señor.”
So it was in reality. Even when it was not raining, such abundant dew fell in the jungle in the morning that the traveler was soaked to the skin from the drops flowing from the bushes and trees. By one in the afternoon it had had time to dry out a little, and at two the daily tropical downpour usually began, and it poured, as a rule, from four to eight hours in a row. Therefore, it is not surprising that after six weeks of autumn rain, the road looked like a freshly plowed potato field.
Wherever you look, there are only palm trees everywhere, fan-shaped and pinnate. These palms do not seem to have a real trunk, their leaves begin to grow from the very root. And that’s why the jungle here is so dense that one can rightfully say: “You can’t see the jungle behind the palm trees. ”
This forest was a wild, fantastic collection of prehistoric plants. Trunkless palms and tree ferns sometimes reached a height of thirty meters. The earth was not visible at all, it was covered with a carpet woven from roots, moss and creeping vines. A person who got here was shocked by the spectacle of the merciless struggle that plants waged among themselves for every centimeter of soil. People’s struggle for existence is never more desperate and ruthless than theirs. And yet everything here grew wildly and breathed an indestructible vital force that could neither be overcome nor destroyed.
This was the land that gave birth and nurtured the mahogany. And the kaoba grew here, filled with strength, reached maturity, captivating with its majestic beauty. She could become so magnificent and noble only by enduring a fierce struggle for her right to life. The tree that was born here, grew and did not die, could not but be noble. Weak, weak plants were inevitably sucked in by the swamp, rotted and became fertilizer for their stronger, more beautiful and noble counterparts.
“Look around, son,” said Celso, addressing Andreu, who was walking as if in a dream in this magical world, so new and unexpected for him. “Look around, I tell you. Here begins the great and wild mahogany country. Look at these trunks – maybe you will finally understand why it is impossible to plant mahogany in the fields of the finca. I did plant coffee in Soconusco. There is also a jungle, but not like that! You see, Andrucho, coffee trees are planted like garden trees. There is probably no difference. But try to plant such a giant! This, man, is something else entirely. Believe it or not, but now, when I inhale, damn it, this smell, it begins to seem to me that I could not get along in any other place, forgive me the holy virgin! .. I, perhaps, I would even yearn for mahogany. And here it becomes so fun in my soul that I am ready to hug and kiss this trunk. And I don’t care what you might think: “Is this guy crazy from heat and fatigue?” Everything in the world is rubbish, Andrucho, and we delve into this rubbish . .. A wife, and fifteen children, and chickens, and pigs, and trips to the market – all this, too, can finally get sick of it … I am poisoned by mahogany, I now belong to it kingdom. Watch out, friend, lest the same thing happen to you! And then, you can believe me, you will become indifferent to your … well, how is her … your Estrella, your little star …

The caravan traveled through this forest for many hours. It seemed that people fell into some completely different world, and the old, familiar one disappeared forever. And this new world in which they found themselves was a gigantic plexus of plants. Man ceased to understand where one plant ends and another begins. The world consisted of greenery, thickets and golden sunbeams running along the branches of trees and along the leaves of palm trees. It seemed that over this huge interweaving of giant leaves, branches and roots a cry was ripening, still mute, but ready to ring out every second, announcing the birth of a new, fantastic world, the ruler of which would be not a person, not an animal, but a plant. And everyone seemed to be waiting for this cry, freeing the soul from inexplicable oppression and depression. Everyone felt abandoned and alone here, forever torn away from the familiar world, although there were people like him nearby, peons and mules dragging heavy packs. But it seemed that both people and animals were reluctantly, against their will, striding towards this world of plants, as if eternal damnation awaited them there…
