The Best Restaurants in Tinos

30 September 2021

Just a short boat ride away from party-central Mykonos, it’s a mystery that more travellers haven’t discovered Tinos and its exceptional restaurants. Despite the quiet, laid-back vibe, Tinos still packs a punch in summer, with exceptional flavours of the island served at friendly restaurants with a price tag that’s considerably lower than its ritzy neighbour across the water. Here’s our pick of the best.

Marathia

Restaurant, Italian, $$$

© CARINE VAISSIERE / Alamy Stock Photo

Just 40m (131ft) from the sea, on Agios Fokas Beach, Marathia has stuck to its motto – “whatever Tinos produces is served upon our tables” – since 2002, offering a cuisine that embraces the flavours of the past while adding a modern touch. The restaurant has its own microclimate aging chamber to dry-age fish, and also makes its own cheeses. Don’t miss the home-aged tuna and bottarga, and save space for the restaurant’s kariki cheese matured in a butternut squash, served with spicy orange.

Zoga

Restaurant, Italian

With its views of the Aegean and the surrounding islands, Zoga’s hilltop location amid the olive groves and vineyards of the Aeolios Estate is almost worth a visit in itself – but the food is the real star up here. Renowned Greek chef Tasos Mantis supervises the menus and brings experience gleaned in multiple Michelin-starred kitchens. His dishes are infused with his farm-to-fork philosophy. From simple meze – such as wild pickled Tinian artichokes – to local seafood fresh from the grill, you can’t go wrong.

San to Alati

Restaurant, Italian, $$$

Seaside San to Alati is a crowd-pleaser on Agios Fokas Beach, with fresh seafood featured heavily on the menu. Crispy calamari, red mullet, taramosalata fish roe paste and grilled octopus are all favourites, but don’t limit yourself to the bounty of the sea – the fried saganaki cheese and smoky eggplant are also guaranteed to hit the spot.

To Thalassaki

Restaurant, Italian, $$$

Chef Antonia adds an extra layer of creativity to traditional Cycladic cuisine here, making for dishes that are as photogenic as they are tasty. Microgreens and flowers top salads made with farm-fresh vegetables, and every dish from meze to seafood to pasta is bursting with colour and summer flavours. Right on the water at Ormos Isternia, plan for a long, lazy lunch spread across an entire afternoon – and you can still be here as the sun starts to set over the Aegean.

Mikro Cafe

Cafe, Italian, $$$

If you like your breakfasts sweet, look no further. Set yourself up for a sugar rush with red velvet, Snickers, Bavarian cream or Oreo pancakes. If you’re brave, there’s even a savoury chicken pancake option, complete with a fried egg. Top it all off with one of Mikro Cafe’s expertly made coffees, and you should be feeling suitably fuelled for the day.

Mikro Karavi

Restaurant, Italian

Run by Tinos-born, brother-and-sister team Antonis and Stamatoula Psaltis, Mikro Karavi has been serving Tinian island flavours since 2008. Sit outdoors in the leafy courtyard with its pretty pink walls, or head for the wine cellar in the house’s former hammam. The restaurant organises regular wine and olive oil tastings, so keep an eye on their social channels for updates. Be sure to save space for dessert: the signature, complimentary home-made geranium liqueur that accompanies it is unmissable.

Triantaraki

Restaurant, Cafe, Italian, $$$

At this lovely little cafe in the hillside village of Triantaros, the colourful tables and chairs in the shade of bunting-strewn branches make you feel as if you belong right there. Friendly cats snooze on the rainbow-coloured steps, resident dog Jack greets you with a wag of his tail, and the living is truly easy – as the sign says next to the door. Açai bowls, fresh juices, smoothies, cocktails, meze and more all feature on the eclectic menu.

Dough and Shaker

Restaurant, Italian, $$$

When you’re in the mood for an Italian food fix, Dough and Shaker, in the village of Pyrgos, ticks all the boxes. The stylishly minimalist design of the restaurant lets the ingredients sing, with both pizza and pasta dough being made by hand daily. Local cheese, tomato and fruit are all in the mix – and don’t skip the creative cocktails by mixologist Mirsini Spaneli. The appropriately dough-themed Zeemie, made with vodka, tsipouro, bread, sage, passion fruit and ginger beer is as unusual as it is delicious.

Culinarily, Tinos differs little from the rest of Greece. Tasty and hearty dishes prepared according to old national recipes from natural and fresh products are waiting for you. In any tavern you will find horiatiki – a Greek salad with salty feta cheese and fragrant olive oil; fried or baked fish, which literally swam in the sea in the morning; variety of seafood and vegetables. True, meat restaurants are less common on Tinos – nevertheless, the island location makes seafood more accessible. Therefore, many taverns located on the coast offer a fish menu.

Tinos Island is located in the northern part of the Cyclades archipelago. Travelers know it as a popular beach holiday destination. In addition to magnificent beaches, the island has a large … Open

Of the national dishes on the island, we recommend trying moussaka. This traditional eggplant and minced meat casserole with a rich sauce is one of the region’s most recognizable dishes. For breakfast, you should definitely eat furtalia – a traditional Tinos omelet with potatoes and vegetables. Be sure to pay tribute to the seafood souvlaki. Small shrimp or squid skewers with delicious tomato sauce are a great option for a snack or dinner. We especially recommend shrimp wrapped in a light spiderweb dough: a crispy shell and tender meat inside – it’s very tasty.

Be sure to order an octopus stewed in tomato sauce in one of the many taverns on the island. Local housewives cook it simply masterfully. Soft, slightly springy meat combined with spicy tomato sauce will not leave you indifferent. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

Whether it is worth going to Tinos with children is an ambiguous question. Of course, the island is very peculiar and interesting in its own way. There is a beautiful, unique architecture, a unique atmosphere. No wonder the island … Open

Tinos offers guests excellent pastries, most often made from puff pastry or phyllo dough. Try spanakopita, the classic triangular pastry stuffed with spinach and cheese, or tiropita, the same pastry but with a different filling. A specific island delicacy is lichnarakia. This is a soft myzithra cheese with vanilla, orange and cinnamon, it is usually prepared for Easter.

We highly recommend Greek sweets. One of the most common is baklava, which can be found in almost every coffee shop on the island and in many shops. It is prepared from filo dough, stuffed with walnuts and honey. The dish is very sweet, but with coffee it is amazingly delicious. Or try galaktoboreko, traditional donuts made from puff pastry with custard and honey. Courabiedes are also prepared here – shortbread cookies without filling, sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon. You can either order it in a cafe or buy it in a store, this is a good gift option for friends.

Tinos differs from other Greek islands with an unusual atmosphere of spirituality. No wonder it was given the status of a sacred island during the reign of the black colonels. Indigenous people … Open

Cheese is also produced on the island. In addition to traditional feta, try myzithra. It is a soft, unsalted cheese similar to cottage cheese. Griviera cheese, which is made from three types of milk, has an unusual, slightly sweet taste. This type of cheese, produced in Tinos, is considered one of the best in Greece. From the original island meat dishes, we recommend siglin – long-term storage pork boiled in salt water. Try luzes, dry-cured sausage made from pork ribs marinated in wine.

Of the drinks, the most popular is coffee, the Greeks drink it in the morning, afternoon and evening. This drink is just perfect for local sweets. Coffee is usually served with cold water. Tea is much more difficult to find, if you find something similar, then most likely it will be an herbal drink. Juices are not so popular, but fruits and vegetables are very tasty here. You should try sun-dried tomatoes – sweet, sun-dried, they taste more like fruits.

One of the islands of the Cyclades archipelago – Tinos – a real paradise for fans of temple architecture. In a small area there are more than 800 churches, monasteries and chapels. Most of them … Open

Tinos produces excellent wine, so be sure to try the local varieties in the taverns. If possible, go on an excursion with a tasting to the vineyards. One of them is located almost in the center of the island near the city of Komi. Here you can taste wines, see how the production process takes place, and buy your favorite bottles. We recommend white wine Beloni or Bisser, Askarati, Aspropotamisio, red Mafoulis.

There are many taverns and coffee houses on the island, and you can eat delicious food almost anywhere. It is worth noting that there are no premium restaurants here, so prices in all establishments are approximately the same. Typically, this is a family business and often the owner is the chef. In Tinos, stop by O Ntinos for delicious fish and excellent homemade ice cream. The Dough and Shaker restaurant in Panormos offers an Italian menu at very affordable prices and delicious pizza.

Many people come to Tinos to receive a blessing and join the Christian shrines. However, outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of interesting things to do here. On the island … Open

In Ysternia, you can dine at Mayou All-Day Βar. In addition to delicious national dishes, there is an excellent view of the sea and an extensive wine list. You will also find a magnificent view of the beach and the sea at the Drakonisi tavern in the village of Kolimpitra. Local musicians often perform here. The traditional Tino omelet furtalia can be tasted at the Maria and Eirini tavern in the village of Agepi. Here you will be offered beer of own production and delicious national dishes.
