Lake Trasimeno, Palazzo Corna and the frescoes of Pomarancho: a guide to Castiglione del Lago

Forty-seven kilometers from Perugia, Castiglione del Lago rises above Lake Trasimeno on a limestone cliff. Although Umbria has no access to the sea, the locals proudly call this reservoir “the sea”, and from time to time the lake presents the inhabitants of the surrounding towns with various surprises, and sometimes cause for concern.

In the old days, the lake often flooded the surroundings, which, however, did not prevent people from time immemorial from settling on its shores, and not so long ago, on the contrary, the water level in Trasimeno was so low that the locals seriously feared that the reservoir didn’t dry out at all. The fact is that no rivers flow into Trasimeno, so the local water level depends solely on the amount of precipitation falling in this area. Fortunately, now everything is in order here, and you can admire Trasimeno from the heights of Castiglione del Lago, the largest town on the coast of the lake.

The modern part of the city is located on a plain, and on a hill there is a medieval historical center, which is included in the list of the most beautiful borgos in Italy. They say that the Etruscans were the first to build fortifications on this site, and then the Romans also liked this place, which is not surprising – in a strategic sense, it was extremely successful. The city was located on the road connecting Orvieto in the south, Chiusi in the west and Arezzo in the north. And, of course, from a hill, the surrounding plain was perfectly visible and it was possible to exercise control over the lake.

The Romans called this city New Chiusi (Novum Clusium), by the way, it is also curious that in those days the settlement was located not on a rock, but on a separate island, the same as the modern neighboring islands of Castiglione del Lago: Maggiore and Minore la Polvese. The Roman trace in the history of the city can be easily traced to the architectural plan of the Borgo: three parallel streets (decumanus) are irrefutable proof that the ancient Romans were here.

Pictured: Gelateria in Castiglione del Lago

In the Middle Ages, Castiglione del Lago was a bone of contention between Peruginians and Florentines, and therefore the fate of the city was unenviable – constant wars, as a result, countless destruction and subsequent restoration. In the 13th century, the Duke of Swabia, Frederick II the One-Eyed, once again ordered the restoration of the city and gave the settlement a new name – the Lion’s Castle (Castellum Leonis – Castello del Leone). It is from him that the current name of the city comes, because Castiglione (Castellioni) in folk Latin means “castle”. By the way, in the Middle Ages, the Lion’s Castle was considered one of the most impregnable not only in Umbria, but also for many miles around.

Borgo Castiglione del Lago, as befits medieval towns, is surrounded by walls. Three gates lead to the city, named after Perugia, Florence and Siena. In general, the entire layout of the city is based on the number three, they say it was the sacred plan of the architect Galeazzo Alessi, who adopted the ideas of the architect Vignola. There are three main streets, three churches, and there are also three entrances to the city.

In the 16th century, the city was transferred by Pope Julius III to the Della Corgna family, more precisely Ascanio Della Corgna, who was a relative of the Pope. It is his name that bears the most significant building of the city – the Cornea Palace or the Ducal Palace (Palazzo Della Corgna, Palazzo ducale). The Cornha Palace was once luxuriously furnished, but only 24 chairs have survived from the original furnishings of the Cornha family. However, it is still worth a visit to admire the luxurious Pomarancho frescoes that adorn the halls of the palazzo.

Pictured: Palazzo Della Corgna

Here’s the thing: Ascanio Della Cornia commissioned the design of the building to the architect Galeazzo Alessi, and most of the palace’s frescoes were done by the artist Niccolò Circignani, known by the nickname Pomarancio (Niccolò Circignani, detto il Pomarancio). The name of this artist is little known, but he is one of the significant representatives of mannerism. The nickname “Pomarancho” comes from the name of the place where he was born – Pomaranche, which is not far from Volterra. The artist worked in Umbria and Lazio, and it was the frescoes of the Corgna Palace that brought him fame.

In the photo: the frescoes of the Cornea Palace

On the shores of Lake Trasimene, surrounded by idyllic landscapes, the artist finished painting the palace in 1579, and the frescoes he created were recognized as masterpieces during the lifetime of the master. All of them decorate the halls on the first floor of the palazzo. The very first room is dedicated to the famous legend of the Judgment of Paris, where the son of the king of Troy gives the apple of discord with the inscription “Most beautiful” goddess Aphrodite in exchange for a promise to reward him with the love of any woman he chooses.

In the photo: the Judgment of Paris fresco in the Cornia Palace

The second room was painted by Ascanio della Cornia’s nephew Diomede. This is the largest hall of the palace, on the walls of which you can see illustrations of Ascanio’s military exploits – the siege of Genoa, the image of the Battle of Lepanto. Despite the fact that the artist depicted scenes of battles, the frescoes are not distinguished by cruelty, but rather resemble a solemn parade procession. The armor fits snugly to the body of the soldiers and is more reminiscent of thin fabrics, under which the muscle relief appears.

Fresco duel of Ascanio Della Corna and Giovanni Taddea

The artist did not ignore the famous battle on the shores of Lake Trasimeno. On June 21, 217 BC, four Roman legions were defeated by the Carthaginian troops led by Hannibal. Hannibal learned that the troops under the command of Gaius Flaminius were heading towards the lake, stationed his troops on the hills, and launched an attack on the enemy under the cover of fog. As a result of a cunning maneuver, Hannibal lost 1,500 soldiers in the battle, while 15,000 people died on the part of the Romans, including the consul himself – Gaius Flaminius, who built the Circus Flaminius and that same Flaminius road – during the battle, one of the Gallic horsemen along named Ducarius pierced the consul with a spear.

In the photo: fresco “Battle of Trasimeno”

Hannibal’s victory over the Roman army at Lake Trasimene is considered by the number of participants the largest ambush in military history, and evidence of this battle has been preserved in toponyms: the river and the hill are called bloody (Rio Sanguineto and Monte Sanguino), and, of course, in local legends. For example, when the lake shines in the sun, people say that it is young legionnaires smiling from its depths. and when the lake is restless, churning, the natives say that it is the legions weeping, seeing the battle in their dreams: young proud Romans who fought like lions in the most disadvantageous position and found their death in the waters of the lake. By the way, now in the area of \u200b\u200bthe town of Tuoro sul Trasimeno (Tuoro sul Trasimeno) an archaeological park dedicated to that very battle has been organized.

Pictured: Lion Castle and Lake Trasimeno

The Ducal Palace is connected to the Lion Fortress (Rocca del Leone) by a beautiful passage overlooking Lake Trasimeno. The fortress was built in 1247, according to legend, the architect Elia Coppi, who worked on the project, was inspired by the Leo constellation to create the plan of the fortress – hence the name of the fortress and its shape. And they say that the defensive structures of the town interested Leonardo da Vinci himself during his trip to Castiglione del Lago.

Pictured: Lion’s Castle (Rocca del Leone)

The neoclassical church of St. Mary Magdalene built in 1836 by the architect Giovanni Caproni is also interesting. Here is the work of a student of Perugino, Eusebio da San Giorgio “Madonna enthroned”. It is noteworthy that for a long time this work was considered the youthful work of Raffaello, but now the authorship of Eusebio da San Giorgio has already been established for certain. The second curious church of the city is the Church of St. Dominic, it was erected in 1638 at the direction of Duke Fulvio II in gratitude for the healing of his wife, Eleanor de Mendoza, who had gangrene of the hand.

Pictured: Castiglione del Lago street

After walking around Castiglione del Lago, be sure to head to one of the local restaurants, because it is in this city that you can discover Umbrian cuisine from a new perspective. Since borgo stands on the lake – lake fish is the main gastronomic specialty of this area, moreover, fish from Trasimeno is even sent to restaurants in northern Italy. In the menu of local restaurants you will definitely meet: tench (la tinca), carp (la carpa), pike (il luccio), slaty (il latterino), eel (l’anguilla), river perch (il persico reale). Of the dishes, you should try the following: Il tegamaccio – a rich freshwater fish soup, fragrant and quite spicy, La regina in porchetta (carpa) – Royal carp in fennel sauce and Lattarini fritti – small fried atherina fish, and you can accompany fish dishes with white wine Grechetto.

In the photo: lattarini fritti – small fried fish of the slat

And a few words about local cultural events. Every year in late April – early May, the Coloriamo i cieli festival is held in Castiglione del Lago, thousands of colorful kites, balloons and paragliders of the most bizarre shapes soar in the sky. In April, the Tulip Festival is held here, and at the end of August, the traditional classical music festival is held in the Lion’s Fortress.

Erich Maria Remarque – pacifist, dandy and voice of the lost generation

His cult anti-war novel All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen nichts Neues) became one of the most successful works in the history of German literature, but Remarque found true popular love not at home, but in the Soviet Union.

– “What are you reading?
– Book.
– Interesting?
– Very.
– What’s the name? “Three Comrades” … did not read.
– It’s strange, now all of Moscow is reading.

This dialogue in the subway between the heroine of Irina Muravyova and her future husband-hockey player in the film “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” is not accidental – not only all of Moscow read Remarque’s books. The entire Soviet Union sobbed over the fate of Patricia Holman from Three Comrades, worried about the young Paul Beumer from the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, and followed the love line of Ravik and actress Joan Madu from Arc de Triomphe.

It is curious that in the writer’s homeland, in Germany, Remarque is known and respected, but the attitude towards him is less enthusiastic. The Germans know him primarily as a “militant pacifist”, and of all his books, the anti-militarist novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” is always the first to be singled out. “The war has made us worthless people. We are no longer young. We are no longer going to take life from the fight. We are fugitives. We are running from ourselves. From our lives,” says the protagonist of this novel, 19-year-old soldier who went to the front from school.

This fugitive was himself. Erich Paul Remarque (later, for greater harmony, he will replace his middle name with “Maria”, and change his surname Remark to the French manner – Remarque) was born on June 22, 1898 in Osnabrück, Germany, in the family of a bookbinder. In 1916, he was drafted into the army, and in June 1917, Remarque ended up on the Eastern Front, where he was wounded, and met the end of World War I in the hospital. “The true horror of war can only be known in the infirmary,” wrote Remarque.

After the war, Remarque worked as a journalist, including sports, tried to write poetry and prose, although his debut novel “Shelter of Thunderstorms” was a failure. But in 1929, the novel All Quiet on the Western Front was published, which in a matter of weeks became a worldwide sensation and the very next year was filmed in Hollywood, and Remarque was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Today, the work has been translated into 50 languages, and over 20 million copies have been sold worldwide. Remarque repeatedly returned to the theme of war, crippled destinies and the lost generation in his works, although he liked to emphasize in numerous interviews that he was far from politics.

After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, politics entered his house: Joseph Goebbels did not like the overwhelming success of the book. The novel was removed from all public libraries, and on May 10, 1933, along with other books, they were publicly burned on the Berlin Opernplatz (today Bebelplatz). The National Socialists began to dissolve the myth that supposedly the real name of the writer Kramer, he himself is a French Jew, did not fight on the fields of the First World War.

Remarque finally emigrates to Switzerland, where a year earlier he bought a house on the shores of Lake Maggiore – a successful romance significantly improved his financial condition. At 1938 he was deprived of German citizenship. “Cosmopolitan by captivity” – the writer said to himself, noting that poetry is the best thing he could take with him from Germany.

On December 16, 1943, the National Socialists executed the writer’s sister, Elfriede Scholz, who had been arrested for speaking out against the government. “Your brother managed to elude us, but you will not leave us,” the judge told her during the arraignment. Remarque found out about the death of the younger “Friedchen” after the war and dedicated his novel “The Spark of Life” to her.

No less was said about Remarque’s personal life than about his work.
