Our menus are focused on highlighting our local farms, artisans, and producers that call the north-west coast of Puerto Rico, home. We source the ingredients used in our menus from our local farmers and artisan makers, where we believe some of the best product of the island is produced.

I made a reservation for 2:00 pm. We arrived there on time and were sent to the bar while our table was ready. We ordered some drinks..10 minutes after that, no table yet despite empty tables were completely ready at the room. We approached the waitress but she said she was too busy and could not get our table ready….the table was RIGHT THERE! We seated and after 15 minutes more, nobody came to the table to get even our drinks order or menu. Finally a waitress came to take our drinks order. We have some questions over the menu but the other waitress (not her) could answer them! I was boiling at the time! We finally ordered and all the orders were ready except for the pizza which the forgot about! Incredible!!!
Too expensive! $10 dls for a 6 oz mojito, $28 for a very small portion of salmon. ..and very bad service! I will never come back, never recommend it! Terrible!

Chef Alex Yates-Shinn combines classic European cooking techniques with Puerto Rican ingredients to create the Restaurant’s signature farm-to-table cuisine. The menu spotlights Royal Isabela’s very own vegetables, herbs and fruits, as well as the bounty from local fisherman, cheese-makers and small family farms. His philosophy is simple: real food, cooked with real heat.

It is a little difficult to get here, the GPS throws you off. The food is good, not a lot of variety and prices are not cheap at all. I know a lot of other restaurants in the area and this does not compare. I liked it because you can see that people really put in their all to succeed. Chairs and table could be better and the ambience is too hipster. I know that is in now-a-days, but you have to remember if you are going to pay $12+ for each plate, you are paying for way more than just the food. Even though, I approve it, and recommend everyone to try the food.

Isabella grape variety – Sommelier
Wine made from Isabella grape variety is something that everyone who is interested in wine will certainly encounter. Meet for several reasons. Firstly, because there is quite a lot of such wine in supermarkets. Secondly, because this wine is “bright”, that is, easily recognizable even by those who have very poor tasting skills. In fact, the characteristic “fox” taste – strawberry tones – will be caught by everyone and not confused with anything. There is thirdly: traveling to various resort countries – such as Abkhazia or Crimea – people try the so-called “homemade wine”: made by local residents for their own consumption. It will almost always be Isabella wine. And finally, fourthly: Isabella – is not only technical (for making wine), but also table variety , and we see this grape on the shelves of our stores. We see, we buy, we taste, we remember the specific taste and rejoice when we meet it again in wine.
Origin of the grape variety Isabella
So, many people start their journey into the world of wine with Isabella, and once they start, they never return to Isabella. Now let’s explain why this happens.
Botanically, several species of plants belonging to the genus Vitis (grape) of the family Vitáceae (grapes) are cultivated. Almost all widespread technical varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Saperavi, etc.) belong to the botanical species Vitis Vinifera (cultivated grapes). But there are others – for example, the American species Vitis Labrusca. To this species or to hybrids VĂtis VinĂfera and Vitis Labrusca (there are different opinions) is our Isabella. I must say that in quantitative terms, the descendants of Vitis labrusca are very common in the Western Hemisphere.
The most common grape variety
Thus, the most common grape variety in the world is Kyoho , just a hybrid of Vitis Vinifera and Vitis Labrusca – that is, practically, Isabella. It was bred in Japan in 1937 and grown in the countries of the Far East (90% in China) and in Chile. In total, about 365,000 hectares are occupied by this variety. This is a table grape – it is eaten directly or made into juice from it. There are also a number of technical varieties of such a hybrid – for example, the American Concord, very, very similar to Isabella.
In general, the question of the extent to which American Delaware, Fox grapes, Italian Fragolino, Soviet Odessa, Moldavian Lydia, New Zealand Albany Surprise are independent varieties or variants of Isabella is a matter of debate. nine0008
Popularity of Isabella
We see that Isabella is very popular. It is grown not only in its native North America and Europe, but also in India, Japan, Turkey, Bali, in huge quantities – in Brazil, in general – almost everywhere.
Why such popularity? It’s all because of the incredible vitality of the variety. It is resistant to heat and to the combination of heat with tropical humidity. But it is also frost-resistant – and Isabella’s seedlings are sold to enthusiastic gardeners already in the Leningrad region. He is indulgent to the qualifications of the vinedresser. It is resistant to pests – and, apparently, the history of its appearance in Europe is connected with this. nine0008
In North America Isabella appeared a long time ago. Presumably, the name originated in 1819, in Dorchester (South Carolina) a certain William Prince named the grape in honor of his friend Isabella Gibbs . In any case, the variety has been known since the beginning of the 19th century and reaches Europe already around 1830.
There is a version that it was Isabella’s seedlings that brought phylloxera, an insect, to Europe, whose epidemic spread in the 60s of the 19th century almost destroyed European winemaking. Be that as it may, the winemakers had a choice: either to graft their varieties on the stock from the American, familiar to phylloxera, grapes. Or cultivate American hybrids directly. So there was a serious interest in Isabella in Europe and her triumphant movement around the world began. nine0008
Why Isabella is banned
But Isabella also has enemies. These are not insects, not a disease, but people, more precisely, states. First in France, and then in other EU countries, the industrial production of wine from this grape is prohibited. Why?
Officially – due to increased content of toxic methanol in wine. More precisely, if you follow the wording – because of the difficulties in controlling the methanol content in the wine produced. That is, there is concern for people’s health, what else? All this, however, causes a number of bewilderment. Yes indeed The high content of pectin characteristic of these grapes during fermentation can give a higher content of this undesirable substance.
- But, firstly, even in this case, the doses will be less than in some conventional food products, the production and consumption of which is not limited in any way.
- Secondly, , according to experts, these excesses do not always occur, but only when winemaking technology is violated. That is, for the most part in handicraft production, which these restrictions just do not affect. nine0053
- Thirdly, , there is a suspicion that methanol is a reason here, not the reason, which is the desire to preserve vineyards for native European varieties.
Austria and Isabella
Perhaps only Austria could boast of any well-known wines from Isabella and related varieties in Western Europe: in Burgenland and the neighboring regions of Styria they made (and, probably, they make now, despite the ban) wine Uhudler – moreover, both red and white with pink! nine0008
Be that as it may, you will not find Isabella wines in the supermarkets of the EU countries now. Is it worth worrying about it? Hardly. Still, the recognizable strawberry tones of the dignity of this variety are practically exhausted.
