When we checked into the Wyndham Rio Mar Beach Resort, they gave us our room keys and room #. That’s it. No local attraction information, no brochures, not even information like a brochure on their spa.
We wanted to go to the bioluminescent bay, rainforest, Old San Juan and the Bicardi Rum Factory. I went to the concierge desk. The woman there did not have any information. She gave us some tour brochures and said maybe we could take a taxi but that may be 150.00. She said she really didn’t know. She said she would look into it and asked us to come back after dinner. We did and she siad she called a local personal taxi and he would come and speak to us. He was at the hotel quickly and had lots of local information, he spoke english too which helped. His name was Shawn Herrera from the Luquillo Taxi services. He was friendly and professional. We set up for him to take us to the rain forest the next day, he knew all of the trails and waterfall places. He stopped at all the important spots for pictures etc. (wear shoes with traction and your bathing suit under your clothes). After that he took us to the Kioskos to sample some traditional food. ( By the way, there are no resturants in the hotel that serve Puerto Rican food.) The next day he took us to Old San Juan which was also a great experience. So, overall beautiful Hotel, clean, friendly. But, if you stay here and want to go anywhere plan ahead and do not hesitate to call Luquillo Taxi and ask for Shawn!

Exotic boat trip on Ilha Grande, Rio island paradise.

The best tourist destination in Brazil is without a doubt the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is not only a place of wonders like the Statue of Christ the Redeemer and the Pan de Azulcar cable car, but also a place where visitors can enjoy the joyful atmosphere and feel full of adventure. With this in mind, going on a trip to discover new exotic places makes perfect sense. However, if you miss the road, how about a boat ride? Getting to know Ilha Grande, the parade island of Rio, may be the best discovery in this part of Brazil.

Even though Ilha Grande is very close to the mainland and the capital, the trip can take almost 3 hours. The island’s name, which means “Big Island” in Portuguese, is accurate given that it is the largest island in the state of Rio de Janeiro and the sixth largest sea island in Brazil. The total area is 193 km², the mountainous terrain is the highest point, the hill of Pedra d’Agua, with 1031 meters, a great place for extreme sports.

In one of its bays you can find the main village, the village of Abraão (or, Vila do Abraão), one of the best places to experience the local culture with about 3,000 inhabitants. There you will find most of the infrastructure of the island, such as hotels and restaurants. There is a daily ferry that takes you to the cities of Angra dos Reis and Mangaratiba.

Keep in mind that the day starts early in the Ilha Grande area, so try to get as early as possible to Abraau Beach (the same place you arrived on the ferry) to go sailing on the boat and to fully enjoy the whole day. Tours depart between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM, so the best plan is to take this tour on the day you wake up in Ilha Grande. My advice, on the first day after your arrival, is to visit the village center to contact the locals. But also try to visit the nearby beaches of Abraaosinho and Praia Comprida, more or less than 20 minutes walk from the center of the village. Another amazing place is the beautiful beach of Palmas, but for this you will have to make a slightly longer path through the forest, which can take about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The trail ends at a wooden pier which will leave you with an incredible experience overlooking the sea.

Boat trips

If you’re in the mood to explore, be prepared to spend hours or even a day on a boat visiting the paradisal beaches around Ilha Grande. By the way, there are several options for excursions that you can choose from. Options can vary between “Meia Volta” (or, halfway to the island), “Volta Ilha” (full detour of the island), “Illas de Angra” (Angra Islands) and “Super Sul” (only the beaches in the south of the island). Each of them has its own itinerary, so consider the time you have and your budget. In any case, you can plan your trip in advance at a local agency or directly on the beach with the boat owners.

Exotic Beaches

Depending on the trip you choose, you can pass through Lopez Mendez Beach, one of the finest and most beautiful beaches in Brazil. He was even at the top of the list in this category in trade magazines. In total, this place has a length of 3 km, without any structures, representing a wild beach of fine white sand and mixed shades of blue and green water with incredible transparency.

Casadazo’s small beach is also a nice place to stay. The strip of sand here is narrow, but there is a shortcut to climb the rocks next to the beach. The water is super green and crystal clear, great for snorkeling. Nearby, by boat, you can sail to the next beach “Dois Rios”. Fun fact is that in the past access to the beach was denied because there was a prison that was blown up at 1994 year. Dois Rios is currently accessible via the trail from Abraau, although this is only recommended if you are more athletic.

Apart from all the other places, Aventureiro Beach is indeed the most famous and the highest point of this trip. This is the perfect place for extreme sports like surfing, but also a great place to relax and enjoy the day. One of its most famous attractions is the coconut tree leaning over the beach. In addition, Aventureiro has a larger structure than others, with restaurants and camping sites. Also, don’t forget to visit the “Pedra do Sundara” viewpoint, which offers an amazing view of the entire beach from above. The climb is not that tiring and is recommended for all ages.

Keep in mind

I would recommend bringing at least two swimsuits and light and comfortable clothing. Also, pack your trail walking shoes and flip flops. In your backpack, don’t forget to add water, fruit, insect repellent and sunscreen (very important). Even though some boats offer shelter from the sun, you can burn your skin badly, even while sailing. It is also very important to carry cash with you, as some places do not accept credit cards or bank transfers. My advice is to plan the maximum in advance and only bring the amount you plan to use.

Finally, I hope you find my tips helpful and I’m sure you’ll enjoy this amazing and exotic boat trip on Ilha Grande, Rio’s island paradise, as much as I did.

I was born in a big city in Brazil called Recife, but I realized that it wasn’t big enough for me. I lived in Brazil, then abroad, now in Europe, but whenever possible, I gladly return to Brazil, my wonderful country. I want to tell you about Brazil in my articles and photos.

States of Paraiba, Rio Grande do Norte and Ceara attractions, what to see – YouRoute

The combination of lively cities, huge dunes and pristine beaches is the main attractions of the three states.

João Pessoa and Natal, the capital of the Rio Grande do Norte, are historical towns with good beaches. However, this part of Northeast Brazil is best explored along the coast, on beautiful secluded beaches and in quiet fishing villages.

Paraiba, Ceara and Rio Grande do Norte in 1532 were almost the first states in the Northeast to be colonized by the Portuguese. But due to the lack of sugarcane plantations, they were never rich and equipped, unlike their southern neighbors. In recent years, taking advantage of beautiful beaches and constant sunshine, these states have made tourism the backbone of the economy.

Ceará, famous for its beaches with warm azure waters set against red sandstone cliffs, the most popular are the lively towns of Canoa Quebrada and Morro Branco, northeast of Fortaleza, and the secluded beach of Jericoacoara to the northwest.

West of Ceara presents the Ubajara National Park with ecological trails, caves and magnificent waterfalls. In the northeast corner of Brazil lies Rio Grande do Norte, whose real industry is tourism.

The most important destination for tourists from Western Europe is Natal, which has the most unspoiled beaches in Brazil.

Most visitors to the states of Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará and Paraiba look forward to seeing the natural beauties of the coast and beaches. The most popular destinations are Fortaleza in Ceara and Natal in Rio Grande, from where most of the state’s attractions can be easily reached.

The capital of Paraiba, the city of João Pessoa, is interesting with its colonial buildings, beaches and parks.

In Cariri, located in the depths of Paraiba, you can discover a completely different world, filled with gigantic stone formations.

Dinosaur fossils discovered in Sosa have made this place a center of archeology.

June Celebrations

The most popular folk tradition in the Northeast, the June Celebrations began when peasants celebrated the corn harvest and the June equinox, the longest night in the Southern Hemisphere. June coincides with the feasts of St. John, St. Peter and St. Anthony. Pagan and Catholic rituals have intermingled over the years. It can be quite funny when the celebrants, dressed in peasant clothes, dance to the sound of forro.

Fireworks are set off and bonfires are lit to protect the harvest from evil spirits.

Sertan

Sertan is an arid and impoverished area covering almost half of the northeast. Rains are extremely rare here, the vegetation consists of caatinga – small shrubs and trees.
