Went on a college night. Cheap beer. Good music. Looked like a nice crowd, at first. But when I ordered a beer in English (didn’t even speak, just said the name of the American beer the way it’s spelled), I got mean-mugged by the bartender and laughed at by anyone in a three person radius. Perhaps they don’t like outsiders in their town. Perhaps they’re just self righteous college kids. I’m not sure.
Area was pretty sketchy too. I’d stick to Old San Juan for my nightlife.

Rio Piedras Used to be its own City before it belong to San Juan
well I must say this place is amazing sweet awesome The Music, the people, the party, specialy if Pirulo comes aroind and sing “si lo se yo soy asi un pocoloco pero feliz” the Drinks the bar the pool table wow everything about this place is awesome I really had fun whit my wife I would definitely come back soon

El boricua ita a great bar with open space, poll, and a dancing area.
Its a really humble place with cheap prices but a lot of culture. Its one of the favorites places to go to the local scene of the metropolitan area. They have live music every Tuesday and it gets really busy on Thursdays. El boricua its located near the main campus of the university of puerto rico and students apartments. This place its definitely a mist if you want to experience some puerto rican culture.

This place is a classic among relax,casual locals,it has live music some nights or a “vellonera” , the bar is simple but the prices are worth it. They have kebabs and soups on the back. Check out their Facebook page.

The photos in this post are conflated. They show both the Plaza del Mercado in Río Piedras and the Plaza del Mercado in Santurce; two different locations. If you want the produce, go to the one in Río Piedras. If you want the music and night life, go to the one in Santurce. I lived and was reared in Puerto Rico. I am now 66 years old, and this morning I was reminiscing about how I witnessed the Plaza del Mercado change over the years. When I was a little girl, it was a true farmer’s market, because there was a lot of agriculture on the island. This diminished over the years, as the island transitioned to manufacturing. What I most remember of the Plaza del Mercado are the unique smell of the fruits and vegetables.

This is a market with very few of the stalls open. Mostly fruit and vegetables , that were not very fresh looking. I Ubered over from my place and it was not worth the fare to ride over. I would not recommend this place at all.

Small market with fresh produce

This small market in the Río Piedras neighborhood of San Juan has several vendors selling fresh produce, and a food court selling various tasty meals.
The street leading up to this market has a lot of stores selling clothing, phones, and trinkets. There’s music in the evenings, which is fun and adds to the festive vibe. This market is close to the University of Puerto Rico and isn’t really aimed at tourists – if you want a larger shopping area, go to the Plaza las Américas.

I liked this market but was surprised how small it was. Just a few fruit vendors and a couple of other shops inside. I loved the avocado statues out front and the bars on each outside corner. Cool place. Lots of bars and restaurants around it.

Real bargains and authentic market

First time to Puerto Rico.
Great bargains on clothing, Bought men’s shorts, with belt 10 each, shirts were 2 to 4$. The market was real. Locals shop here. Fresh produce, meat market and a food court. I would recommend to go, just 10 – 15 min from old SJ .

Traditional Mercado like most Latin American cities have. Includes a food court offering very affordable “businessman’s lunches.” Not aimed at tourists at all so it helps if you have some Spanish. The retail area offers fresh meat, fresh produce, OTC meds, and lottery tickets. There are some mainland-type shops around the edges and lots of street vendors on Avenida José de Diego, which runs along the south side of the building. If you want a real taste of local life in San Juan, this should satisfy.
