The staff were more than helpful, from the second we walked in Lewis immediately greeted us with drinks (free open bar) and gave us great tips on how to start our vacation. Also the communication between staff was top notch! I will most definitely be staying here again when I visit back.

San Juan1.42km from San Felipe del Morro Fortress

This is the first time to check in again 2 days after check-in. The hotel is in the old town. It is a historical building. The first and second floors are very beautiful, and it is very old Spanish. Right next to the large cruise ship 🚢 pier, different cruise ships can come and go every day. Cruises can be enjoyed from the restaurant balcony on the second floor and the swimming pool on the top floor. The room is not small, the service is good, free apple clams every day, the buffet breakfast is not rich in China, but it is no problem to eat full, and the taste is more suitable for Americans. The best choice for visiting the old town.

San Juan1.24km from San Felipe del Morro Fortress

We loved our 1 night stay here. Our room was quite large and perfect for our family of 4. The location was central allowing us to easily walk around the area. The decor through out was fun, colorful and had some intresting details. There is lots of roof top seating and great views of the surrounding area. The staff here is great and our check in was a breeze. When we were a little lost trying to find our room a gentleman came to our rescue and escorted us to our room even helping us with our luggage! Unfortunately for me I woke up the next morning with an issue with my eye. I needed to get medical help immediately. The woman at the front desk was a huge help locating the right doctor for me to go to and spoke directly with the office to explain my situation. Sadly I did not get her name but she saved the day!

San Juan1.23km from San Felipe del Morro Fortress

We stayed at the Fortaleza for two nights during our family holiday. There were 3 bedrooms with plenty of space for all six of us to have some privacy. The kitchen was huge and we prepared 2 delicious family dinners there. There are balconies overlooking the old San Juan streets. There are many sites, shops, restaurants within walking distance so the location in Old San Juan is perfect for those that want to stay close to the accommodation. We arrived early in the morning and we were able to store our luggage for the day while we walked around town. The downside is the parking is not onsite, but it is in a garage within walking distance.

Condado5.73km from San Felipe del Morro Fortress

The experience is average: the room is too small, the corridor is very narrow, there seems to be a fire hazard, but fortunately, it is close to the sea, and there are many food shopping and food shops around, which is more convenient for tourists.

San Juan4.09km from San Felipe del Morro Fortress

The Hotel is beautiful and for the price of a basic room, we had a view of the beautiful lagoon, with a balcony and privacy. The only thing they should consider is parking because we had to pay $20 a day :-(. Paseo Caribe offers a quiet and safe area, has security guards, and you can walk quietly around the area. You have nearby restaurants, steps from the Caribe Hilton Hotel, and steps to the Escambron area where the beach is beautiful and the day and night walk is beautiful. If you are looking to stay in this area without paying so much, this is a good option. The price they put is not that, the rate is lower. I paid $ 116 per night and my room was the Executive Room. They comply with health regulations, have staff checking the temperature, and the use of a mask. It offers many areas to walk, enjoy as a family or as a couple, and despite the Covid-19 they offer different ways to be able to walk and enjoy a beautiful tourist area [Fortín de San Jerónimo del Boquerón] Spacious room and the bathroom was huge as well!

San Juan0. 84km from San Felipe del Morro Fortress

Loved our stay and definitely have to come back with just the husband to enjoy the rooftop bar and free bottle of wine. Place is beautiful but remember it’s an old building so walls have some cracks and are a bit thin but the room and facility were beautiful and clean.

About the attack on the governor’s palace and the American palm trees of Fort Del Morro

The historic center of Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. I didn’t manage to get around it all, and I didn’t set myself such a goal, but I really liked what I saw. Bright, clean, decent, civilized.

Tropical colors in the face of amazing trees and huge lizards – more than enough. I will show you more lizards, I saw a lot of them on the coast, and trees – here you are.

And the town is a picture! See what details! Although, what a town, by Caribbean-island standards, the city is rather big – almost 400 thousand inhabitants.

But back to UNESCO. In addition to the center as a whole, individual buildings are also included in the list, for example, La Fortaleza, that is, a fortress. Here is the residence of the governor of Puerto Rico – the oldest active residence of the entire New World. It was built between 1533 and 1540 to protect the island from European attack. This is the first military structure of the capital, which, together with Fort Del Morro and Fort San Cristobal, forms the defensive line of coastal structures. I would never say in my life that this graceful house is a fortress.

The residence was rebuilt several times, conquered a couple of times – in 1598 – by the British and in 1625 – by the Dutch. Two more attacks occurred relatively recently. In 1950, four local nationalists tried to break through this wrought-iron gate, three of them were immediately shot dead, and in 2004, a man armed with a knife took a woman passing by hostage and took refuge with her in the guard house on the left . All he needed was to read personally to the governor a letter with some demands, which happened two and a half hours later. The governor left the palace and listened to the violator of the order. What happened to him next, I don’t know.
This is the second defensive landmark – Fort Del Morro, viewed from the coast.

I will tell you more about the fort below, but for now, admire the iguana crawling along the wall of Fort Del Morro.

In general, all the ancient buildings in Puerto Rico are dated no earlier than the 16th century. As the Spaniards came here, they immediately began to build up the island. It was not so important where to live, how to protect a place to live, so the oldest structures are all completely protective. The entire fort is called Castillo San Felipe del Morro, in honor of King Philip II of Spain.

11

The fort was designed to protect not only the city, but the entire San Juan Bay from numerous overseas enemies. There were many enemies, because everyone who was heading to conquer the New World first stumbled upon Puerto Rico, he was the first on the way from Europe to America.

The construction of the citadel lasted 50 years, the next 400 years, changes were made in the spirit of modern defensive art. For example, initially the walls were 1.8 meters wide, and now they are as much as 4.4! In order not to mention meters anymore, I will also say that the height of the defensive walls at the highest point is 55 meters.

Towers-houses are visible along and at the corners of the walls; they served to monitor the enemy from the sea. The turrets are called garitos and are so beautiful that they have even been made a cultural symbol of Puerto Rico.

14

Such towers were built in Europe in the 12th century, they can be round or polygonal in shape.

Throughout its existence, the fortress has experienced many attacks. There were several of the most significant. In 1595, Sir Francis Drake’s fleet tried to attack her, but the attack failed after the Spanish defender hit the captain’s ship with a cannon. Three years later, the British again attacked the island, this time more successfully, because they took into account the mistakes of the past and did not climb from the sea. They landed on the other side of the land and calmly almost occupied the island. And only an epidemic of disinteria forced the British to sail back to their foggy Albion.
This monument was erected in memory of the battle with other invaders – the Dutch. This happened in 1625, when the Dutch almost captured the island. The Spaniards left the capital, then recaptured it again, and the Dutch set fire to San Juan in farewell and burned it almost to the ground.

The most successful was the American invasion in 1898. They attacked the fortress three times, bombing out a very beautiful lighthouse, instead of it they built a modern and completely uninteresting one, and have remained in Puerto Rico to this day.

17

For a long time the territory of the fortress and many government buildings served as a military base for the Americans, they removed it only in 1961. But palm trees have never grown here, they were planted by the Americans in 1992 in memory of the journey of Christopher Columbus to America.

18

And on the shore, I think the palm tree itself has grown.

The Citadel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is visited by more than two million people every year. But we, unfortunately, do not belong to them, we were not counted. We entered the fortress from the wrong side, where tickets are bought, but just like that, for free, we walked here.
You can repeat our dishonest but unintentional act if you go to the ocean shore through the San Juan Gates – the central of the five city ones, through which all the Spanish and guest nobility passed. Soldiers and horses with carts passed through the other four.

20

A lot of cats live on the territory of the citadel. Why is a separate and big topic, but now I will try not to pay attention to cats and focus on what we saw on the way to the fortress.

And we saw the sea and many ships in the distance. In another distance, not in this photo.

22

I noticed that the walls of the fortress below are smooth, filled with cement. These are forced and very expensive methods of protection. Numerous trees and shrubs are destroying the ancient walls, so you have to destroy them in this way.

23

In the days when the American base was here, golf was played on many lawns in the territory of the fortress. What do you think, Americans without golf? In general, the lawns are still green and fresh, they are watered regularly.

24

A convenient wide road ended after a kilometer, then we went up the stairs.

25

In some places we were surrounded by almost jungle.

26

However, there were benches for weary travelers.

27

But we did not sit on them, once you sit down, you realize that you are tired.

From time to time the path led us to the viewing platforms.

29

This is Sasha, my son, he is standing thoughtfully, and to his left is a ship that was not visible in photo number 22.

30

purpose. Maybe during the Second World War, the Americans used it for some reason, and the fortress itself served as a base for monitoring German submarines.

Approaching the bridge, we saw a beautiful chapel ahead.

32

We came even closer, looked behind the stone fence and found a cemetery. It was very old, already at home I read that this colonial cemetery has existed since 1863 and bears the name of St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, a native of Florence, by the way.

33

I didn’t jump down, it was too high, I won’t climb back.

34

The walls of the fortress are double, it was possible to pass through the gate in the wall. I wonder if the enemies knew about this?

This is the main entrance for all normal tourists, somewhere inside there is a ticket office.
